"Seven Minutes In Heaven With Bisexual Singer/Songwriter Giselle Grayson"

It’s Bisexual Awareness Week and we’re celebrating with a slew of interviews, first-person narratives and essays. Though we always give love to the bisexual babes in our community—this week “Seven Minutes in Heaven” is solely focused on bisexual women.

You may already know the talented singer Giselle Grayson from her work with Sean Paul, T.I. and Young Jeezy. Grayson has been breaking glass ceilings and only continues to rise in her music career. She’s a true talent. And she also happens to be bisexual!

Grayson sat down with GO to talk about music, bisexual visibility and how the music industry can do better with LGBTQ representation.

GO Magazine: Who are you and what do you do?

Giselle Grayson: Most people would know me from music, I’m a singer-songwriter from Austin, TX. I’ve actually just moved back to Austin from Los Angeles this past year. My album, “SIREN,” debuted at No. 79 on the iTunes Pop Charts, and I have opened arena tours for T.I., Sean Paul, Young Jeezy, and Lloyd. I’m a passionate artist. I grew up in the industry, my dad is a Country/Blues artist, so I feel like this path was inevitable for me. No matter what I venture off into, music has always been my constant passion. But I’m also a photographer and Sr. Graphic Designer for Rooster Teeth. Art, in all forms, feeds my soul. I’m engaged to a beautiful woman, Kara Ragland, who is also an entertainer and child-whisperer—she’s a celebrity nanny.

GO: How do you hope to see bisexual visibility improve in the LGBTQ community?

GG: I’d like to see more inclusion, less stigma. A debate I have often is the way people identify my relationship with my fiancé, usually calling us a lesbian couple. I’m very sensitive to bi-erasure. I think it’s interesting that the bisexuality is often the first to be dismissed when partnering with someone who identifies strictly as straight or lesbian. Of course, I hope at the end of the day everyone grows to accept love as love, and we no longer have the need to place an identifier in front of “relationship.”

GO: Where do you go for inspiration when you’re feeling discouraged or depleted?

GG: I turn to music, always. The healing and solidarity that can be found in music is one of the greatest joys I get as an artist. So when I’m down and need to feel uplifted I always turn to music. And of course my fiancé, Kara, she’s the most encouraging, uplifting person I’ve ever met. We recently got to see the touring cast of Fun Home, and that was an incredibly moving experience. I highly recommend that musical to anyone, especially in our community. I’ve also been known to have an endless stream of Friends episodes playing in the background when I’m down.

GO: Who are your bi role models?

GG: Sara Ramirez is one of my biggest bi role models. She represents a lot of what I can relate to, not only being bi and being an advocate for the bi community, but she’s also tall, curvy, and an entertainer. It’s been very interesting to watch her journey over the past year.

Lady Gaga as well, it’s inspiring what she does for the community and the way that she exposes her vulnerability through music, fashion, and art. She is a goddess of a woman.

GO: What are you listening to right now?

GG: I’m in the studio recording an album right now, so I try to stay away from radio when I’m in that process. But I am really feeling Bishop Briggs music, she has such a unique sound. Madilyn Bailey, a cover artist on YouTube, has been on my playlists a lot lately. This past year I was introduced to Griz, and I’ve since become a fan of his music as well, I’d love to do some work with him at some point. My inner drag queen is always listening to Christina Aguilera… I really hope she tours again soon.

GO: Why is it important to have LGBTQ spaces, especially in the music industry?

GG: Inclusion is critical. I think the more awareness we have the more freedom people have to be who they are without fear. But until we have that it’s important to have place where LGBTQ people can go to feel free, uninhibited, and accepted.

I know a lot of people may not think it’s really much of an issue in Hollywood or the entertainment business, but it still really is. I had a label, not-so-subtly, ask me to not be out with my relationship. I was 2 years into my engagement with my fiancé and I just couldn’t believe that this conversation was on the table. That promptly ended my relationship with that label and I’ve been even more vocal and active in the community since then.

GO: Where can people find you?

