"Featured Music"

Formed in the spring of 2007, Gold & Glass have already earned a notable reputation for eclectic music and great shows at venues across New Orleans. This quartet’s sound moves from country to ’50s-esque ballads and melds everything from classic and southern rock to indie rock to form their unique sound. They’re led by John Dobry, a familiar face at many local venues and professor of jazz and music composition at Tulane University (and even composed music for the Bolivian movie Dependicia Sexual), whose guitar allows them a very broad range of music. It’s not surprising the band has superior chemistry, as Sam Houston, whose lyrics are often inspired by the psychotic, and bassist/mandolin player Nathanael Sprague’s are in their third band together. Sprague’s had many different music projects in New Orleans since 2002, and Sam Houston, who grew up in New Orleans, left his visual arts career to write and sing. Gold & Glass is capped off by Guy Johnston, claimed by their press kit to be from Mars and to have been playing drums for nineteen years. Their song “The Barnum Effect” gives them an almost “Blitzkrieg Bop” sound. Complete with bouncing guitar riffs and a rising and falling bass line, this song will definitely get you up and on your feet at shows. However, there can be a shift, as evidenced with the much darker song “Big Bad Wolf.” We get a bit of teasing from drummer Johnston in the beginning of “Wolf,” with a short, upbeat intro that’s immediately added to a lonely and regretful sound of a guitar’s rough chords, which then becomes a high-pitched picking that matches the bass. Houston’s voice and lyrics blend this ballad into a distinct dark sound. Check out their EP, Be Still, Villan, released this month with album art done by local artist and teacher Niki Page. Bio

Formed in the spring of 2007, Gold & Glass is a 4-piece rock band based in New Orleans, LA. Their sound is like The Boss co-writing with Tom Petty for Morrissey singing with Foreigner - a kind of rock & roll reminiscent of the music coming through that little radio in your dad's garage while he worked on the IROC-Z that he was never quite able to fix up. Their shows feature a growing arsenal of original songs augmented with a wide-ranging selection of covers. Their lyrics are clever, competent, and sophisticated, yet their sound is highly accessible to the average music listener. They cut their teeth playing house parties but have been increasingly playing local New Orleans venues. Their growing reputation for entertaining and engaging live shows has given them a loyal following, and the band looks forward to honing their live act at every opportunity. www.myspace.com/goldandglass
