"Weekend What's What 1/6-1/8 ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES"

WaxxMaxx, Giravves, Kill-Me Kare Bare, Baby Boys

@ Hexagon Bar
2600 27th Ave S

9 p.m. / Free

Arguably one of 2010’s best new bands to watch, WaxxMaxx (Mark Mallman’s latest electronic pop project, with sultry singer Nicole Godiva and drummer Alyssa Brenny) is playing the Hexagon Bar on Saturday, and you'll def want to be there – especially considering the three other awesome bands with whom they’ll be sharing the stage. One is the Weezer-esque local supergroup Giravves, whose members have played in ELnO, Crossing Guards, Mark Mallman, and half a dozen other bands; Kill-Me Kare Bare, who play power pop a lot less scary than their name would imply; and Baby Boys, whose fuzzy, intense stylings are among those we consider serious contender material for 2011. As you usually would at das Hex, arrive ready to rock out. - L'etoile Magazine blog

"Weekend Checklist: Best Bets"

Who says January is a slow month for shows in the Twin Cities? This weekend is jam-packed with festivities, from the Current's sold-out sixth birthday party to CD-release shows for Alpha Consumer, Gay Beast, More Than Lights, and Say Like the French Say.

Here's a rundown of our best bets for Friday through Sunday:

"Recommended shows"

Recommended shows for Saturday, October 2nd:
Bight Club with WaxxMaxx, Giravves, and Connie Hawkins
Kitty Cat Klub
Dinkytown, Mpls -

"Flyer of the Week: Giravves"

I've always thought Alf and Yoda should join forces, and now they have -- to promote this great lineup at the Entry on Saturday with the Guystorm, Crossing Guards, and new local supergroup Giravves. -

Giravves 001 (EP, 2010)
Giravves 002 (EP, 2011)
Giravves 003 (EP, ~2011)
"Automatic", "Far Away" and "My Mistakes" played/available for play on 89.3FM (The Current), 90.3FM / 106.7FM (KFAI), and 104.5FM / 770AM (Radio K).

Do you love a lead singer who plays a full drum kit (plus synth drums) while standing up? That might be the second thing that you notice, right after the fact that you can't stop bobbing your head to the infectious and familiar-seeming tunes.. Giravves is a collection of Twin Cities musicians who have played around the country in bands like Manplanet, American Paint, Divorcee, and Mark Mallman. It was their mutual love of vintage analog synthesizers by Moog and Roland (and the like) that brought them together initially, but it's their musical synergy and electric-fun presence that keeps them going strong. With an EP released, two more on the way, and a full-length album in the works soon, Giravves will be stampeding around the music scene for a long time to come.
