"Gina Alibrio, The Voice of An Angel"

Ever since Gina Alibrio was very young, she loved to perform for family and friends. Now she plans to turn a lifelong love of theater and music into a career.

Alibrio, 18, said her parents, MaryJo and Gino, made the right decision by sending her to St. Andrew's Musical Kindergarten.
They saw her potential, and as people say, 'the rest is history.'

While a student at McKelvie Middle School, Alibrio was cast in the McKelvie Players' productions of "Oliver" and "Bye Bye Birdie," and was a member of the McKelvie Choir.

She continued her love of singing and performing in high school and in community theatre, often being cast in lead and supporting roles, she said.

Alibrio has performed in "My Fair Lady" with the Majestic Theatre, and in many plays with the Acting Loft, including, "Grease" and one of her favorite plays, "Godspell."

"It's always been fun and it's a way to release," she said.

Playing the lead role of Rose in the recent West High School Theatre Knights production of "Gypsy" was very challenging and rewarding for Alibrio.

"The character was very complex. I've never sung that much in a show and Rose sang a song in almost every scene," Alibrio said. "I'm very similar to Rose in a way, because we're both loud and ambitious, but at the same time we're pretty insecure."

Alibrio is a member of the Acting Lofts Second Stage Series, "Improv at the Institute," and said the company is like a second home, along with West High School.

Last summer, she also interned with the Acting Loft's "Storytime Theatre." During the six-week program, the group produced six interactive children's shows. The cast acted in the show, built the sets and made costumes.

"Children are a completely different audience," she said. "It was crazy, but it was awesome."|
For the past three years, she has taken singing lessons at the Manchester Community Music School with instructor Mark Cleveland.

"Over the years, he's helped me a lot. He has really made my voice what it is today," she said.
She is a member of the West High Select Chorus, and has participated in the Jazz All-Star Choir and the Classical All-Star Choir.
"Jazz is my forte," she said.
She recently received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award from West High School

"Mr. (Richard) Maynard selects a member of the choir who participates in Jazz All-Stars, is good with vocal improvisations, and knows how to work with the jazz genre."

As West's choir director, Maynard cares a lot about his students, Alibrio said. He has helped her develop her musical talents, and supported her choice of careers.

She has been accepted at Emerson College in Boston and will major in musical theater.
"I can't see myself doing anything else as a career because that's what makes me happy," she said. "I like to have fun. I work hard at theater. It's a big commitment, but I will let go and have fun."

Alibrio cites her parents for giving her support, whether driving her to rehearsals, attending plays or driving to New York, Boston or Pennsylvania for college auditions, she said.

"They're perfect just the way they are," she said. "For theater parents, it's very hard to just sit back and let your child perform, fail or succeed. My parents are there when I need them and not there when I don't."

Her mother is an eighth-grade teacher at McKelvie School, and her father is a professor at the University of New Hampshire.
"My dad is a graduate of the Culinary Institute and is a fantastic cook. I'm going to miss that so much next year," she said.

Alibrio will graduate from West with a 3.5 grade-point average, but said math is her toughest subject.

"With that "x plus y" stuff, you really lose me," she said.
One of her many other talents is writing. As part of an assignment for teacher Tim Benner's theater class, she co-wrote a script with student Laine Goerner. The play will be performed by her theater class in June, she said.

The play is entitled, "Perfect," and tell - TriPod Press
