Bio

Giancarlo Scalia was born in Montreal, Quebec. At the age of 10, he began his musical education studying under the wing of Mr.Paolo Vani and the McGill Conservatory of Music. His musical lessons have included piano studies, harmony, composition and theory. His repertoire consists mainly of the pieces of his idol and main inspiration, Frederyk Chopin, and by his own musical compositions. His compositions number in the 80s and are for a variety of instruments. When not for piano solo, they can be for orchestra, chamber groups or unusual trios and quartets. His compositional style is a unique blend of classical-romantic and comtemporary melodic and harmonic styles and usually has a very distinctive tonal melody flowing through them. Other inspirations in his musical writing include Ennio Morricone, Ludwig van Beethoven and Jordan Rudess. In December 2004, he was commissioned to compose a short piece for 1 piano, 8 hands, hence giving birth to his Rondo Facile, op.29. In March 2005, Giancarlo Scalia entered the studio to record his first cd album, entitled "Sogno d'Amore" (Liebestraum). The cd, released in April 2005 through Davisca Productions, is a compilation featuring 14 of his personal compositions for piano solo. The tracks include, among others; Liebestraum, Ballade in C, Sonata in G Minor and a piano solo arrangemant of Grief and Despair. The cd is available in Quebec, Canada through the music chain ARCHAMBAULT. Also in the month of March, Giancarlo Scalia along with other local acts performed at four concerts to raise money for brain cancer and to promote the final concert. The concert in question, held April 19 at the Leonardo da Vinci Center, was a 3-hour long televised event. Funds were raised for the Franco di Giovanni Foundation and brain cancer. Giancarlo Scalia continues to perform and compose music. contact: giancarloscalia@hotmail.com
