"C'est Sharp" EP; all songs from EP available streaming on

One of the benefits of inventing your own pop-music genre is that your band is immediately its greatest practitioner. Fortunately for Portland, Oregon’s Gnomenclature, they’re not only the world’s first and greatest Afro-twee band, as the debut EP C’est Sharp proves, they’re also just plain great.
Gnomenclature didn’t come up with the word “afro-twee” – but only because they’d spent all their loose pun change on the band name. But if you can imagine a world in which Glasgow popsters like Orange Juice or Belle & Sebastian picked up Tony Allen and Fela’s intricate rhythms for their bittersweet, lovelorn tunes, and you’ve got your Garmin tuned right. Sample-like trebly guitars and funky-drummer kit in dogged pursuit of lackadaisical, sunshine-melancholy bells and twee-cheese organ, all crowned by Alexandra Richardson’s sweet, neo-folky voice.
With afrobeat continuing to rein supreme as “world’s hippest music,” and the world beyond Kelvingrove Park beginning to understand the glory of the Postcard Records sound, Gnomenclature seems poised to help make Portland, 2010, a bit like Olympia, 1990.
