Biography

The album, [Holes In The Ground], is decidedly alternative in feel, but eclectic in sound. Folk influenced melodies, electronic tones and hip hop samples come together to produce avant-garde, progressive music of an inventive artist. ~ Helen Leicht, WXPN

Immersed in the Philadelphia music scene, Giant Mind can frequently be caught at one of Philadelphia's most beloved indie venues. Whether it be a local show or as touring support, venues like Johnny Brenda's, Kung Fu Necktie, North Star Bar, and the M-Room have been home to the band for the past year.

Originally conceived to perform behind band member Greg Puglese's 2009 album, Holes in the Ground, the band has brought the album to the attention of many. Along with being aired on various radio stations including Philadelphia's prestigious WXPN, The Sub-Rock Music Hour on WNRB-LP 93.3FM, and appearing on Volta Internet Radio for a two-hour interview and album showcase, the band's commitment to performing live as much as possible has garnered a growing fan base. When not playing shows at festivals like 2010's Philadelphia Film and Music Festival, performing alongside headlining acts like The Dead Milkmen and A Sunny Day in Glasgow, the band can sometimes be caught busking on street corners or performing an acoustic set somewhere you might least expect it.

The band has also played various shows on the East Coast, including shows in NYC at places like Lit Lounge, and have been honored to share the stage with bands like Locksley, Andrew Lipke, The Big Pink, Cheers Elephant, MEM, and TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb.

Lyrics

The Long Road

Written By: Greg Puglese

She took the long road but always seemed to come up short
I guess she never really gave it all her best effort
She got addicted to the comforts of a simple life
Yea she just never saw here self as the ambitious type

But she could still have it all if she really wants it bad enough
She’s just got to figure out what it is that she really wants

There’s still time girl, kick the habits and just get yourself back in line girl
Sometimes you’ve got to be who you’re not just to be who you are

He never thought he’d have to fall back on his backup plan
But when he did he had to learn how to become a man
He always figured that his talent would just get him by
He wasn’t hungry ‘cause he never really had to try

But he could still have it all if he really wants it bad enough
He’s just got to figure out what it is that he really wants

There’s still time boy, kick the habits and just get yourself back in line boy
Sometimes you’ve got to be who you’re not just to be who you are

There’s still time left, I’ll kick the habits but I’ll never be in the right mindset
Just to try and be who I’m not just to be who I am

Something Bigger

Written By: Greg Puglese

You’re watching TV, with a TV dinner
Today’s nothing, you were yesterday’s prizewinner
With every breath you feel your chances pull thinner
With every step you still are nothing but a beginner

But you’re hungrier than hell, I think we both know very well…

In this place, at this time, you can’t really tell me that you’re happy with your life
Things are great, things are fine, but I know you dream of something bigger

You’re watching reality TV with a snicker
The day crawls but the night could not go quicker
With every glance you feel your stomach grow sicker
With a constant need to watch a bunch of people bicker

And you’re miserable as hell, but no one rose before they fell…

In this place, at this time, you can’t really tell me that you’re happy with your life
Things are great, things are fine, but I know you dream of something bigger
Don’t you ever dream of something bigger?

Mirror Watching

Written By: Greg Puglese

Mirror watching one afternoon all alone in my childhood room
I saw the fear I’d seen every time I questioned who I was in my mind
Why I started I’ll never know, but now uncovered I can’t let go
My curiosity brings me here; a shrouded messenger of my fear

Mirror watching one afternoon, wondering now if I’m really you
Are we able to disengage the physical from the conscious state?

Now I’m wondering what divides someone’s body from someone’s mind
Could it be we don’t know ourselves any more than our outer shells?
‘Cause when you see yourself face to face, you can free yourself from one space
But I’m afraid that one day I’ll learn that it’s impossible to return

Lost in Hiding

Written By: Greg Puglese

Well I've been lost in hiding, try and find me my friend
And I've not yet decided if I'll surface again

Again…

Maybe I should just stay lost
Disregard what's true and false
Forget what I'll miss... Nothing comes without cost
So maybe I could just stay lost

Well I've been gone so long I don't know how I'd amend
And I can't say I'd want to ever stop playing pretend

