Geno K

Geno K is a guitarist, bass and keyboard player and he presents a self financed work. The sound is closer to Radiohead and Nirvana ( especially the vocals) with a good production for an independent release. The similarities with Curt Kobain are many but Geno's music sure has a place in Alternative rock stations, it has feeling and strength. One can hardly believe when hearing this plate that it concerns with Geno K a One one Project. Guitar, bass and Synths are played completely by Geno K aka Eugene Kim, a musician that some years in the New Yorker music scene active are already. Its new album The human Geno Project offers solid, modern Rocksongs somewhere between U2, to the Foo Fighters, Beck and the Hives. I listened to the whole disk - I enjoyed listening to the male and female vocal trade-offs. The production qualities of the record are good- at times very ethereal, other times rocking hard in your face. I hear Nirvana influence - in the male vocal delivery, in the strong melody delivered in a raw way. "Pass on Me" really stood out because I found it instantly accessible, hooked me right in, had those "radio friendly" qualities, and just overall is a well crafted pop song. "Exhale" and "Reborn" also stood out as other strong tracks - Crumbs Radio (crumbs.net)

It would be tricky if his CD kind of blowed, but it doesn't. Quite the opposite. We got an advance copy a month ago and it still remains in our 6 CD changer to this day. It might take a bit, but the tripped out hard rocking Leonard Cohen stylings of "The Human Geno Project" will win the day in the end. The melodies of The Geno K Experience are coming to your home as part of their national tour, stopping at eaTV for a live performance on Wednesday, April 20 at 8P eastern.

Geno K, aka, Eugene Kim, merges his soulful singing with Alycia Ercums melodic vocals throughout the album, forming a smooth blend. Although the band is named after Geno, the other members also make their names known.

Geno has developed skills on the guitar, but is known for his abilities on bass in his previous band, Shaker, Stalone & the Sleavze. Geno has been in the New York music scene for five years, and for the last two, has been working on his solo project with a few friends.

A classic pianist, singing and playing venues since 15 years old, Alycia is a strong presence on stage. She has also earned numerous awards for her songwriting.

Providing the essential beats and percussion, is Max Figarski. As a part-time teacher, Max never fails to show his expertise on the drums. Together, the band emits an alternative sound with an underlying influence of Nirvana.

Their recently released CD, The Human Geno Project, ranges from the sentimental to alternative rock. Coming out of the New York music scene is The Geno K Experience, looking to break the barriers of mainstream music.

GENO K: The Human Geno Project of ks (Blue Light record) Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Nirvana adopted a child, and Tom WAITS babysittet. So similarly the press briefcase describes Geno K and does to it thereby no favour. Elements of these groups are present, but the music of Geno K is nevertheless somewhat completely own. Behind Geno K the New Yorker guitarist bassist, Keyboarder and programmer Eugene Kim, which brought a project together with musician friends into being, hides itself what the music world to change wants (and according to my opinion also must): Wonderful melodies, suffering voices (, it is correct, to Geno K. sounds like Kurt Cobain), melancholische texts. That is written so simply... melancholische texts (each Boyband "I at down the on is nowadays somehow melancholisch and written my knees, begging you, please..."). But the Lyrics of Geno K is it really - poetically and nevertheless clearly, without Schnoerkel and nevertheless touching. The whole album succeeded throughout, the change of male and female singers brings an additive, which lets the album appear closed in itself variedly and nevertheless. The Human Geno Project
Sometime between MTV's conception and decision to play no more than thirty seconds of any given song, the nation recognized New York as a homestead for musical diversity. Mainstream acts are balanced by uncommon musical fare like The Walkmen, Coheed & Cambria, Northern State, and now Eugene Kim's solo [despite appearances from a wealth of Kim's friends] project Geno K.

The Human Geno Project draws its concept, not surprisingly, from the human experience. Geno K's website claims the project "is a multi-disciplinary approach to achieving an understanding of the human makeup, wrapped in 2-4 minute pop packages." A bevy of guests are featured on the album, as four other vocalists, an emcee, another guitarist, and a keyboardist join Kim's voice and guitar. Of the ten tracks, Kim performs solo on only three: "The Taste," "Oblivious," and "Heart Shaped Letter." The rotating cast contributes to the feeling that the album reinvents itself every three or so minutes. Geno K manages to make such reinvention seem both natural and enjoyable, such that the album's schizophrenic nature manages to be a benefit to listeners, not a detriment.

Unfortunately, Kim's voice is not his greatest strength. He can certainly carry a tune, but he voice has a dry character that distracts from the rest of the compositional elements of the Human Geno Project. The production is outstanding whether or not one takes into account that the album is an independent release. Steve Candelin's drumming is enjoyably spartan, refusing to overtake the lyrics of any song. And the lyrics resonate with listeners from all walks of life, as Kim spills his blues, channels the entire grunge movement, and even pulls off an admirable pop star. In "Heart Shaped Letter" Kim presents a stark but appealing vision of hope, singing "it's time to rise from the dead and clear the open path to what's ahead." Throughout the album listeners identify with Kim's statements that life doesn't mean much without some hardship. "Give blood, take love" Kim whispers at one point, summing up one of many of the themes tackled in his lyrics in a brief but loaded phrase.

The star of the album is really Geno K's guitar work. Though John Adair takes over leader guitar duties on a trio of songs [and even steals the show for a moment or two], Kim keeps the disk chug chug chugging along. The bulk of the rhythm on the album is tackled via Kim's diligent plucking, such that at times he masks Candelin's snare. At the same time, the odd shake of a tambourine or a couple of bars on the harmonica stand out as unusual delights. On "Last Call" the harmonica blends almost seamlessly into both Kim's voice and the guitar driven beat, unifying and strengthening the two. But that's just one example of the genius of Kim's composition. In every song the instruments and voices build on each other to create a whole that's greater than the sum of its parts. If that's not a metaphor for life, it's certainly a metaphor for a damn fine album.

The GKE or The Geno K Experience, is a solid, balanced act with a repertoire of short, melodic rock songs that are a blend of pleasantly scratchy vocals, imaginative lyrics and catchy music. The four-member band is led by Geno K (Eugene Kim) and includes the talented Alycia Ercums (keyboards), Max Figarsky (drums) and Jordan True (bass).


Their full-length album, The Human Geno Project, was released in early 2005. A sampling of tracks reveals that they successfully provide creative lyrics to tuneful music. Geno K writes songs about disillusionment, frustration, and loneliness, yet maintains a feeling of hope with a persuasive sense of the personal. Their song lyrics ask for love and renewal. “Steal my soul and come and save me…come and heal me…love isn’t free.” There’s a pervasive sense of conscious melancholy, but Geno K has enough literary talent to avoid being self-pitying or excessively repetitive.

Overall, Geno K is a likable and enjoyable band, catchy and melodic, making up with consistency. Their distinguishing characteristics are Geno K’s creative lyrics and distinctive voice, which adds a certain texture to their songs that saves them from blandness. Geno K’s goal for the band is that they “…break the barriers of our bland, ever deteriorating pop music landscape.” While they haven’t quite broken barriers, The Geno K Experience does manage to provide pop rock with more substance than the norm.
