*EDITORS PICK
GIRL TO GORILLA- My CD- By far the best of the new CD's I am reviewing here. Not because the band are a great bunch of guys but because in my house this CD has been on constant rotation for two weeks and going strong. John Skocik just knows how to write a song. A smart guy to begin with he also has humor and opens his heart not worrying about letting his most inner feeling showcased for the world to see. Where to start, there are so many songs worth mentioning. Madeira the story of a one night stand in foreign territory is about as good as any singer/story writer can come up with. Cematary conjures up the ghosts of REM in their heyday, I wish they gave me this song for my Halloween CD, haunting and beautiful. Last Time is such a crowd pleaser live, actually the band really is worth checking out on stage where they sound even better if at all possible. Moving To LA has one hell of a buildup, see this one live as well for maximum effect. Next Weekend has a
line about being sorry for leaving a stain in the bedroom, told you the guy has a sense of humor. And then there is the song Rehab, this one tune is worth the purchase alone, hands down the best song on the subject. Amy Winehouse has nothing on this. I mean what can I say, this is a great rock n roll band. They know what it's all about. Writing songs that mean something, playing with melody and lyrics like kids in the park it almost seems effortless. I guess if I had to say one thing negative it would be that I wish they never changed the band name, The Murkins was a great F'n name, especially once you looked it up. http://www.myspace.com/girltogorilla - Vlad Vizner

"Concert Review: Beefstock 2009"

April 6, 2009

"...followed by the night’s first real surprise, Girl to Gorilla. With their two guitars, viola and rhythm section, they added a roaring, anthemic Irish edge to their janglerock, the viola in particular a plus, bringing an unexpectedly eerie edge to the upbeat catchiness of the songs. A darkly backbeat-driven number titled Next Weekend was an early highlight."