Pretend…

Living for the Future

Written By: Greg Puglese

Since we spend our whole lives living for the future, in our pasts were we alive?
It seems like just another convoluted question, but I ask it all the time
Our whole lives we have been living for the future, saying one day we’ll be great
But the whole time we’ve been stuck right here in neutral, asking why we have to wait

Time ain’t gonna change us, people act so bizarre
Always planning to be what we already are
Time ain’t gonna change us, people are what they are
You can cover a wound but it still leaves a scar

Now I know people change for worse if not for better, that much I cannot deny
But the reasons that we really have to live for are changed by no amount of time
So tell me why we keep on living for the future, saying one day this and that
But if one day shows up quick without announcement, we might not get one day back

Little Black Stars

Written By: Greg Puglese

Winding up, pushing forward
All we are, are kids
Winding down, we just started
Where did we begin?

We drive cars to these little black stars but they don’t ever look the same
Can’t go far ounce you’re on the radar but we don’t ever leave the same

Empty skulls, once so vibrant
All indulge, in lies
What we’re told soon replaces
What we felt inside

Holes in the Ground

Written By: Greg Puglese

A sea full of sunken ships, I thought for certain they’d sail
The water’s getting colder now, every time that I bail
Looking for daylight so I can find my own way
But failure looming overhead darkens each day

I shot up towards the sky but what goes up always comes down,
I shot to many holes in the ground.

Days at sea away from home tend to affect my health
They make me wonder what I’m doing, and make me doubt myself
When all I see is blue and gray, I tend to want much more
Like sand under my feet and the support of the shore.

I’m still looking for the bright side, even though it’s hard to find
And I’m still taking all my chances, putting all my bets aside

How Unkind

Written By: Greg Puglese

Sunlight.
Go Time.
No Time.
Show Time.

You're starting a race that's all downhill but
You're picking up speed against your will
Oh what a ride...

Parent's
Basement
Payment
Statements

You're finding it hard to make amends with
a cycle that snowballs till it ends
Oh how unkind...

Long Lines
Wrong Lines
Flood lines
Bloodlines

You're waving a flag that says "Surrender"
But deep down you know you will defend
Every time...

Sunlight.
Go Time.
No Time.
Show Time.

Still running that race that's all downhill but
You're nearing the end against your will
Oh how unkind...

Oh what a ride...

Planet of Nothing

Written By: Greg Puglese

The workers toiled in silence, never saw their neighbor's face
Nor did they ounce look up to see the vastness of the place
They worked in their entire dull lives
They knew that there was no point to try

Cause they were each inside of a formless enclosure which
obstructed all communication and exposure to their
limitless surroundings outside
the shapeless forms where they were confined

Stranded on a planet of nothing
Stranded on a planet of nothing, we are

The workers weren't abundant there were only just a few
And they were all alone in this place, though it was so huge
They virtually sat side by side
And back to back stacked countless times high

They used to wonder how they had come to exist and why
They had to be so close together and stacked up so high
They looked just like a rickety building;
A high rise on a planet of nothing

Stretching toward the sky
Hopeless and contrived
Broken but alive
They smile

Guntown Mountain

Written By: Greg Puglese

Guntown Mountain, a freckle on the country side
Parking lots, are littered with amusement rides
Well this ain't no suburbia
A tattered past-time hernia
Guntown Mountain, a riddle to all passers by

In Guntown Mountain, we all look so sane

In Guntown Mountain, we all look so sane, we all look so plain.

Guntown Mountain, a chairlift to oblivion
Sunlight shining, the old reptiles are glimmering
Well this ain't no grand getaway
But still I just can't look away
Guntown Mountain, oh what a world we're living in

The only thing that makes sense is that nothing makes sense at all

Looming

Written By: Greg Puglese

Spring has come
Nature is blooming
Eager now,
Change has been looming in me

All the seeds in the soil have been waiting months to break
But ounce they root in the ground there is just one course to take

And in some odd way, sometimes I wish I were they, the gift of choice can sometimes bear an awful weight

All the dandelion seed pods drift across the land
And although they seem nomadic they are at the wind's command

So maybe we, shouldn't worry, maybe something else controls our destiny

Spring has come
Nature is blooming
Eager now,
Change has been looming in me