GG: My new album “The Recollection” will be out in the winter, and I’ll be adding some tour dates in the next couple of months (after our wedding in October). Until then people can find me online. Don’t hesitate to reach out, I love interacting with new people. - Go Magazine

"Giselle Grayson, Beautiful but Dangerous! (Magazine Cover + Editorial)"

INTRODUCING
Just exactly who is Giselle Grayson? Assuredly, the question lingers in the forefront of your mind as you begin reading October's featured cover story. This specific question was the very first one posed to the lovely Ms. Grayson. Possessing an airily light, speaking voice reminiscent of cotton candy, Giselle ventured to answer this seminal query. "As an artist, I am extremely multi-faceted. I have been singing and performing since the age of 3. I'm also a songwriter, an actress and model. I also co-produce a lot of my music. I'm very hands on." Expounding further on her attributes also as a young woman, she states, "I am just a fearless activist for women's confidence. It's something that drastically changes your life when you find your own confidence and you're not trying to complete or fulfill something other than yourself. How to make [you] work for you every single day. I'm not interested in fitting into a box, it just wouldn't be real." The preceding remarks, provided by the starlet, manage to give a general overview of the lady that is Giselle Grayson. However POSE wanted more and the effervescent ingenue was eagerly willing to furnish to us just that. And then some.
BORN TO SING
Being offered your first recording contract at the tender age of9 years old, is quite the major accomplishment. Setting the bar extremely high at a very early start for the remainder of your life victories, how would you possibly one up THAT? Austin, Texas native Giselle, took it all in stride. As a young performer, she learned the artistry of song the old fashioned way ... at the knee of her blues musician father. Hollywood child star tragedies are commonplace, although occasionally there are successful transitions from adorable tyke to mature adult professional, more often than not we are sadly faced with misfortunate souls such as Judy Garland, Michael Jackson and Lindsay Lohan. Giselle credits her close knit family as her salvation during her younger days in the industry, "My mom is my best friend and my dad is such a strong performer. My parents were a major part of it, the [record] label wanted to top Leanne Rimes, who'd come out earlier [that year]. At the time, she was the youngest artist signed to a label, they basically wanted to one up that with [me]. Ultimately, my parents didn't want me to be into that lifestyle that young. On the flip side, I also watched a lot of my dad's colleagues struggle with addiction and the things the industry can do to you, [because] it's readily accessible."
Continuing along with this thoughtful reply, "For me it was fun to do as a kid and I was always extremely committed to it. But I knew I didn't want to have the majority of my career happen at that age. My parents helped me make the right choices about getting educated and going to college. Growing up in the industry taught me the best possible way for me to be in the industry as an adult. I don't want [anyone] taking away my control."
SINGER. SONGWRITER. ACTRESS.
MODEL. ATTORNEY
Wait a minute, depositions and cross examinations don't exactly fit the mandate within the eclectic arenas of creativity, but this certainly did not hinder our ambitious Miss Grayson from giving it the old 'college' try. At 17, after beginning a collaborative musical relationship with Sony Music record producers, Giselle transitioned away from her roots in country music into more of an urban pop sound. She took to university life as a fallback, while alternately pursuing her music career. Revealing the motivation behind her scholastic litigator pursuits, Giselle smiles, "I love law. My energy resides in the body of a lawyer, I watch Scandal. I love politics, I majored in political science. I wanted to go to college and experience my early 20's. To me it was just a test ifI wanted to do this after college, then I'll still do it and that's exactly what happened. It was a necessary transition, you just can't get away from what you're meant to do. I think when you realize what your purpose is, it's always going to find a way to interject itself back into your life". Giving a bit more focus to the legalese and its usefulness in her current glamour crammed lifestyle, she asserts, "I'm grateful to have it now, [because] there are so many contracts that I have to look at, I was armed with a whole lot of legal knowledge, backed by a whole lot of talent and just crazy enough to do it. .. the music was still there and it was still the thing that I wanted to do the most."
SIZE DOES MATTER
As the owner of a titanium infused sense of self-confidence, the songbird has pretty strong opinions in regards to the immense pressures forced onto women by an image fixated entertainment industry. To either fit the size 2 status quo or 'go home'. Launching into a sharply pointed retort, the diva counters, "To me, I am just tired ... I am not a fan of labels. People have some sort of weird obsession with needing to compartmentalize [everything] to make them feel good. It took me a long time to get comfortable with myself, I had an eating disorder. I struggled with it and at the end of the day, that's way too much work to be putting into someone else's perspective of who I'm supposed to be. So many young women strive to change themselves to please [others]. That's a really destructive road to go down."
Providing clarity to her previous commentary, the songstress forges ahead, "[Self] image is really important. I feel for a lot of the women out there, it's all so sad. A huge amount of it is perpetuated by the image that we put out there for women and that has to change. You can be confident at any size, as long as you're healthy. The media and the pressure to look like Britney [Spears], it's a sad thing but a reality that we have to deal with."

