Gestures is the project of Asian-Canadian singer-songwriter Jonathan Wu, raised in Hong Kong and currently based out of Toronto, ON. Anchored by a folk, singer-songwriter aesthetic that’s filled with sweet melodies and reflective lyrics, Gestures collages together electronic sounds along with orchestral flourishes. The music comes from a desire to communicate on all levels--through the lyrics, rhythms, textures, harmonies--and to make sense of the tangled and inarticulate thoughts that dig into the songwriter’s own history; the histories around him; the work of poets like Wilfred Owen, Dylan Thomas, and Ezra Pound and ethnographer such as Ronald Takaki. In the past, Jonathan has opened for acts including The Morning Benders (now known as Pop Etc.), The Freelance Whales, as well as Jose Gonzalez.
