BandAlternativeRock

Perth alternative rockers Gombo are an outfit on the rise. Freshly armed with release Next Trick this 3 piece are rewriting the rule book on momentum gained.

Biography

Theres absolutely no need for smoke and mirrors around Gombo to try and maximise their mainstream appeal, because thats absolutely not what theyre going for. This is not music for the passive listener who just wants pop choruses as background noise while theyre at work... this is music to snap you to full attention and bring your brain to orgasm.

So its a thinky thing Gombo have going on: clever and tech like Mr Bungle, heavy yet weightless like Tool, and playful and weird like Ween... music fastidiously written to challenge its players and their audience alike.

Debuting with Next Trick, Gombos introduction to the world is part laboratory / part garage - science and art colliding in lascivious ways.

And while it is quite pointless trying to explain adventurous or unpredictable music in words, Next Tricks lyrical mentions of pulling a rabbit out of nowhere are fittingly descriptive of Gombos musical sleight-of-hand. Trickery abounds as the song scurries through a twisting and turning rabbit hole racing towards an uncertain end.

Which is a fun place to start.

And Gombo really are just getting started. Based in Western Australia, the band is in the middle of nowhere, beating a new path to somewhere.

For themselves and for people that like their music, Next Trick is Gombo testing the infinite waters of possibility. And it can only get stranger from here...

- October and December 2010 Gombo also performed on Foxtel's television show the Couch on two separate occasions

- November 2010 the Perth release of 'Pour Money At Your Feet' was received by Drum Medias Simon Holland as a Rip roaring performance of what must be one of Perths shining lights of potential

Lyrics

Moneytree

Written By: Ryan Dillon, Paul Southern

Was there a problem with finances, too unstable no degree in life?
Let’s sell the rock, the dog and the home. Jump on the next plane and fly

Your story has no end, no beginning anyway
Will the truth be brought up in time?
You’re stalling while I mend this open wound every day
Medication would’ve been nice

She needs some water to wet her mouth
Spread her roots to another town
But a new monkey swings from that tree
Why don’t we pour money at her feet and watch her grow

Was there a problem with all my scars, too impossible I couldn’t hide?
Got enough baggage under your eyes, grab the next fuckin clown in line

Your story has no end, no beginning anyway
Will the truth be brought up in time?
You’re stalling while I mend this open wound every day
Medication would’ve been nice

She needs some water to wet her mouth
Spread her roots to another town
But a new monkey swings from that tree
Why don’t we pour money at her feet?

Don’t pray for me when I’m stuck here needing surgery
Sounds hypocritical but that wasn’t part of my statergy

It’s about time I handed in my resignation
Second guessing gave her a better life
All the indications are pointing toward my frustration
With the pen in my hand, sign the dotted line

Grow, pour money at your feet and watch yourself
Grow, pour money at your feet and watch yourself
Pull it hard enough and it might just blow!

Surely by now you’re getting used to the called happiness
Unfamiliar territory? Ya better get your tom tom out
Misguided directions will always be the fall of you
You’re so reliable

You know what it’s like to feel this overcome you
Let go of the wheel let fate drive you
In this state of confusion put ya foot down
Tighten your seatbelt and say goodbye to your balls

Surely by now you’re gatting used to the thing called ugliness
Mirror mirror on the fuckin wall tell me again how to fix it all
You’re under control now sally
I guess you better slam ya leadfoot down

You know what it’s like to feel this overcome you
Let go of the wheel let fate drive you
In this state of confusion put ya foot down
Tighten your seatbelt and say goodbye to your balls

Is there any room today for hope that’s bringin me down?
All will I have to fight for another reason?

You know what it’s like to feel this overcome you
Let go of the wheel let fate drive you
In this state of confusion put ya foot down
Tighten your seatbelt and say goodbye to your balls

Istanbul Sunset

Written By: Ryan Dillon

Surrounded by zombies late on a Thursday in a car park, I got a taste
It’s when I first witnessed that rare smile lit up her face, and I’d like it back

I could feel the temperature
From those eyes the moment I met her
A pleasant surprise cos first she didn’t walk
But soon realized, this guy got no fuckin point

Emails and photos of down south holidays uploaded, I look at em every night
It’s never enough though cos I don’t feel the warmth or get a view of Istanbul’s sunset

I could feel the temperature
From those eyes the moment I met her
A pleasant surprise cos first she didn’t walk
But soon realized, this guy’s got no fuckin point
Don’t think I ever will

I can’t give you happiness
I won’t put your kids on a bus
I’ll never afford a 3 story home
So I’ll write you a melody that’s hopefully happy enough

Is this happy enough?
Is this happy enough for you? FUCK YEAH!
Is this happy enough?
Is this happy enough for you? FUCK YEAH!

Then on Saturday after a drawn game of ten pin bowls, I got the final taste
Flavour still remains, our palms like magnets as she walks away
And I’d like it back, just want another view of Istanbul’s sunset

I could feel the temperature
From those eyes the moment I met her
A pleasant surprise cos first she didn’t walk
But soon realized…