promoting the album, Giselle was the opening act in multiple concert arena tours for several of Hip Hop's biggest names, including I.I., Sean Paul and Young Jeezy. Performing before attending audiences upwards of 30,000, only proved to fuel the singer's passionate drive towards success. The impending October 2013, release of her sophomore disc, the urban pop odyssey Siren, has the flame haired vocalist overwhelmed with enthusiasm, excited to bare her artistic soul to the world for mass consumption. "If you listen to my album, you'll learn all you need to know about me. My first album was about my experiences with other people. I wanted to turn myself inward for [this] album and just be with myself. It's a really honest depiction of the things I've been through."
Amplifying her point of view more thoroughly, Giselle explains, "It's my life and a really accurate picture of the many sides of me. I am a different girl all the time, but I'm still me. I think a lot of women have that in them, [to be] different shades of themselves. We are so a rainbow of colors and choices and changes. That's part of the beauty of being a woman, our ability to change constantly. That's the direction of, Siren, [the word] itself meaning beautiful but dangerous." Collaborating with multi-platinum music producer, Jaylien Wesley, for Siren, those bold, sexy, sweet, sassy and mega confident qualities of Miss Grayson's persona come shining through in full force. The hit track, 'Google Me B*tch', strikes like a heat seeking missile set for detonation on the dance floor, to date Giselle's biggest selling single, this jam has blown up radio airwaves and club parties all summer long. Other standout tracks, such as 'I'm A Barbie' and 'Love Song', also are surefire hits, as well as a showcase for this talented young woman's spectacular voice.
BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG FUTURE
At the age of 27, with a highly anticipated, major label release set for her sophomore album, Siren, a critically acclaimed film debut and multiple spokes model gigs under her belt, Giselle Grayson's star is set for an accelerated launch into the stratosphere. When urged to disclose the recipient(s) of her deepest gratitude, the soulful lark contends, "I think the people you keep around you affect your life dramatically. I am exceptionally blessed in the friends and family pool. My parents, my older brothers, my friends, my chocolate lab, Anniekins. They all keep me humble and grounded, reminding me to slow down and not work so much. I love them for that. Keeping it real and allowing myself to be me without the cameras on. I have amazing family and friends."
To honor her 'ambulance chaser' background, a request was made for closing arguments from the rising star to, us the jury, the readers of POSE, she adamantly declares, "I am exactly who I am. You have to be completely comfortable and happy with who you are at any given moment." - POSE Magazine

"Rising Star | Giselle Grayson"

What’s a girl crush?
Someone I give huge props to and someone you should know. My girl crushes are the girls that inspire me and have so much superstar oozing from their bodies that they leave me in awe.
This one is dedicated to Giselle Grayson. I met her about a week ago, after her PR company emailed me to introduce her new album. I checked out her site and songs and instantly was crushing…there’s just something about her! Love it. It’s no wonder she’s opened for T.I., Young Jeezy, Sean Paul and more and has already toured much of the globe.

When you knew you were meant to be an entertainer?
Probably before I was even born! My father was a talented blues musician so even in the womb I was exposed to amazing music. Its in my blood, I was just destined to be in entertainment one way or another. I started performing with my dad when I was only 3 years old and after that there was just no going back! I wanted to be a lawyer for a while, which is actually what I went to college for, but I realized I’d rather be the movie version of a lawyer than an actual attorney! LOL So if I can play one in the future I’ve already done lots of research!

Your Idol?
My personal idol is my mother! She’s the most amazing, selfless person I’ve ever known. Professionally in entertainment would it be completely cliche to say Oprah? I adore her for all that she’s accomplished and the fact that she’s still herself at the end of the day. Its so hard to stay true to yourself in this business and she’s done an amazing job of that. On the music side I’d have to go with Christina Aguilera, another strong and excessively talented woman who is determined to be exactly who she is no matter what. I admire that in any woman who has that down pat!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hmmm… Grammy winner… Oscar winner! Either one of those would be nice! In all reality though I’d just like to be as successful as I can possibly be in my field. Whether its in film or in music I’d truly like to be someone that people can relate to and feel empowered by. Especially young women these days. If I can get one young girl to understand that she can be exactly who she is and its a beautiful thing then I’ll be happy!

