"Give Away The Plot debut examines apocalypse"

By MARY STEGMEIR, Courier Staff Writer

WATERLOO --- Instead of cobbling together an EP or demo disc of concert classics, Waterloo's "Give Away The Plot" wanted to create something special with their first release.

So the progressive rockers crafted "The Ecliptic," a concept album about the end of the world.

"We wanted to do an actual piece of art to legitimize what we were doing," said GATP front man Andy Ferris. "And that's our plan down the road, to keep making CDs."

The 10-track disc tells the story of a deadly star rushing toward the world, and examines the reactions of earth's inhabitants to the impending apocalypse.

"It involves a woman that basically has nothing in life who finds out that she's pregnant, and at the same time finds out that it's the end of the world," said drummer Jake Nichols. "It's kind of about the happiness, but the sadness that everything is going to cease to exist here pretty soon."

Although the album's twists and turns can leave the listener a tad bit confused, several of the songs pack a punch. The album's intro, "Eyes to the Sky," sets the mood perfectly with sorrowful guitar chords playing as Ferris sings: "Looking up at the stars now no one around for miles / There is nothing set between us at all."

Another notable track is "Nostalgia," enhanced by skillful guitar interludes. Most of the songs on "The Ecliptic" succeed in supporting the album's overall theme. And although some of the tunes tread out tired Armageddon language, GATP succeeded in producing something fresh with "The Ecliptic."

The band, whose music often ventures into the experimental rock genre, formed in 2006 and has played shows at The Reverb and The Hub in Cedar Falls. This summer the group hopes to organize a Midwest tour to bring their sound to more listeners.

Give Away The Plot's debut album was produced under Brown Coat Recordings, a Waterloo-based indie music label formed by keyboardist Ethan Cote in October.

"Their talents all worked out very well together," Cote said of the musicians in the band. "Their sound was very mature and very marketable."

"The Ecliptic" is on sale at Bob's Guitars and West Music in Cedar Falls. Copies of the disc can also be purchased on the band's MySpace page.

"It's a really good album," Cote said. "It's deep, especially if you listen to it all in one sitting." - Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier

Bio

Formed in 2006, Give Away The Plot's entire aim was to take all the elements they loved about music, and from that put their own unique stamp on it. Soft, Loud. Day and night, with each painting a picture. The bands founding line-up of Andy Ferris (vox/guitar), Shawn Hoffman (guitar), Jake Nichols (drums), also joined by former member Seth McDuffee(bass/vocals) came together to write what is now their debut album, "The Ecliptic." The disc released on Brown Coat Records, is your traditional "concept album," telling the story of what is the impending doom destined for the planet, artfully delving into the lives and inner delusions that our inhabitants experience through it all. The band now expanding their live shows and sound, enter a new era with current member Audrey Robinson (bass) writing new material, for their upcoming tour.
