Bio
Gin Lane was created in the ashes of Kaohsiung, Taiwan's premier ex-pat rock band "Wounded Night". WN co-founder and lead vocalist, Evan Spinney and sax/harp player, Simon Thorley teamed up to form Gin Lane. The two songwriters needed time on the stage and more avenues for their original, more folk-oriented tunes.
Shortly after GL's creation, with half a dozen gigs under their belts, GL picked up guitar player/singer-songwriter Mark Olijnyk. His smooth vocals and lofty range made him a perfect fit into GL's style and vision. This also freed Evan up to play the mandolin and lap steel guitar, adding another element to the bands already unique collection of instruments.
Time in Taiwan is always limited for foreigners, so after only a short year and a half of delighting audiences over-seas, each member said goodbye and headed for home. As luck would have it, Evan and Mark wound up living in Kitchener, dusted of the song-sheets and started gigging again. We're still working on Simon to dust of the saxes and book a flight from the UK...
Gin Lane is a collection of folk-blues-jazz and a bit of bluegrass. Anyway you swing it, the songs are heart-felt and the passion oozes out of each performance. Tight harmonies and unique arrangements are the band's signature. Influences include Levon Helm, Willie P. Bennett, Amos Lee, The Grateful Dead to name a few.
