Sydney’s indie music scene is peaking right now and one noteworthy band is Ghostwood. Their latest record, Rest My Soul [listen below], is just as ace as Red Version (the Pokémon-aluding hit from 2006). The melodic single bears elements of shoegaze, skilfully layering intricate guitar patterns with sultry bass, solid drumming and haunting vocals to create an ethereal ambiance. Ghostwood formed in 2006 with Gabriel Navidzadeh (vocals/guitar), Paddy Harrowsmith (guitar) and Tom Crandles on bass.
Starting out recording demos with a basic drum machine- the line up was soon complete when drummer James West joined the group.
The magic of their performance was now realised. Their distinctive live sound, reminiscent of the exciting rawness of early Factory Records bands, earning them a steady stream of fans.
With the buzz continuing to build, the music industry started to take notice; the guys went onto share the stage with The Klaxons, Howling Bells and Mercy Arms.
The publics appetite was suitably wet, so in true Ghostwood style the band locked themselves away in the studio for a month to master their sound.
The result was an impressive and refreshingly mature self-titled EP featuring five new tracks. Red Version immediately grabbed the public attention. With its ominous sparseness and sweeping simplicity, Triple J Australia quickly picked up Red Version.
The band finished off their school duties in earnest in 2008 to begin what is surely a long and successful career in the music industry. Spending the following year honing their developing sound in the studio whilst touring with the likes of the Silversun Pickups, Maximo Park, Van She, The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Rakes.
Ghostwood are currently writing/recording in L.A and London for their up coming debut album.
They have attracted strong interest from the UK & U.S on the back of their latest demos
.There is something in their new music that feels arrived, a sense that they have found their own musical zenith.
