Bio
Gemma Russell is an upcoming New Zealand talent with a soulful voice and stage presence to match. The classically trained singer and instrumentalist is out honing her craft around Auckland with a view to release her first single On a high recorded recently with UK producer Greg Haver and well-known NZ sound engineer Clint Murphy.
Gemma has already sparked interested from the top brass in the NZ recording industry and it looks like 2009 is shaping up to be a remarkable year from this young singer-songwriter Gemmas unique blend of instruments include vocals, piano, guitar, strings and flute. Her songs fluently express her thoughts and emotions through scintillating vocal melody and dramatic piano, strings and guitar accompaniment. Her heartfelt songs have the unique ability to mix and blend musical styles intertwining genres such as Adult-contemporary, Pop, Classical and Celtic.
Born and raised in the deep south of New Zealand, Gemma was regarded as an 'all-rounder' kind of kid. She excelled at sport and played lead roles in school productions. At University Gemma completed a music degree specialising in classical and performance music at Otago University and went on to finish her study with a Graduate Diploma in Primary Education.
While also finding time to enjoy the prodigal student life, Gemma played for the National Champion Southern Sting netball team. Injury meant she turned her full attention to another passion Music.
Two years out of teachers college, Gemma decided to give up being a full-time primary teacher in order concentrate on her music in May 2008. She is now a fulltime singer/songwriter in Auckland, and a regular act at a number of Auckland venues. Gemma has a genuine knack for entertaining an audience, not just with her music, but with an entrancing charisma that so obviously honest and real and one that is extremely hard to find in this industry.
Its a cliché - but with this promising musician - no words could be truer than watch this space.
