"Gora Gora Orkestar"

If you’ve spent much time on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall during the past few summers, chances are you’ve happened upon Gora Gora Orkestar, a wild, brash marching band that plays infectious funk uniquely steeped in Eastern European folk and South American rhythm. Gora Gora has been around since 2009, and trumpet savant Alice Hansen (who is also a member of Atomga and frequently sits in with DeVotchKa) says that the fun the band has busking translates to “a very high-energy environment” when the large group takes its act to clubs, theaters and festivals around the country. “We love being out on the street engaging with our audience face to face,” she says. “It creates a very personal and energized experience with listeners that we absolutely try to bring to every performance.” According to Hansen, trombonist Breana Cowart has been appointed “band choreographer,” so if you’re heading to the Bohemian Biergarten (2017 13th Street in Boulder) this Friday, she suggests that you “keep an eye out for an ever-growing repertoire of band dance moves.” Just be careful with that giant boot of beer in case Gora Gora inspires a little move-busting in you, too. - Adam Perry