Favorite designer/store to shop at?
I’m completely addicted to BCBG… they don’t have a plus line, but I can usually fit a large in their dresses and jackets. They make the most impecable clothes! I’m also a complete fashion junky for IGIGI, Michael by Michael Kors, Yves Saint Laurent heels, and Dominique Auxilly for specialty tour and music video looks! Absolutely to die for! By now you can probably tell that I can’t pick just one anything! LOL

The one quote that defines you/how you look at life?
You can most often hear me saying “Live the life you imagine… anything is possible” – I tweet it, Facebook it and say it to myself as a reminder every day that I’m living proof that you can be and do whatever you dream of in this world. You just have to have faith and work hard at it. Most people stop at faith and don’t put the work in. Its a combined effort I think, you’ve gotta do both! And with that truly all things are possible. We’re all living the reality we created for ourselves in one way or another… so might as well create the very best version of it possible!

DEETS:
Size? 14/16
Age? 26
Hometown? A true southern belle from Austin, TX!

Thank you Giselle for answering my questions and hope you ladies get to know her and draw some inspiration as well. Life is short – go get your dream baby! - Skorch Magazine

"Giselle Grayson: Singer, songwriter and actress"

West Coast-based artist Giselle Grayson has opened tours for T.I., Young Jeezy, Lloyd, Sean Paul and Bobby V. Read what the performer has to say about her craft.

Do you most often actively seek inspiration or does it find you? Or is there a combination of the two?
Inspiration always finds me. I’m usually driving in the car, where my mind is free to wander, when a song hits me. And, most of my music comes to me all at once, as in a whole song … those are always the best tracks. When I sit down, an entire song pours out as if it already existed in the universe.

What led you to art in general and to your art form(s) in particular?
I was raised in and around the music industry. My father is a Blues musician; I grew up surrounded by great music. It is most certainly a part of my genes and my soul. There was never any other option.

Have you and your artistry ever been involved in traditional business? If so, how?
Absolutely. At the end of the day it is a business; I am a brand. At the end of the day the music I make, the albums, the singles, they are all products to be sold. And in order to do that, you have to be a business-minded person, and have strong business people around you. I have an amazing team of people behind me.

In addition to mastering their art, what other skill sets to you recommend that artists develop if they want to be successful?
Well, that goes strongly with the business side. Develop your business knowledge and develop your brand. I am obsessed with branding; it’s the thing that sets you apart so that people will be inclined to listen to your music. Learn the business inside and out. A hot track or talent doesn’t equal success. It’s a lot of hard work. Be ready to work for your dream.

How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?

I try to stay in the loop of what’s commercial. I don’t want to sound like anyone else or create music that already exists. I think that balance helps me stay fresh and current. I’m also always reinventing myself. I like to try new looks – new producers, new sounds. It’s really all about challenging your self to grow. If you’re always growing, you’re always going to be relevant.

Do you think that there are widely held misconceptions about art and/or artists? If so, what are they and how do you work to dispel them?

Yes! Absolutely! I think a lot of people think its “easy” to do what a singer-songwriter does. Or that its not hard work. I work harder at this than I have at any other job I’ve ever held. Partly because I love it and mostly because it is required of me in order to succeed. My workday is endless and I love it. It’s a lot more than “standing on stage and singing;” there is a whole world of work that goes into creating those perfect moments on stage.

How do you map out your goals? How do you measure your success?

Once I set my mind to something, I just go and do it. I research it, learn it inside and out, and from there I’m better equipped to navigate my way to success. I think that if I’m able to reach people, no matter the number, on a level that touches them in some way through my music, then that is success.

Who do you consider to be your peers in your field? Who do you see/use as examples for you to emulate?

I’m not a fan of emulation. I think its great to aspire to be the best you can possibly be and for that reason I am often compared to some of the greatest singers of our time. And I am continually blessed and humbled when compared to Christina Aguilera, Adele, and Beyoncé. What a blessing to know that my talent speaks to people in a way that they reach for those names by comparison. I am truly grateful and blessed.

