"Magazine Review of Innovations"

"Influenced by Kaki King, Preston Reid, and Tommy Emmanuel, acoustic guitar ace Glenn Roth released his debut solo CD, Innovations in [2005]. Fans of animated fingerstyle acoustic guitar will be impressed by Roth's ability to hold sway with sheer virtuosity. In the spirit of Leo Kottke, Glenn Roth demonstrates fine command over the steel string fretboard, combining engaging guitar techniques and a fine improvisational edge. A gifted player on the rise..."

"CD Review of Innovations"

Glenn Roth is a better guitarist than most. This CD consists of solo acoustic guitar songs with no vocals, all of which revolve around creating an atmosphere and then exploring it with a variety of technical tricks, themes and rhythms. I'm not sure how to categorize it... it's not classical or new age or rock--it's just... music. After listening to Innovations all the way through, I suddenly remembered seeing Roth play live at an American Legion show with a bunch of punk bands, and he fit right in even though his genre was light years away from everyone else on the bill; his guitar work was just as flawless live as it is on tape. Fans of instrumental acoustic guitar should most definitely give it a listen.

"PLAYING A LITTLE CATCH-UP"

"Glenn Roth, Busker

Sounds Like: Delicate, accomplished solo acoustic guitar work

Fingerstyle guitarist Glenn Roth is without a doubt a remarkable technical player, but his music is far from avant-garde - there's a warmth to his playing that you simply don't hear on most solo guitar discs.

His second cd, Busker, is an expansive effort, with Eastern-tinged compositions (Poem For Dharma), some classical/folk-type pieces, and hell, even an instrumental acoustic Iron Maiden cover (Run to the Hills, which sounds positively genial in Roth's hands).

Roth was once a fixture in the New York subway system, playing as part of a program called Music Under New York, and the experience was definitely a worthwhile one - you don't win over those kinds of crowds simply by having deft fingers alone. His fluid, melodic fingerpicked style makes compositions like Waterfall sound like an adaptation of some great, forgotten classic rock song; it turns the frenetically-paced Morning Coffee into a joyous hoedown rather than just a display of technical virtuosity.

You can regularly catch Roth live at venues all over the area (and yes, he gives guitar lessons, too), but don't dismiss the album; Busker is an impressive - and more importantly, enjoyable - showcase of his talents.

"CD Review of Innovations"

"GLENN ROTH - The guitar has been his constant companion throughout his life and Connecticut guitarist Glenn Roth takes his dream one step further with the 2005 CD release of Innovations. Influenced by everyone from Van Halen to Tommy Emmanuel and Preston Reid, Roth laid down his electric guitar in favor of his love of acoustic finger style guitar. There’s a strong air of originality running throughout Innovations and Roth tempers his genre-blending mixture of rock, blues, classical, jazz and bluegrass with some masterful guitar-tapping and other effects. The CD is expertly recorded and fans of acoustic masters like Fahey and Kottke will find much to appreciate here. Interestingly, Roth was chosen by the MUNY Program (Musicians Under New York) and you can currently see and hear him performing in the subways under Grand Central & Penn Stations and Rockefeller Center. www.glennroth.com"

"Making a Mix.... Beatnik 400, Jan 30, 2008"

“Ghostrain,” Glenn Roth — We here at Weekend first discovered guitarist Glenn Roth at Beatnik. If we remember correctly, it was episode 250 in October of 2004, but maybe that’s not right? It doesn’t matter, though, because Glenn’s on this list because of his killer fretwork. We chose this song because it’s both exciting and pleasant.

"I picked up your CD on my way to work this morning....the music you were playing had me awestruck. I had to stop and listen...I only wish that the tunes lasted longer. Thank you for sharing your gift. Happy Holidays."

"...while dragging my feet through the underground world of the NYC subway, there was fantastic instrumental guitar music being played amidst the noise of the trains. Initially I thought it was a recording because the sound was flawless... I was wrong. There was something about the song... it had the most amazing chord progression played with both skill and finesse... impossible not to be drawn to it... mesmerizing. You discover new things everyday here in NYC, and I discovered Glenn Roth. My day just got a whole lot better."

Bio

Glenn Roth

Glenn Roth’s constant companion throughout his life has been his guitar, even at the tender age of seven. Since he was a young boy, he has chosen to wrap his life around music; as a young man he studied music and sound recording in addition to jazz and classical guitar. All the while diversifying his future skills by listening and learning from his favorite rock bands and musicians such as 311 and Tool, Trey Anastasio and Eddie Van Halen. Glenn then formed a rock band of his own with his friend Todd Baker, which gained local popularity until their disolution in 2002 when he realized that his real love was the acoustic guitar, after seeing the great Tommy Emmanual perform. He began studying fingerstyle and writing his own music. Since then there has been no turning back for Glenn Roth.

Glenn has become a respected veteran in the music scene, and nearly a household name in much of CT. Roth performs regularly at venues throughout Connecticut New York, and tours all over the country whenever possible. His latest album, "Into the Unknown," describes his view of the future: it's wide open, and he is going where the road takes him, without looking back.

In addition to his numerous solo perfomances, he has shared the stage with and opened for many musical acts, including Don Ross, Antoine DuFour, Erik Mongrain, Tuck and Patti, Twiddle, Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams. When not performing, Glenn gives guitar instruction to young hopefuls out of the Branford, CT music store, “A Sound Choice.”
