"Morning Sun"

Clip on Mess + Noise TV - Mess and Noise

"Ghost Drums Morning Sun"

I posted the video for this track a while back. I’d not heard of Ghostdrums until then, but the unassuming, ‘analogue-synths-meets-glitch-meets-lofi-meets-lullabies’ sound of Perth drummer-cum-electronica kid Pete Guazzelli caught my attention on first listen . It’s weird because there’s nothing really about this track that makes you stop and pay attention – it’s almost deliberately dry and understated. And yet it works, and the genius of his tracks’ simplicity unravels with each successive listen. It’s also weird that, despite alove of analogue equipment, Guazzelli has eschewed a vinyl release for a limited edition USB. It should be noted that the USB comes in an old cassette tape case, and it’s this combination of the new and the old – the digital and the analogue – that makes this music alluring, especially since it extends even to its packaging. - Who The Bloody Hell Are They?

The lead track off Ghostdrums’ forthcoming self-titled EP. Such a beautiful filmclip – a “love letter to vintage equipment” indeed. - Who The Bloody Hell Are They?

"Ghostdrums - Ghostdrums (Love Is My Velocity)"

Sometimes I just know I’m going to like a release well before I ever get to put the actual media into the appropriate player and listen to the music. The judgement relies on the æsthetic of the artwork, the care which has obviously been taken. A lack of hyperbole in the press release also helps. Ghostdrums pretty much ticked all the boxes well before I heard the sounds. My promo release version came in two different formats – CD-R and a copy of the actual release format – a USB memory stick housed inside a cassette case. The stick contains a flash site via which you can navigate through the tracks and also watch a bonus video for ‘Morning Sun’. The video itself contains minimal vanity shots of some impressive vintage sound gear – tape delays, cassette players, oscilloscope, tone generator and the like. It’s a perfect backdrop to the twinkling, music box led track which loops through a gentle chordal progression with a simple synth kick drum and electronic organ backing.

The other three tracks utilise a similar palette of minimal electronics, sine waves, live drums looped and cut up and live percussion. Pete Gauzzelli is Ghostdrums and his background is as a drummer, which can be heard in his sturdy rhythms. Much of the other sonic information is utilised rhythmically as well, melodies remaining simple both structurally and timbrally. A Socialist bent can be seen in the track titles – ‘The Internationalist’ and ‘Red Thread’ in particular. Perhaps this reflects the idea of a 21st century folk music, built on universally accessible technology to be shared with the world. Ghostdrums is a greatly engaging example of acoustically/digitally based, blended, electronically manipulated bedroom-folk. I recommend it highly.

"Ghostdrums - Morning Sun"

As an eight year old learning to play the drums, Pete Guazzelli came up with an inventive way to make sure his family didn’t disown him. By draping a big white sheet (complete with eyeholes) over the top of his kit, he muffled the noise and created Ghostdrums. After a fruitful period drumming in Perth bands like Fall Electric, The Kids and Gata Negra, Pete has revisited the Ghostdrums set up by building a unique machine from parts lying around the house.

Combining a gold-sparkle drum kit with pedals, synths, loopers and the junk-percussion clogging up the spare room, Ghostdrums is the new solo project from this long-time Perth-based musician.

On his self-titled EP, Ghostdrums’ experimental electronica combines intricate production with a lo-fi acoustic sound that’s as innocent and whimsical as his performance set-up. - Amrap

"Ghostdrums - Ghostdrums"

For years Pete Guazzelli has been one of the premier drummers on the local scene but rarely has he fronted his own project. There were times when he would write and sing tunes in Harry Smith, but his latest project is a different beast altogether.

Guazzelli has been prone to placing a white sheet over his drums to muffle the sounds, thus inspiring the name Ghostdrums. Working as a solo artist the new project combines his gold-sparkle drumkit with pedals, synths, loops and junk-percussion to produce a lo-fi electronica of the highest order.

Morning Sun has the sound of Múm playing in a child’s bedroom while The Internationalist draws from Guazzelli’s rock roots to be the most overtly drum driven track. Clouds Painted On has irrepressible synth lines that would make Dosh proud, whilst Red Thread continues the striking foray into glitch.

The attention to detail that characterises the tunes is also evident in the packaging as Ghostdrums is delivered in full multimedia splendour on USB format and held in a cutely packaged cassette case. There are few people in Perth who would have the capacity and nous to do what Ghostdrums are doing, but after first listen most will wish they could. - Xpress Magazine

"Ghostdrums - Ghostdrums (Love Is My Velocity)"

Whether this be an endearing side part or the potential start of some grand new venture is irrelevant (well… secretly I hope it’s the latter), because Ghostdrums is an instance of sheer brilliance. Best bit? It’s the music of local Perth boy Pete Guazzelli, producing an EP of truly international standards. What’s so charming about this music is its 8-bit simplicity, the audible tick and throw of ’80s synths coming together to create a lo-fi sound that rivals the biggest and best in the genre. Experimental, percussive and uplifting, this is a little gem for those who like their music intelligent and quirky. – Scott-Patrick Mitchell - Out In Perth
