"Review of Songs For Porches, Vol. 1"

Sure to be one of Houston’s biggest standouts of 2010, Golden Arrow Holy Face’s forlorn acoustic country brings to mind at once the simplicity of Townes Van Zandt and the low poetic rumble of Leonard Cohen. With 2009’s free album download,Songs For Porches Vol. 1, GAHF’s David Feil has upped the Houston singer-songwriter game and hit a home run of a debut. This show should be just the thing to pull us out of our post-SXSW audio funk. - Houston Press

Bio

Golden Arrow Holy Face is a one-man project, but it's a labor born of friendship and camaraderie. Self-described as "porch music," these songs look back toward the days when friends sat together and played music for one another, singing of their homes and of faraway places, of love and of solitude. David Feil came to songwriting not from any technical training, but from the improvised and spontaneous joy of making music with other people. Over the years he has honed a unique talent for matching words to simple melodies and has developed a finger-picking style and vocal presence reminiscent of the early days of the American folk tradition. Under the guise of Golden Arrow Holy Face, Feil's recordings are a blend of his matured sensibility as a lyricist and the child-like wonder with which he approaches new instruments and sounds as an amateur multi-instrumentalist. A fan of all aspects of the American tradition, he gathers his influences from pre-WWII folk, country, and gospel, the 60's and 70's avant-garde, and the world around us.
