"Rock Lotto is a Rock Jack-pot!" - Roctober Magizine

"Memphis Rocker takes a chance"

Matt Isbell Rock Lotto Review from www.bandnation.com
I recently picked up Memphis, TN native Matt Isbell’s new release, “Rock Lotto. At first glance I thought “if this record is as good as its packaging, he’s got a hit on his hands. Not only is the artwork superior, but the concept is genius. The song names are revealed by scratching off the back as if it were a lottery ticket, hence the name “Rock Lotto. In a time where originality is scarce and creativity is left up to the artist’s “people, Matt Isbell has managed to put out a record that he not only wrote, produced and performed, but uniquely designed as well. As its name implies, the first song, “Welcome to the Show invites you to hear the record with powerful guitar riffs and energetic vocals. As you keep listening, you hear remnants of 90’s inspired arrangements and a 60’s style pop energy. “Straight Line cannot be described as anything other than “rock. It is not under one of the subsets that everyone places themselves in; it is plain and simply Alan Freed’s definition of Rock ‘N Roll. Following in this pattern is “Live Wire which is sure to become a bar favorite. It is danceable and provocative. “Underground Motel… get ready to do the cool kid foot tap when you hear it. The vocals are strong and dark although the song is extremely upbeat. It’ll instantly drag you in. “If I Choose You delves into typical relationship problems while not being cliché. It is extremely radio friendly and one of my favorites. “BBE is sweet and melodic at first. The strings add a very powerful and soothing sound. “BBE then transitions into the last song, “Go!. I think this was a great choice to finish off the record. The first song that came to mind when I heard it was Godsmack’s “Voodoo. Although “Go! is not nearly as dark, Isbell’s vocals are reminiscent of the vocals used in “Voodoo. If you are looking for the typical indie, emo, or pop rock sound you find flooding record stores today, don’t look here. With striking musicianship and ingenuity, Isbell’s “Rock Lotto can be described only as a distinctive record that is incomparable to much of what is out there today. I give it a thumbs up!

“This newest band that Matt has, The Ghost Town Blues Band is a great 3 piece with grownlin’ bass, funky beats and screamin’ guitar. It’s got a real Memphis feel and they change things up enough that the blues doesn’t get boring and repetitive.” Neil’s

“They play standard blues Songs that people come to Memphis to hear and then they take songs like Come Together from the Beatles and make it sound like the North Mississippi All-stars cut time or they slow down Folsom Prison Blues and make it sound like Robert Cray is ripping into it. They got it down.” Memphis Music and Heritage Festival
