"Chester vs. Elbo Room"

Featured on New Music Binge, SouthSide finally had the chance to review this eclectic rock band. Chester was hard to define because it incorporated a unique blending of genres in its music. And that wasn’t a bad thing in this reviewer’s book. Add rip-roarin’ guitar riffs, pounding percussion rhythms and Jordan, SouthSide knew she’s was going to have a fun time. Throughout their set, she heard lyrical rap with metal rock to emo with a haunting creepiness and head-banging metal with raw angst. A variety like that truly kept the audience on its listening toes never knowing what to expect next from Chester. Their opening song, Soma, fused lyrical verse of rap with some screamin’ angst and metal sound. Not quite seen together but with front man, Jordan, on vocals, this band pulled it off nicely.

SouthSide enjoyed My Imagination because of its creepy journey inside a mind full of dark secrets and desires. Warning, it wasn’t a pretty thing to hear either. Tranquilicious had this strange metal rhythm woven into a rock ballad. Yes, Fearless fans, this reviewer said strange and ballad …still not a bad thing. Though taking a slower tempo than the others, this song had that punch of head-banging metal and angst. By now, Chester’s energetic insanity and antics on stage became contagious reaching the audience. Meanwhile, Wake Up took a more upbeat rhythm as the insanity continued. They took us Home with one heck of a send-off which left the fans wanting more of Chester. Whew, what a performance, Fearless fans. SouthSide highly recommends Fearless and metalhead fans checking out this band whenever they perform again. "Chester- Tranquilicious, Wake Up"

A mix of heavily distorted and wah wah flavored guitars along with a rock-picked bassline and vocals and lyrics simliar Edward Kowalczyk (of Live) create a sound not unlike Velvet Revolver. This is Chester. They play rock music, not screamo, not hardcore, just straight up, whiskey with ice and a splash of water, mid 90’s alternative rock. The slow stomping, electrified rhythms surely propel their audiences into a jumping and fist pumping frenzy at their live show - and having played more than their fair share of shows at the dingy Elbo Room, I don’t deny it. The vocals and the lead guitar usually follow one another, snaking around the song, really belting when appropriate and shutting down where appropriate as well. The recordings are really good quality and the band is tight together, which is more than can be said for ALOT of the rock bands out there these days. Although there are some political overtones (Wake Up) , the message does not disrupt the music and you are never overpowered by the heaviness of the lyrics.

If you are ready to pump the volume up and start elevating that blood pressure a little, stop by one of Chester’s shows and bounce off a few bodies. - http://jptros.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/chester-tranquilicious-wake-up/

"Chester @ Abbey Pub w/ Skindred"

"They play original heavy rock with a style that reminds me a lot of early 1970s Black Sabbath. In fact, it almost hits me as a kind of fusion between Sabbath and White Zombie where it has a certain 70s vibe with a modern feel to it...Lead vocalist Jordan has a good powerful voice that cut right thru the mix and fit just right with their style of music. The guitars were pretty good and very much in-sync with one another. Rhythm guitarist Tim was tight and had a few solo breaks. Lead guitarist Simon, did a very good job in playing the songs while showcasing his skills with some nice and tasteful solos which I was not expecting at all and really added a different element to the songs." - Chicagosrock.com

Bio

Chester is the amalgamated persona of five unlikely anti-heroes who were cruelly chosen by fate to be living proof that you can be legally retarded yet still follow your dreams.

Band interests include: rock music, hot chicks, alcohol, dream interpretation, celebrity deaths, mind alteration, advanced trigonometry, stupid movies, dogs, Ernest Hemingway, meat, time travel, smoking and porn.

Chester is made up of Jordan on vocals, Timmy and Simon on guitar, and Cory on bass. Their influences vary widely from the Deftones to Del the Funky Homosapien, from Bungle to Blind Guardian, from Prince to Prodigy, and so on. Having been active in the local scene for over two years, Chester has already made their presence known at such notable local hot spots as the Double Door, Subterranean, The Rave in Milwaukee, Otto's main-stage in DeKalb, and has opened and run extensive promotions for national and international acts such as Skindred (UK), Sound of Urchin, and Outernational, fresh off of their recording sessions with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine.

Chester has earned a reputation for standing out in the local scene due to their creativity and style. Most people who come away from a Chester show comment on the on-stage energy, sense of humor, and freshness of the musical style. With such varied interests in mind, Chester writes specifically for what they would want to hear at a rock show, and not to fit into any specific musical genre or tight jeans. Wearing their hair long and dirty rather than neat or swooped over, Chester defies the mold and takes people back to a time when rock was dark, dirty, sexy and spiritual. The dual guitars will at times meld together to form a deep, gutteral rumble, and then spontaneously explode into melodic harmonies reminiscent of what you'd expect Randy Rhodes to sound like if he had jammed with Zack Wylde. The vocals are at time aggressive and snarling and then melodic and harmonious, while the lyrics are thought-provoking and poetic while still maintaining a down to earth delivery. Meanwhile the bass and drums intertwine and drive the machine through the gates of hell or into your mom's purse to steal her Ambien.

Chester is not an experience to pass up. Reviewers from the far corners of the Earth (Chicagoland) have been building more and more hype around this band and things seem to be getting bigger and better for them every day. Chester looks forward to making 2010 their most successful year yet and to spreading their weirdness as far beyond their hometown as the angry hordes of villagers will let them.
