"GAC Album Review: Gloriana’s A Thousand Miles Left Behind"

While the title might subtly suggest otherwise, Nashville harmony-trio Gloriana’s sophomore record builds more on an expressive sense of belonging than it does on wanting to leave certain places in the dust. On A Thousand Miles Left Behind, due in stores this week on July 31, Gloriana has never sounded more confident and comfortable than they do inside this 11-song set, full of rich textures and flowing harmonies.

The trio, made up of Rachel Reinert and brothers Tom and Mike Gossin, has no doubt traversed some tricky ground since the release of their 2009 self-titled debut. The group that accepted the 2010 ACM Top New Vocal Group prize was a four-piece. However, original member Cheyenne Kimball departed in Summer 2011. Though this was certainly a setback at the time, the lineup change seems to have actually pushed Gloriana’s music forward and allowed them to play more with guy-girl dynamics in a way similar to Lady Antebellum.

Songs like their current Top 5 single and biggest career hit, “(Kissed You) Goodnight,” as well as the tormented “Can’t Shake You,” display a palpable chemistry as Tom and Rachel each portray roles in a relationship. The former, a song about seizing the moment punctuated with a dramatic chorus, capitalizes on these elements as each takes a side before harmonizing in the chorus, Now that I’ve kissed you, it’s a good night. The steamy “Sunset Lovin’” follows suit, playing off of modern bluegrass riffs while the different voices give life to the story through a melodic, lyrical conversation.

Working again with Producer Matt Serletic, Gloriana co-wrote every song on the project. And while the radio singles have sometimes leaned toward powerful choruses and pounding drums, 2009’s “Wild At Heart” comes to mind, Gloriana truly shines with their softer, earthier sounds. “Where My Heart Belongs,” building off Rachel’s lead, develops over reflective lyrics and pondering acoustic notes while the nostalgic theme is born in the gentle details of lemonade stands and falling stars. The sense of belonging is strong here, as it is on the beautiful “Carolina Rose.”

One of the album’s finest works, Tom eases into each turn of the vocal melody on “Carolina Rose” with a warm rasp that recalls shades of Americana / Alt-Country artists like Steve Earle and Ryan Adams. It don’t mean a thing without my Carolina Rose, he sings on the road weary tune over a warm bed of acoustic guitars, mandolin and light harmonica. Album opener “Gold Rush” also reflects this sentiment, combining acoustic creek-side riffing with an electric chorus and the lines, I know that everything I need is in your eyes. And on the youthful anthem “Doin’ It Our Way,” things get literal through the sing-along chorus with the call, Take me out where the fields don’t end/Where I belong with me and my friends.

On A Thousand Miles Left Behind, Gloriana offers a postcard of where they are in their lives and at this stage in their career. Even the uplifting “Turn My World Around” is about the optimistic place achieved through love rather than the dark place the song begins. A sense of belonging and place are central to this snapshot, and on their new release, Gloriana shows that it can sometimes be about the destination as well as the journey.

Key Tracks – “(Kissed You) Goodnight,” “Carolina Rose,” “Where My Heart Belongs,” “Can’t Shake You” - GAC (Great American Country)

"A Thousand Miles Left Behind by Gloriana"

Since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2009, Gloriana has made some changes, including going from four members to three. The loss of one voice hasn’t hurt them, though. In fact, their sound on A Thousand Miles Left Behind is tight and uncluttered.

Another change is that band members Tom and Mike Gossin and Rachel Reinert had a hand in writing all of the tracks on the new album, giving it a youthful energy that translates nicely live. It also gives listeners an intimate glimpse into their relationships.

Tom honors his future bride with “Carolina Rose,” while Rachel offers an angelic ode to home in “Where My Heart Belongs.” There’s also a toe-tappin’ invitation to romance in “Sunset Lovin’” and heartbreaking angst in “Can’t Shake You.”

The band has already released two standout tracks with “(Kissed You) Good Night” and “Wanna Take You Home,” but A Thousand Miles Left Behind sounds like the start of an amazing journey. - Country Weekly

"Interview with Tom Gossin from the country group Gloriana"

Country group Gloriana has done extremely well over the last few years. Their sophomore studio album “A Thousand Miles Left Behind” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Album charts, as well as No. 10 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts.
Gloriana is comprised of Rachel Reinert, as well as brothers Tom and Mike Gossin. Tom from the group took some time from their busy schedule to talk about their music and their successes.
They were named “Top New Vocal Group” of 2010 by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and in 2009, they were honored with the “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” award at the 2009 American Music Awards (AMAs), where they bested out Lady Gaga. “That was our second album and it is always the hump to get over in a musician’s career. We wrote all of the songs on there and it was a very personal album for us since it tells our stories over the past two years and it coincides with a specific era of our lives,” he said. “Winning the AMA award was probably our craziest moment as a band so far, especially since Lady Gaga is such a huge star.”
Tom added, “It was definitely an honor to be recognized by the Academy of Country Music since that’s our genre and the people that we most want to impress. That was really special. We actually received the award while standing onstage at the Grand Ole Opry, which was really cool, so that was an awesome moment.”
Their latest single “Can’t Shake You” reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts. It is about not being able to “shake” the memory of a past romance. “That felt great since it was technically our third single release from our latest album,” Tom said. “I actually wrote it about my own situation. I am actually getting married in October and my fiancé and I had an on and off relationship over the last ten years. The song was released in the off-time and I knew that it was meant to be with her since I could not ‘shake her.’ I realized that I wanted her in my life since everything reminded me of her.”
His personal favorite song on the album is “Carolina Rose,” which also dealt with his fiancé. “It’s the story of us getting back together so that was really special to me,” he said.
The single “(Kissed You) Good Night” is their most successful to date, since it has been certified platinum and it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts; moreover, it was the most played country single by a group in 2012. “I wrote that song with Josh Kear and it came together so easily. I had the idea for the song and we were done with it in approximately two hours,” he said. “At the end of the day we are glad that the people connected with the song.”
The group is out on the road playing headlining shows across America. “We have been touring consistently since 2009. Our first tour was with Taylor Swift and we haven’t stopped since. It has been a wild ride for us and we have gotten used to living on the road. This lifestyle is the norm for us and we had hoped for this our whole lives as kids,” he said.
He listed Vince Gill as his dream duet choice and dubbed him as an “amazing musician.” “Vince paved the way for so many artists and he is such a great songwriter. I call him the ‘King of Natural.’ It would be a real honor to do a song with him,” he said.

