Bio

A passion inspired by their respective musical backgrounds; skills honed in the Glengarry melting pot music scene; an against-the-trend, pig-minded approach to playing their self-penned songs in the battle scarred pubs of Eastern Ontario - these are the salty ingredients that spawned what is now an internationally acclaimed alternative-roots band: THE GLENGARRY BHOYS. Described as bold, unorthodox, vibrant, and evocative, the BhoysÕ hybrid of Canadian Highland Scots and French Canadian musical idioms has evolved into a sound that is weighty, authoritative, and extremely entertaining. Their high-energy stage show is not only captivating, it is gripping - aimed at propelling you out of your seat and reeling on your feet!

The Glengarry Bhoys began some eight years and eight albums ago, and have established themselves through a determined work ethic of non-stop touring and recording. They have accomplished much in this relatively short span of time, thrilling audiences internationally and selling in excess of 100,000 copies of their records independently, a sure sign of their appeal and the strength of their craft. The Bhoys have gone through a couple of incarnations, all the while meticulously cultivating their distinctive sound. This now-established line-up was drawn together by sometimes-curious circumstances involving police, championship dancing, near roommates, and the Glengarry Pipe Band. FateÕs interventions are the fhansÕ reward, as The Glengarry Bhoys branch out from the local pub to the world stage.

Graham Wright, the bandÕs charismatic songsmith, never strays far from his native Scottish roots. His heartfelt, inspired songwriting infuses the bandÕs time-honored instrumentation with an edgy contemporary feel. Colleague Ziggy Leroux cut his percussive teeth in championship drum corps such as the Dunvegan Pipe Band and with topnotch ceilidh bands like the Brigadoons. His sophisticated rhythmical palate inexorably assists in building The Glengarry BhoysÕ unique world-beat, danceable groove. Stunning vocals from Wright, Leroux and Miranda Mulholland mix expertly with the fluent piping of Ewan Brown. Add MulhollandÕs virtuoso fiddling, Graham SmithÕs refined bass, and ZiggyÕs thrilling percussion and the guaranteed result is exhilarating crossover success.

The Bhoys have their roots in Glengarry, Ontario, an area settled by Scottish Highlanders in the early 1800Õs, but also home to a strong French element for some 400 years. The two ethnic groups have always lived in close harmony, perhaps originally born of their mutual disdain for the British, but further sparked by their common interest in farming, religion, politics, and music. The inter-marriage of French and Scots has created a unique blend of cultures. This harmony is nowhere more evident than in the music of The Glengarry Bhoys, which draws from the membersÕ combined musical heritages.

The Glengarry Bhoys consistently pay homage to their cultural legacies through the reinterpretation of traditional jigs and reels, which also showcases their strong songwriting skills. The most requested Glengarry Bhoys song is surely ÒMÕen Va a la Fontaine (Zigue Zon),Ó drawn from the tradition of chanson a responder, a call-and-response song similar to traditional Scottish walking songs. It tells the story of a young woman pulled from the water by a nobleman with less-than-noble intentions, who then escapes to preserve herself for true love. Blending tradition with current pop, the BhoysÕ music is stirring and unerringly nuanced Ð always within earshot of the melodic Scottish tradition.

A common observation of those who have been captivated by a Glengarry Bhoys live show is that, clearly, this is a band in love with music and performing. As one promoter was moved to report, ÒIf these Bhoys donÕt get yoÕ a-movinÕ, then your skinÕs on way too tight.Ó Their energy and good humor, as much a part of the show as their musicianship, crosses all cultures and ages. It is not uncommon to see a grandparent and grandchild dancing together in the aisles! Their concerts are both a musical and a visual experience - an uplifting expression of honest and compelling joy.

The Glengarry Bhoys always celebrate home - and knowing where one is from allows for perpetual self-discovery, even while traveling near and far. Theirs is a pastiche of cultural and musical landscapes, drawing inspiration from heritage and folklore, all for reconstruction within a contemporary setting. Their Mill Sessions release is an album that predictably explores tradition and conditions of the heart, but peppered throughout are also lively proclamations of delight that demand nothing more than a willingness to dance.

THE GLENGARRY BHOYS cordially invite you to experience their roots traditions being faithfully carried on, as well as to savor new traditions enthusiastically begun
