GEMANON “Earthrift” – Independiente – EP 2012

Puedo apostar mis bolas a que esta banda la veremos dentro de no mucho tiempo bajo el alero de algún sello de relevancia o al menos en boca de muchos, porque lo que se escucha en este primer EP la verdad que dista mucho de querer quedarse en el anonimato por mucho tiempo más. Y es que Gemanon surgen con la intención clara de hacer algo diferente y refrescante dentro del mundo del metal más moderno, sin querer sonar cliché ni nada similar, pero lo que hacen estos californianos provenientes de la mismísima Bay Area ( eso sí con muchos años de diferencia en relación a quienes ayudaron a forjar lo que hoy todos conocemos como thrash metal, y con un estilo que en nada se les asemeja) estos cuatro músicos dejan más que claro que cuando se trata de lograr un resultado sólido y original, puede costar innegablemente, pero se puede lograr (y vaya en que forma lo han hecho en estos tres cortes).

Con influencias tan disímiles que van de bandas más melódicas y progresivas a lo Dream Theater y Symphony X, hasta llegar a otras más actuales y agresivas – a lo Lamb of God o Disturbed – estos estadounidenses deben ser considerados como una futura amenaza para cualquiera de aquellos que han sido proclamados a los cuatro vientos como los futuros reyes del metal. Claro que todo dependerá como logren desarrollar esta línea iniciada en este precedente. Musicalmente la técnica y virtuosismo que demuestran en construcciones como “Meridian” es tan delirante que te hace perder el conocimiento del puro asombro, más aún cuando el trabajo vocal es tan magnífico de parte de este James Fraser que en su aspecto más melódico me recuerda muchísimo al joven James LaBrie (Dream Theater) no obstante en las secciones más brutales es algo más normalito, si se lo quiere llamar de este modo pues no dista mucho de lo que se oye en otras bandas al estilo de In Flames o Lamb Of God. En ese sentido si bien tienen también algo del sonido Gothemburgo en su manía por trabajar las rítmicas con un sentido de la melodía más elaborado, su estilo es completamente distintivo gracias también a la aportación de teclados que no dejan de estar presentes a lo largo de toda esta mini placa.

Desde luego que mi fascinación ha sido total tras la audición de un corte como “Meridian”, con toda su idea progresiva metalcoreta pero hecha con elegancia, aunque el inicial “Sentience” de todos modos es un gran primer puñetazo que deja en evidencia el lado más duro y potente de la banda, mucho más orientado hacia esa vertiente melodeath metalcoreta pero en donde ya las habilidades como guitarrista y vocalista de James sorprenden a moros y cristianos. Y por supuesto, no hay segunda sin tercera, pues el final “Earthrift” es también un tema exquisito en su desarrollo, un instrumental de melodías espaciales y llenas de matices de alta complejidad, solos de gran calidad técnica y unos teclados simplemente dramáticos y épicos en el acompañamiento, por lo que tras el término de estos trece minutos de músico ya me he empezado a impacientar por la espera de un futuro LP de estos chicos, todos ellos jóvenes músicos que no me cabe la menor duda que tendrán su merecido reconocimiento y fichaje respectivo. Y es que no están para ser despilfarrados dentro del universo actual de bandas metaleras cuyo crecimiento parece no querer detenerse. Funny how things happen on the internet. So if you’ve been checking out our posts you may have run across a humorous video I put up last week entitled ‘Shit metalheads say‘. As it turns out near the end they reference another band I’m somewhat familiar with in Nekrogoblikon so I posted it on their wall. According to the Nekro dudes the guys in the video are from a band called Gemanon and came highly recommended by Nekrogoblikon. So fast forward to the other day and I received an appreciative e-mail from Jesus Sahagan of Gemanon and a request to check out their music. Apparently that video is getting a ton of page views so that’s cool. It also turns out that Gemanon is based in the South Bay so not too far from me and I must be getting old because I didn’t even recognize the transit system in the video until I went back and viewed it. So with that all in mind I of course checked out what Gemanon has to offer.

If it wasn’t already apparent this band is young and only have been at this band thing for a few months. I wouldn’t have known that upon the first listen of their E.P. Earthrift if I hadn’t done a bit of research beforehand. Gemanon labels themselves as Bay Area Melodic Metal and that is pretty accurate. In an era where guys of this age are getting into the “core” scene” or djent these guys have decided to take a more melodic approach to their music. Earthrift has three tracks on it and each is diverse and chock full of riffs that pay homage to the Gothenburg melodic metal scene. I can pick out traces of In flames and older Scar Symmetry in tracks such as Meridian which is probably my favorite of the three. Bottom line is Gemanon and their E.P., Earthrift, is already better then material that older and more established bands have been churning out for years. There is a level of progression on these songs that is really quite good in their depth. This is due in large part to guitarist Ryan Alvarado’s impressive skills in riffs and soloing. Paul Anderson is on drums and between him and Jesus on bass the rhythm section is as technical and tight as bands that have been going at this for a decade or more.

Gemanon has my full support in their future endeavors and deserve to be heard because they have something excellent here. Here are the pertinent links for you to check them out and give them your support as well after listening to these songs. - That Devil Music

Gemanon has been gaining some serious promotion lately and for good reason. It’s hard to believe that these guys have only been around for less than a year, that they are not already signed and only have just over 500 fans. They only have 2 songs up right now on their Facebook page but they are some of the greatest metal songs out there right now and it really shows how talented these musicians are. Gemanon takes every element of metal and molds it to create their own music footprint. Both songs bring you soft vocals and then an overlay of screams and it fits perfectly together along with the double guitars doing what they do best. You can’t forget the bass and drums gluing the background together to hold this music together. You take any one of these musicians out of the equation, the band wouldn’t work right. All I can say is this is the band you need to keep your eyes and ears on as they rise in the underground metal scene. They can be heard on 101.9 Fox FM and also will be featured on “Straight From The Underground Vol. 9? which will release in the near future.
