"DAWN CD Review"

I have to admit when I first popped the Geomancer disc in my stereo I had no idea what to expect. With song titles like "Ninja Forest" who knows what's going to come out of your speakers. As soon as the music began my fears were quickly washed away. This is band is really onto something here. They have amazing musicianship accompanied by awesome songwriting ability. To my dismay there are no vocals in this entire release. With all but one of the four songs clocking in at over 13 minutes you may think that this would get old, but it never does.

From the dueling lead guitars, to the odd time signatures, to the powerful harmonies, this is an amazing release from such a young band, or just about any band for that matter. Everything feels flawless in the songs from the acoustic guitars to the addition of the violin. At first I was a bit put off by the fact that there were no vocals, but by the time I had reached midway through the second song, I could've cared less. The music speaks on a level all its own. At times it reminded me of Opeth and at others I thought of the old-school Metallica instrumentals like Orion. With powerful solos and mesmerizing interludes Geomancer always has you wondering what's around the next corner.

Geomancer is a definitive band in the ever growing genre known as Progressive Metal, and rightfully so. To see this band disappear without a chance to do a proper release for an album would be a true shame. If you can obtain this self-titled release I highly recommend you do so, because I have a feeling we'll be hearing a lot from this band in the very near future. This is truly a treat for the ears.

"DAWN CD Review"

Being a writer, I've had the fortune (sometimes misfortune) of getting to check out hundreds of demo bands making their start. And I can honestly say that I've rarely if ever heard anything quite as promising as Geomancer. They've got a great concept, a killer knack for songwriting and amazing technical prowess to boot. Their four song demo showcases well thought out progressive, instrumental, melodic and technical metal. The band features your typical lineup of a drummer, a bassist and two guitarists, but the twist comes in with a violinist. The sound doesn't center around this not-so-metal instrument, but it adds an extra dynamic. In the music, comparisons can be made to such bands as Opeth, Death or older Metallica. The shortest song is almost ten minutes long and there are two that are only a hair under sixteen minutes each. That is epic songwriting if I've ever heard it. And at no point in any of these opuses does the music get boring. There is plenty of interesting lead work, awe-inspiring harmonies and immaculate song structures. This is a musician's dream. The only thing that takes away from this demo is the poor production. While it's expected from a band in its early stages, I can only imagine how much more jaw-dropping this demo would have been if everything were more clean, clear and crisp sounding. The sound is a minor aside from the extraordinary music that Geomancer outputs.

If this band doesn't get signed or at least release some more songs soon, it's a travesty to underground metal. For a band with this much raw talent and song writing ability to go unnoticed, it would really be unfair.

Bio

Geomancer is an all instrumental progressive metal band from southern New England. Compared to bands such as Dream Theater, Death, Iron Maiden, and Opeth, Geomancer defies the repetition of modern metal with epic tracks accompanied by violin and absent of vocals.

Geomancer began as a 2 man project back in 1999, and with the addition of 2 new members, the first demo "Dawn" was recorded and distributed worldwide in 2002. After a rigorous stint of touring and a short break, Geomancer released another 3 song demo of new material in 2004. The addition of Danielle Turano in 2007 completed the lineup and Geomancer is currently preparing to tour in support of their newest release, Illumination.
