Go The members: Go to Zero is Tommy Marz from St. Clair Shores (vocals and guitar), Chris Alef from Eastpointe (guitar), Bryan Keyes from West Bloomfield (bass) and drummer Jason Tucker from Waterford.

The history: The quartet formed out of the band Ease, which Marz, Keyes and Tucker were all a part of. After finding modest local success — gigs including headlining the Emerald Theatre and opening for The Verve Pipe — the guys craved new direction, thus forming Go to Zero with Alef. Its debut album, The Mean Season, was released last month, and celebrated with a release party at the Magic Bag in Ferndale.

What's up with the name: “Go to Zero” represents starting over and rebuilding, all while keeping the motivation you initially had,” said Marz.

The style: Citing influences such as Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and The Beatles, the foursome finds a solid rock sound with numerous inspirations.

“Each member has its own tastes in music, and it is the different musical tastes that make the creative process more successful,” said Marz. The band could never agree on a top 5 list for best albums due to the different tastes, but I’ll tell you that (The Beatles) Sgt. Pepper and Revolver have to be somewhere up there.”

Got anything recorded? The Mean Season dropped via Stagefiend Records June 19, 2004. The eleven tracks were recorded and mixed by Tony Hamera at Tempermill Studio in Detroit.

Copies of The Mean Season can be purchased through the band’s official Web site at www.gotozeromusic.com, as well as at Amazon.com and at all of Go to Zero’s live performances.

Tell us your future? “The passion for making music has always been strong with the band, and, like many other bands, making it is a common goal,” Marz said. “Putting the time and effort into the music makes it worthwhile, and if people out there enjoy and appreciate it, that really completes the cycle for us.”

When local musicians Tommy Marz, Bryan Keyes and Jason Tucker formed Go To Zero in 2003, they had nothing but high hopes. The guys had played together in a previous band called Ease, which did well in the Mount Clemens rock scene.

Go To Zero was a much more driven band, however. Some groups play for years and years before releasing any material, but Go To Zero put out a full-length album before they played a single show. The original idea was to record a few songs for an EP, but songwriter Tommy Marz had come up with so much material, the band decided to go with a full-length.

They recorded and produced their album “The Mean Season,” with Tony Hamera at Tempermill Studios, and released it on independent label Stagefiend Records.

Shortly after, they added talented guitarist Chris Alef to their ranks. “He’s a great guitar player,” Marz says. “He motivated us even further.”

Go to Zero debuted live at Jacoby’s in Detroit in May, and in early June they were the featured band on WJR’s “Mitch Albom Show.” The band’s next move is a big CD release party at the Magic Bag in Ferndale.

Name: Go to Zero

Lineup: Tommy Marz, guitar and vocals; Bryan Keyes, bass; Jason Tucker, drums and percussion; Chris Alef, guitar.

Sound: Go To Zero’s power pop sound is radio-friendly, but with a slight edge.

Next: The band will hold an official CD release party June 19 for “The Mean Season” at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale. Local bands Changes and Desolation Angels will warm up. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $7. Advance tickets can be purchased at Go To Zero’s Web site, www.gotozeromusic.com.

Bio

Even before they played their first live show together, the members of Go To Zero had invested more blood, sweat and tears into their project than many bands ever do. Formed in the fall of 2003, Go To Zero rose from the ashes of a locally-based band Ease, a group that used to pack in the fans at venues such as the Emerald Theatre and even opened for the local band turned national success The Verve Pipe. Ease front man Tommy Marz created Go To Zero with fellow Ease former members Bryan Keyes and Jason Tucker. They added able guitarist Chris Alef to their ranks, and the new group was ready for action.

A lot of soul searching goes into each and every album. But when you mix a renewed energy with determination and creativity, you usually end up with something worth listening to. Such is the case with Go to Zero's sophomore full length album release of "Robots!" which was recorded at the award winning Tempermill Studio in Ferndale, Michigan.

Today, they have numerous shows under their belts which include headlining some of the biggest and best venues in the Metro Detroit area as well as playing various festivals around the country. Those festivals include The Thirsty Melson Music Festival, Rolling Rock Town Fair Festival and The Stars and Stripes Festival. More recently Go to Zero co-headlined a show with The Verve Pipe front man Brian Vander Ark in front of a jam packed house this past October. Go to Zero along with their new album "Robots!" are poised to return to the top of the Detroit music scene.

Go To Zero will be performing at the 2011 Stars and Stripes Festival on Saturday July 3, 2011 on the Rock Stage at 9p.m. As well as the Uncle Sam Jam Festival on Friday July 9, 2011 at 7p.m.
