Gian Slater has emerged as one of Melbournes most incisicve and original artists with a remarkably pure and mobile voice and a prolific repertiore of original material encompassing her diverse musical influences and range of emotional experiences.

Biography

Born in Canberra, Gian Slater began performing at the age of four. With both of her parents heavily involved in music, Gian had an abundance of encouragement to pursue a music career. She began studying piano at age six, was singing in many concerts locally and nationally, and toured to the U.S.A 1996.
In 2001, Gian moved to Melbourne to commence a Bachelor of music performance degree at the Victorian College of the Arts where she recieved numerous scholarships and graduated in 2003. In January 2005, she released her independant debut album, ‘In My Head’, receiving critical attention and wide praise ‘I would suggest that music lovers who relish hearing an artist perform original material with obvious sincerity would do well to keep an eye out for ‘In My Head’’ (Rhythms Magazine).
To solidify her growing reputation she was selected in 2004 as one of the four finalists in the prestigious Freedman Fellowship, and performed alongside some of Australia’s most refined musicians at the Sydney Opera House. She was also selected as a finalist in the National Jazz Awards (Voice) in 2005.
For the past 2 years, Gian has been composing and performing with a new band made up of some of Melbourne’s most exciting and unique musicians. She plans to release her second album by the begginning of 2007.