Bio

From the band’s earliest days, the members of Gloriana have always known that good things take time. The country trio first came together in 2008 when brothers Tom and Mike Gossin moved into Rachel Reinert’s Nashville apartment. Together they spent months in cramped quarters, surviving on Ramen Noodles while trying to shape their sound. “Gloriana are three people who have played music for their entire lives,” says Mike. “But we never really caught a break until coming together. Tom and I played in bars for 10 years, but it wasn’t until the three of us got together that we knew we had something special.”

That something special has held Tom, Mike, and Rachel together through all manner of personal and professional struggles over the past several years: from relationship upheavals, to the departure of band-mate Cheyenne Kimball, to long stretches away from loved ones on the road, to wondering whether their music would ever catch fire. Fortunately it did when Gloriana’s 2009 self-titled debut album soared to No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart propelled by the gold-certified single “Wild At Heart”. That same year, they spent two years on the road with Taylor Swift and won both an American Music Award for Breakthrough Artist and a coveted ACM Award for Top New Vocal Group in 2010.

It’s been a minute since that heady time, but the wait has been worth it. The band’s first single “(Kissed You) Good Night”, from A Thousand Miles Left Behind, achieved several career milestones for Gloriana. It was the fastest-rising single of their career, Certified GOLD by the R.I.A.A., and is the #5 most played song on Country Radio for 2012. There is no question that their new music marks the beginning of a new chapter in the group’s creative evolution - a willingness and confidence to write songs taken from personal experience and introspection.

Gloriana released their new single “Can’t Shake You” and it has quickly become a standout track from A Thousand Miles Left Behind with fans routinely commenting on how relatable the song is for the struggles to move on after a break up. “Can’t Shake You,” written by Tom Gossin, Stephanie Bentley, and James Slater, is currently climbing the charts, with the accompanying video in rotation at both CMT and GAC.

”A Thousand Miles Left Behind literally and figuratively describes our lives over the past three years,” Tom explains. “It's also a testament to how we're constantly learning and growing with every experience on the road, because this album is really about just that — growth.”

The album, their second produced by Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Matt Serletic, is Gloriana’s most personally revealing and emotionally resonant work to date, relaying their hopes, dreams, disappointments, and triumphs against a richly textured country backdrop. The band members co-wrote every song, often collaborating with Serletic (who has worked with Willie Nelson, The Band Perry, and Matchbox Twenty) as well as several of Nashville’s finest composers, including Josh Kear (Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum), Hillary Lindsey (Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride), Tommy Lee James (Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood), Stephanie Bentley (Faith Hill, Martina McBride), and Wendell Mobley (Rascal Flatts, Kenny Chesney).

The result is an engaging mix of up-tempo, good-time numbers (“Wanna Take You Home,” “Sunset Lovin’,” “Go On…Miss Me,” “Doin’ It Our Way”) and graceful, heartfelt songs (current Top 20 single “(Kissed You) Good Night,” “Can’t Shake You,” “Turn My World Around,” “Carolina Rose,” “Soldier Song”) that showcase Gloriana’s signature harmonies, as well as their ear for irresistible melodies and undeniable knack for story-telling. Tom’s songs tend to deal with the allure of fame (“Gold Rush”) and how his wandering lifestyle has impacted his relationship (“Carolina Rose” and “Can’t Shake You”). “A lot of the songs on the album are written from the point of view of the person I would like to be,” he says. “’Like on ‘(Kissed You) Good Night,’ my alter ego comes in and does what I’m afraid to do in real life. It’s ultimately a song about not ending up with regrets because the worst thing is to look back on something and think, ‘I wish I had done things differently.’”

Mike found himself digging deepest emotionally on “Turn My World Around,” where he sketches out one of the darkest times in his life. “Before Gloriana, I was living in North Carolina and I was broke,” he says. “I didn't have a car. I was sleeping on my brother’s couch. I was in a rut thinking, ‘Is anything ever going to happen?’ The song is about meeting somebody who pulled me out of that bad place and saved me.” Rachel’s most personal moment “Where My Heart Belongs”, closes out the album with her happy memories of growing up in Georgia. “I wanted to reflect on that carefree childhood vibe and how circumstances change as we grow older,” she says. “My parents have since split up and everyone has moved