Name two of your top role models: one in the art world and one from outside of it.
I’m a huge fan of the work Christina Aguilera does. She is an artist first and foremost and to her it’s not about selling records, as much as it is about creating the music that is in her soul. To her credit, it’s the most authentic thing she can offer her fans; and I think that’s exceptional.

Secondly, although not a singer, I am like most people a huge admirer of Oprah. She is truly the very definition of conquering obstacles to live a truly full and meaningful life.

Also, my mother is my greatest role model. I am always proud to say I am my mother’s daughter. She has overcome some of the greatest hardships any one person could face, and she is still laughing, smiling, and creating joy all around her. The greatest lessons in life, I have learned from my mother.

Name three books, works, performances or exhibits that changed how you view life and/or yourself.
One of the best gifts I ever received was a book called The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn, it’s a collection of teachings by the bestselling inspirational author. It was a gift from one of my closest friends and it truly changed my thought process on life and how we navigate through it. It’s a wonderful book that truly strengthened my spirituality, my choices, and my relationship with God.
When I was in high school, I saw a concert with Christina Aguilera and Destiny’s Child and man that was a phenomenal experience to have – powerhouse singers doing what they were born to do. That truly inspired me to pursue singing on a commercial level. At the time, I was performing in musical theater, and studying classical music and Opera.

Why do you consider continued learning important?

I am a student of life. I think the minute we stop learning we stop growing. Soak up as much information as you can. I went to college to study political science and now I’m getting my degree in music business. I am obsessed with knowledge and the power that it has to change and shape your life.

What affirmations do you repeat to yourself that contribute to your success?

I don’t believe in negative self-talk. I try to keep everything that’s going on in terms of conversation with myself positive. And I think that truly helps. I’m a cheerleader for my dreams, and myself and I think that’s a great thing. My favorite motto is “Live the life you imagined, all things are possible.” I believe it 100 percent.

What role does art have in the community? What role would you like to see art play in the community?

Art is a huge part of the community and it always should be. It breaks my heart to know that we’re cutting arts programs in schools. Many of the greatest leaders and thinkers to ever walk the earth were students of the arts, rather than traditional academia. I hope to see more parents investing in the arts for their children. It enriches your life, and creates an outlet that you wouldn’t otherwise have, and I think that is endlessly valuable.

What role does technology play in your day-to-day life? How do you utilize it?

Technology is huge. I own a graphic design company, another passion of mine, so I am always either on the phone or the computer, sometimes both. I have two laptops always open on my desk and I am just a technology junkie. With that being said, I believe in having a no-tech day to get back to the basics and be connected with the people around you. No phones at dinner or at the park, etc. As an entertainer, social media is a huge part of my career, so I’m involved in it whether I like it or not, and most of the time it’s a great way to connect with my fans and find out what they want to hear.

Please define your personal brand.

I am a singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, actress, and overall lover of the arts. My brand reflects the duality in women. I’m strong, but I’m sensitive, I’m edgy, but I’m also sweet. I think it’s important to know that we are not just one thing, but shades of many different things.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?
It’s anywhere tropical where I can totally disconnect from technology and just be with the water. I’m a Pisces and we love our water and nature; I commune with God and the earth and all the things that we take for granted in the midst of our busy lives. Anytime I can play in the ocean or in the sand, I’m a happy girl.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

Kindness. I think we are in need of great kindness. I see so many people who are mean to the people they love, and probably worse to strangers. As a society, we tend to walk past the needy, as if they don’t exist. Don’t get me wrong. There are so many people doing wonderful things. But, I think overall we are in need of kindness.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Balance. I am always searching for balance in every area of my life. I tend to be a workaholic, and I work really hard now to balance that out with friends and family time, and just really enjoying being young.

What does it take to be iconic? In your estimation, who has achieved that status?

I think an icon is someone who stands the test of not only time but the industry in general and remains themselves. I think there are several great icons, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Midler, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Christina Aguilera, and Adele. Fans, and people in general, want something real. And I think it’s hard to maintain your realness in this industry but if you can do that while creating great music, then you’re headed in the right direction. - Rolling Out Magazine
