Bio

Grassworks Bluegrass is an award winning family bluegrass band with roots in Atlantic Canadian bluegrass that go back nearly 100 years. Four generations of the family are still active on the Atlantic Canadian Bluegrass circuit. Grassworks performs traditional, modern, and original, Bluegrass music. In demand in their community, Grassworks has performed at many Bluegrass Festivals in Atlantic Canada, as well as community venues and on the local cable television. These musicians bring polished performances and outstanding musicianship to every show.
In January 2007, the band released its first CD, which is a compilation of tunes written by band members, Nathan, Warren, and Dana. The CD is entitled “HOME, All Original” and includes “Ruby” and “Home,” which are songs requested by audiences wherever Grassworks plays. The CD has aired on both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Bluegrass radio programs, as well as CBC Radio.
Nerissa and Warren Beeler bring a combined 50 years of bluegrass performing experience to the band. Nerissa’s powerful vocals and Warren’s award winning bass playing provide a solid core to the band’s sound. Nerissa has performed with numerous Bluegrass bands, Church choirs, and community choirs, throughout her career. Warren is a past member of the award winning bands Close to Home and Grassfire. As well, Warren is a recipient of the ECBMA Bass Player of the Year. As well, he is a two time nominee of the ECBMA Composer of the Year, for songs such as Home, John 3:16, and Norman’s Gun (to name just a few).
Warren and Nerissa’s daughters, Teresa and Dana, provide harmony as only family can. They are both experienced musicians, even at their young ages and have been singing and performing most of their lives. Dana wrote her first “hit” (Ruby) when she was 16 and continues to add her originals to the band’s repertoire. You can listen to her newest song, “Gamblin Man” on our web site, www.grassworksbluegrass.com.
Diane Clarke is widely considered one of the finest musical educators in Nova Scotia and is currently enrolled in the Masters program at Acadia in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, studying Music Education. Although Diane was a newcomer to the Bluegrass scene when she joined Grassworks, she provides excellent Bluegrass style rhythm guitar for the band.
Nathan Beeler plays mandolin and lead guitar with the band. Nathan cut his bluegrass teeth with Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band and Shady Lane and has performed with such eclectic groups as Scotia Brass and Symphony Nova Scotia. In 2002, Nathan released an independent recording of original songs; and his music has been played on CBC radio.
Cleve Beeler is the newest member of the band. Cleve is a very well respected musician throughout the Canadian Bluegrass world. After more than forty years playing bass in such bands as Surefire, Kopper Kettle, and the award winning Grassfire, Cleve decided to take up the challenge of learning the Banjo. Cleve felt that Grassworks needed a banjo; and since he met the criteria of being a family member (father to Warren and Nathan), at the age of 65, he started to learn the banjo. He joins Grassworks this year on their tour of the Maritime festivals.
