Atlanta, GA (March 19, 2007) – Industry leader Radio and Records reports that Gina Darby's single "YES" has re-entered the Urban AC Charts, holding the #33 position just ahead of Mary J. Blige (#34) and Nas (#40).
How is "YES" blazing its own path to success? Beginning with a crazy street buzz in Chicago, WVAZ was the first to add "YES" followed by Washington, DC's WHUR-FM and XM Radio Suite 62. Highly supported among radio personalities such as Herb Kent, DJ Maurice "Ice" Culpepper and Armando Rivera, "YES" has also won favor with radio decision makers including Elroy Smith, program director WGCI and WVAZ-FM Chicago and Billboard's 2006 UAC Music Director of the Year, Terry Bello.
"YES" is the lead single from One More Day and is the first solo project from Gina Darby and Jam Lam Records. Darby is writer; vocal arranger and performer on the project that features work from former Grover Washington Jr. MD/Arranger Bill Jolly and Jazz great Branford Marsalis. Darby, often compared to Minnie Ripperton has shared the stage with musical greats as Angela Bofill, Freddie Jackson and Josh Groban. She has performed on major stages across the US including The Montreux Jazz Festival (Atlanta) and The Women Who Jam Tour. With her single “Yes” on over 40 stations and steadily gaining ground in the United States, Europe, The Netherlands, Germany, and more since being added at Chicago’s V103, WVAZ-FM, Gina, a Gary/Chicago native, now residing in Atlanta, is turning heads and making ‘em bobb! “Blues and Soul” Magazine’s album review gives Gina four stars!
As writer, vocal arranger, and performer on her 1st solo project, “One More Day,” composed by former Grover Washington, Jr. MD/Arranger, Bill Jolly and featuring Branford Marsalis, she has already crossed over the adult contemporary, soul, smooth jazz, and gospel lines. The excitingly broad range of musical styles she employs is purely captivating, as is the five octave range she laces through the fabric of her melodies. She has shared the stage with many from Angela Bofill to Freddie Jackson to Josh Groban. She rocks “Second Chance” on a compilation with Vivian Green, Toni Braxton, and Yolanda Adams-the same song nominated for GMA’s Unsigned Gospel Hip Hop Song of the Year. During the 2006 Labor Day Weekend, she performed “Yes” on Fox TV’s Good Day Atlanta and assembled her friends, Sheldon Reynolds (EWF), Bill Jolly, and others as she headlined Sunday Night at the world-renowned, Montreux Jazz Festival in Atlanta, the only North American city to host music’s most prestigious concert. NARAS Atlanta Board Member, Dee Dee Murray, says, “My kids have to hear Gina every time we get in the car. This project needs to be heard.”
Once a back-up singer for Billboard Dance Chart-topper, Shawn Christopher, Gina was routinely handed the mike from Jonathan Butler while sitting in the audience. In 2005, doing original material from what is now the album, “One More Day,” she “wowed” the crowd in performance and served as a judge for HOTT 1075’s Bermuda Idol and opened for “Rare Earth” at the country’s largest Fourth of July celebration, The Detroit/Canadian Fireworks. And even more, she performed at the Dr. Bobby Jones International Retreat Luncheon and brought the audience to its feet at the Gospel Heritage Independent Artist Showcase.
With the completion of her album in 2006, Gina hit radio stations, performances, and interviews from coast to coast, along with almost every music festival Atlanta could host. She joined a five-city tour with “Women Who Jam” and found herself “added” in Chicago with the single, “Yes.” It was some time ago that “Yes,” originally written by Sylvia Bennett-Smith, appeared on Gina’s first demo. With new verses and new bridge, Sylvia and Gina share the credit as writers with Bill Jolly and Marc MDOC Williams as composers. And, it was that demo that first caught the attention of PD/OPM, Elroy Smith, who aired Gina’s “Whatcha Gonna Do For Me” on “Chicago Home Jams.” She was compared to the likes of Minnie Riperton and the song was dubbed, “major.” Shortly thereafter, the budding songstress was named one of the “Midwest Gap’s Rising Stars.” It was during that time that Gina, though raised in church, was compelled to search out her own way. She desired to have impact. She desired to be clear. She decided to put the music on “hold” and responded to the call to leave her corporate gig, not for the music, as she had been many times challenged to do, but to serve in the full-time women’s ministry. And, the bud continues to blossom. Currently, Gina is constructing the theme song for the international, “Youth For Human Rights” organization, amidst the ever-growing requests for her time and talent.
