"The Herd / The Last Kinection / Grassroots Street Orchestra The Arena - Fri Aug 29"

The indistinct mumble of a hundred or so conversations is abruptly halted as the shrill sound of a lonesome violin pierces throughout the room demanding attention. The Grassroots Street Orchestra launch into Shisha – the first song in a night full of politically charged hip hop. The continually increasing crowd are drawn into the bluesy roots hip hop and grooves to a drumbeat which makes the chin of my part-time percussionist associate drop firmly to the floor. The set flows well, with front man Surya McEwen providing anti-capitalist banter between jams and ends with an a capella political spiel which is greeted by raised fists of solidarity. - Rave Magazine, Brisbane

"LABJACD, GRASSROOTS STREET ORCHESTRA, LANEOUS & THE FAMILY YAH The Zoo: 18.10.08"

Grassroots Street Orchestra, however, more than compensate for the first bands inadequacies. A thrilling and compelling ensemble with a slew of disparate influences and the intellect and artistry to unite them, Grassroots deliver a performance that goes largely unrivalled for the remainder of the evening. The group’s diverse instrumentation (utilising violin, bongos and harmonica in addition to a more standard band line-up) creates some truly intriguing songs, while MC Surya McEwen’s lyrics radiate with intelligence and insight. In essence, an electric and inspiring performance by one of the best hip hop outfits in Australia. - Time Off, Brisbane

Bio

South-East Queensland locals, Grassroots Street Orchestra, have created a formidable reputation and a dedicated following throughout Eastern Australia with their captivating original sound, and intense, high-energy live performances. Their unique style is a potent mix of passionate, politically charged, eloquent hip-hop lyricism, underpinned by exotic, progressive sounds from a jaw-dropping live instrumental lineup.

Time Off called described them as "A thrilling and compelling ensemble with a slew of disparate influences and the intellect and artistry to unite them", as well as naming them "one of the best hip hop outfits in Australia".

With standout festival performances at the likes of The Big Day Out, Roots Rap Reggae, Island Time/Vibe and The Pro-Show, as well as huge shows supporting the likes of The Herd, Lyrics Born, Urthboy and many more, industry showcases, several east coast tours, a successful studio EP in 2007, and live EP in 2008 under their belt - and with a debut album on the way. There are big things on the horizon for this six-piece phenomenon, and nothing can stop them blazing their way towards it.
