Local music, music news and musical interviews
Show hosts are Brian Hazelbower & Pam Edgar - CHLY 101.7 Radio Malaspina

"Most Outstanding Submission"

It was good to talk to you, always a pleasure. Again, I just had to call in person because your CD “Stand by Me” really was the most outstanding submission I enjoyed this year. For me, honestly it was one of the most powerful things I have listened to in years. Seriously, I listened to it about five times in a row one night and quite a few times since. What can I say? Cool on Ya.

- Norm Cassler, Director , Maple Ridge Jazz&Blues Festival

"'Pickin' Up The Pieces'"

A refreshingly down-to-earth writer and a superb solo musician with an amazingly-articulate voice to deliver his compositional expertise, Barnum elopes with the true grit of the blues and tethers it tightly to softer ballads and folkier wanderings... all with a humongous heartful of soul.
This CD nicely captures the diversity of Barnum's rich delivery and features many of Vancouver Island's ablest musicians... all mixed by Paul Laine and mastered by Scott Littlejohn.
My personal favourites are Gerry's solo tracks: 'My Hometown', 'Time In Heaven' and the glowing guitar n' blues-harped instrumental 'Tres Jolie', a cosmos-friendly foray into the blessed unknown.
Nothing quite matches the magic of hearing Barnum's sweat-soaked solo performance at a live venue... with 2000-watts of front-end to grasp his amazing and comprehensive attack on strings, slide, footstomp and vocal rasps n' highs (Barnum has shared the stage with John Hammond, Lyle Lovett, Dwight Yoakam, John Mayall, Los Lobos)... but if yer stuck in a bachelor apartment complex between payday and a place called Paldi... this CD will help lift your spirits. - Comic Debris Musicians Magazine

"Warm and Intimate Presentation"

Warm and intimate presentation: down to earth songwriting and wonderful mix of hot guitar licks and harmonica. Gerry has a talent for weaving tales and music, whether he is in front of a livingroom full of people with an acoustic guitar or with a full house in a concert setting. His storytelling and personal connection with the audience made for a fantastic evening. We look forward to Gerry passing through town again. - Sean Sharpe, Smithers Midsummer Festival Coordinator

"World Class CD"

“An excellent song-writer with a world-class CD, Pickin’ Up the Pieces.” - Jeff Weaver, CBC Radio

Bio

Gerry Barnum is a well seasoned artist with over 30 years of performing experience in venues as diverse as stadiums to coffeehouses, house concerts, major theaters and studios. Gerry divides his time between teaching and performing solo as well as with his band. His style can be described as "soulful roots original" and his songwriting ranges from tender to footstompin'.

Gerry's is often referred to as a "musician's musician"
and has been featured on many recordings. After a dozen years in the Vancouver music scene, as well as some cross Canada touring, Gerry moved back to Vancouver island where he recorded his first CD "Pickin up the Pieces". Gerry performed solo extensively over the next ten years.

Since his last recording "Live at the Blues Underground" in 08 which was a tribute to his roots and his interpretations of some classic Blues songs, Gerry has definitely shifted into some new terrain. It's still roots and rhythm but the new recordings are influenced by some altered guitar tunings that he has been exploring and writing around.

There's just a bit of a jazz influence emerging and the sonic landscape has definitely widened way out with the addition of a keyboardist. Gerry is also getting more into arrangement rather than straight composition with the live ensemble in mind.

On stage what you can expect from Gerry is well crafted songwriting and excellent musicianship.

Gerry's songs stand up very well with just an acoustic guitar, harmonica and voice: and with his ensemble; the songs have a great set of legs to stretch out and move and groove with.

Gerry has completed his fifth recording titled "Step On In" featuring twelve new original songs, released in June 2011.

“I just finished listening to “Step on In”...Wonderful! From the very strong first track to the final touching piece, it's a terrific CD.”
