"TVD Recommends Goodnight Lights"

Philadelphia’s noisy Arcade Fire meets Pavement combo returns for their first show of the new year.

Goodnight Lights came to be in 2007 when the quintet began writing songs that would become their first album. Since then, they have self-released three full length albums and one live album. Each record was produced by the band themselves, and the band has had a hand in recording each release as well.

Starting off the new year with the release of their live record Say What You Want, Goodnight Lights have continued their momentum by getting back into the studio. The group will be working on the follow up to 2012's studio album, As Far As The Moon.

Tonight Goodnight Lights take a break from their recording schedule to play their first show of 2013 as they make their way to Kung Fu Necktie. Known for their clever songwriting that nods to the ’90s alternative scene as well as their well-worked vocal harmonies, Goodnight Lights have also been building a reputation as one of Philadelphia’ loudest live bands.

Joining them on stage will be Austin, TX’s Tiger Waves and Reading, PA’s You You Dark Forest. Things kick off at 8PM and tickets are only $8.

Kung Fu Necktie is located at 1250 North Front Street in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. - The Vinyl District

"Review: Goodnight Lights - Electric Spark"

This Philadelphia/New Jersey based band pretty much hijacked my brain and held it hostage for about an hour. Every element in Goodnight Lights comes together with such a sincere force; I felt like I was waiting for this album to come along, like some of my favorite bands were finally smashed together in one. Perhaps the feeling of anticipation was loaded in a familiar sound with a twist... I couldn't put my finger directly on it, but I knew I liked it. The influences of this band are inadvertently represented in the tracks on the album. Some of those influences include The Velvet Underground, The Pixies, The Stooges, Radiohead and The Arcade Fire. Goodnight Lights concocts a sound that channels these influences in a versatile yet original way. Innovative.

It is clear that these people know their shit. And perform their shit well. There is a consistent talent in each member that exudes through each instrument played. So who are these people? Goodnight Lights includes Michael Schraeger (Guitar, Vocals), Jonah Delso (Bass, Vocals), Michael Ziegler (Drums, Hand Percussion) and the sibling dynamic of Faith Charlton (Keyboards, Vocals) and Ian Charlton (Guitar, Vocals). And yes, you read that correctly, 4 out of 5 members of this band, sings.

The contribution of integrated vocals simply adds to the raw power of grunge-rhythmic riffs, eerie leads, ass shaking bass lines, lingering melodies and harmonies with seductive keys throughout. Behind all this sexiness is meticulous banging... (eh hem) I mean, percussion.

Goodnight Lights

The opening track on the album "Deeper Down" immediately sucks you into a story. The kind of story you want to hear all the way through. So not only is the music stellar, the lyrics are incredible. It is always great to listen to an album of substance, when the words formulated actually mean something. Thank you Goodnight Lights, for telling me something. Other standout tracks on Electric Spark include:

"Sleepwalking"

Oh hello female vocals. Perfectly timed. Made me purse my lips, shake my hair and do the head bob thing. (yeah, I actually did it)

"Education"

Certainly. It takes some serious riffs in order to keep my attention and be able to listen through a 7 min long song. I definitely learned something.

"5"

It made me feel like I went through an entire relationship with someone in 4 minutes, and felt every emotion perfectly.

"Daniel Johnson"

Have you ever seen The Devil and Daniel Johnson? No? Go rent it, Netflix it, whatever you have to do... then listen to this song. What an awesome concept.

"Hiding From The Sun"

It's like, Radiohead ate the Beatles on Thanksgiving. What a warm, wonderful feeling.

"Wired"

Album closing song... What a friggen cool bass line. Left me feeling bouncy, and eager to hear more.

Goodnight Lights

Every track on this album had something amazing to offer. One of coolest things about this band is that they are giving this album away free to download on their website. (www.goodnightlights.com) I have to say, the actual album art is really cool. I suggest you GO TO A SHOW and pick one up. You can stalk them on Facebook, Myspace & Twitter.

"Listen to the new album from Goodnight Lights, As Fas As The Moon"

Goodnight Lights return with a new album, released today, called As Far As The Moon that you can listen to in its entirety below. Goodnight Lights is Michael Schraeger on guitar and vocals, Faith Charlton (keyboards, vocals and percussion) and Ian Charlton (guitar and vocals); and the rhythm section of bassist John Delso and drummer Michael Ziegler. The Collingswood, NJ, based band caught our attention almost two years ago when they released their last album, Electric Spark. As Far As The Moon finds Goodnight Lights in a post-alternative, Aughts influenced musical space that bands like the Airborne Toxic Event and Arcade Fire traverse. On its new album, Goodnight Lights continue to sharpen its musical voice with well crafted songwriting, sparkling harmonies, smart melodies and excellent guitar playing. Goodnight Lights is having a record release party on Saturday, June 16th at Johnny Brenda’s with openers The Quelle Source and The Bailey Hounds. Go here for tickets and more information about the show. - The Key Music Blog

"Matthew Berlyant’s Top Ten"

Goodnight Lights – As Far as the Moon (self-released)

This Collingswood, NJ band’s 3rd full-length album was just released a few weeks ago, but it’s the first record of theirs that I’ve had a chance to hear. Judging by what I hear on this effort, though, I’m gonna need to give their earlier releases a chance because I really like this. Of the 9 songs found here, “Broken” and “Wreck” remind me a bit of The Arcade Fire (how could they not with the backup/gang choruses/shouts at the end of “Broken”, for example) and several other songs remind me a little of Spoon in the guitar work, but otherwise I have a difficult time pinning down the sound (that’s a good thing). Go here to hear it.

"Philadelphia Bandcamp Hunter: Goodnight Lights"

In this edition of Philadelphia Bandcamp Hunter we introduce you to Goodnight Lights. The local indie-rock quintet released its sophomore album, Electric Spark, in June. You can download the entire album for free here. You can also stream and download it below. The band includes brother and sister Faith (keyboard/vocals) and Ian Charlton (guitar/vocals), as well as Michael Schraeger (guitar/vocals), Jonah Delso (bass/vocals), and Michael Ziegler (drums).

The album is a terrific collection of songs that sits in the post-’90s alternative rock continuum with a high degree of originality—due in large part to the well crafted songwriting and vibrant playing. Though the album has some great hook-filled three- and four-minute songs (such as “Deeper Down” and “5?), the band shines on the longer tracks. On “Education” (which clocks in at 7:17), “Sleepwalking” (6:08), and the epic “Hiding From The Sun” (8:47), you can experience the dueling, pivotal guitars working hard. The arrangements on the longer songs skirt prog-rock/math-rock convention, yet do not fall prey to the cliches of either of those genres.

Goodnight Lights performs at the 6th Annual Halloween Show at The M Room on Friday, October 28th. As in previous years’ Halloween shows at The M Room, each band on the bill will be learning and playing an entire set as another famous band; The Bailey Hounds as T. Rex, Long Walk Home as Neil Young, The Quelle Source as Radiohead, and Goodnight Lights as The White Stripes. - The Key Music Blog
