This particular night, if you can remember, was one of the coldest and iciest nights of Chicago winter we’ve felt this year. The bill at the venue had two bands that complimented each other well. The opening band goes by the name of Genome. They’re from Chicago and they bring a lot more to the table than just a cool name.
Genome didn’t just hide in the shadow of Kinetix though. Let’s start at the beginning of the night where any story should begin. Rolling six deep, Genome blended instrumental and electronic sounds including the saxophone and trombone. Horns are always and forever a welcomed sound in this city, especially when it comes to a funk track. And that’s exactly what they started with. Between Patrick Dinnen’s slamming bass sound and Kyle Madsen’s sax, the opening track was the unky in funky.
Their next track took a sharp turn into the reggae realm, giving everyone a chance to catch their breath. They nailed that classic dub sound with echoing guitar and simple organ melodies. The first two tracks were the most impressive, showing their young talent off. This band has so much potential and the direction they are going is a positive one. Up next was Genome, a recently formed and ambitious local band. Since it's a Chicago jamtronica band, naturally Igor Voltchenko is a part of it. He's the guitar chameleon, and blends into any jam-dance band with the perfect auditory hues. It also features a dual-headed horn monster of Xavier Galdon on trombone and Kyle Madson on saxophone (and flute) to add a rich & dynamic dimension to the sound.
Simply put, this band is energetic, forward-moving pure jamtronica. Galdon (on an Ableton) and Asif Wilson (on a Moog Voyager) brought that space traveling energy with their electro sounds while Drew Littel got nasty on the electric drum paddles. Together they created an tight & spacey ball of sound that danced upon the strong basslines of Patrick Dinnen. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there was something I really enjoyed about his style & tone. It came through as strong as any bass guitar I've heard in jamtronic music. Genome is a group of musicians that came together in the winter of 2010. The idea was to put together a diverse group of musicians, each bringing a unique perspective and style, to create a rich tapestry of sound and color. Blending elements of jazz and improvised rock together with the tightly knit layers of funk and the dance floor sensibilities of the DJ/Rave culture, the mix proved explosive and intoxicating, all while floating atop an eclectic array of worldbeat grooves. The band deftly combines organic improvisation and audience interaction with mind bending electronic sound manipulation, adding an entirely new dimension to the labyrinth of melody, harmony and rhythm. The music of Genome acts as a gateway to a new freedom of mind and spirit through the ritual of music, dance, and Dionysian celebration. The Genome project is not about the members of the band alone, but rather, the love and community of its supporters and friends. The band makes the music, the people dance to the music, and everyone gets lifted together!
