Grayson Sanders Band

Biography

Thumping funk rhythms, jazz melodies, and soaring vocals, the Grayson Sanders Band seamlessly unites the members' extensive jazz training, life-long rock influences and brilliant pop sensibilities to create a fresh synthesis of sound. Navigating the sea of today's monotony, their music floats above the rest, held up by the strength of Grayson Sanders' exciting songwriting and the stilts of a uniquely funkified rhythm section.

Formed in the fall of 2006, GSB met at NYU's prestigious Jazz program, where the three musicians have cultivated their skill with top players such as John Scofield, Kenny Werner and Richard Bona. Drummer Alex Beckmann's unique playing resembles the organic versatility of Carter Beauford and the experimental spirit of Billy Martin, creating a solid rhythmic environment for the band's melodic elements to flourish. Playing fretless bass with the funk and soul of Motown's James Jamerson, Jay Goodman's grasp of multiple musical styles is reminiscent of Jaco Pastorius. These qualities only intensify Grayson Sanders' command of the keyboard, all serving as the vibrant backdrop to his soulful lyrics. An honest combination of boyish wonderment and a sophisticated sense of the world, he writes earnestly about both despair and happiness.

Perfecting their live show with the utmost discipline, the band spends hours reworking songs, solos, and chord changes, to succeed in bringing jazz improv to modern structures. The result is a stellar fusion as sultry as Jamiroquai and infectious as Coldplay. After captivating listeners last spring on a tour of prep schools and colleges, GSB has continued to rally a growing fan base, selling out the Knitting Factory's tap bar on several occasions, as well as playing such esteemed NYC venues as the Lion's Den. Along with GSB's live show, their EP Found at Sea, released in summer 2007, clearly establishes the band as one of those rare groups who have the facility and understanding to traverse various genres of music and craft expertly structured tunes.

I Once Knew a Girl Called Angel

Written By: Grayson Sanders

I once knew a girl who i swore was my angel,
she lifted me up,
flew me out of this place,
from my state of distaste for all love and its trials,
to a new sort of heaven I saw in her smile.
She followed her heart knowing mine would soon follow.
She never looked back, in her heart was my hollow,
A haven from fears and my pitiful case,
And I knew in her face I could see my God's grace.

Sometimes in life you gotta lose some to gain some;
I lost my way in the woods.
She found me and told me that nothing can be desperate if this one thing's understood:
You can pick yourself up like pieces of a puzzle, but sometimes the places have changed.
And after all my foolish tries and cowardly cries, she left my side,
and I lost my guide again.

I lost my guide again.

I need a place to hide,
Can I come inside, Ahh
The world's got a hold on me,
and I can't break free, Ahh
I run back in circles now,
Fallen to the ground, Ahh
So please, just fly me back home.

I once knew girl who I swore was my angel, she knew all about me before i could speak.
Before i could smile, before I could hide, before I could say what was wrong in my life.
She flew me away to her silver lined city,
A place that I'd been but just never seemed pretty,
And I loved,loved,loved,loved,loved.

How she skipped clouds one through eight, oh and dropped me on nine.
She skipped clouds one through eight, oh and dropped me on nine.

I need a place to hide,
Can I come inside, Ahh
The world's got a hold on me,
and I can't break free, Ahh
I run back in circles now,
Fallen to the ground, Ahh
So please, just fly me back home.

My Own Demons (Featuring Niia)

Written By: Grayson Sanders

if she didn't love me then she wouldn't be with me, but all the bonding they had, was it all friendly?
Is it wrong to question her?
Will it make things worse?
Do I need to see her? I did.

And time and time again I say I'll change but it's just so hard to change my habits,
Just fixing and mending.
But sooner or later, these patches will come off,
Just exposing, all the holes we left for another time.

But her disappointments and frustrations have become my own demons,
My brain and my heart thrive for all the wrong reasons,
And I hate them all, oh but I love her.
So send home the armies and send home all the captains,
I'm the workhorse the rider the slave the slavemaster of my own fate.
Ohh

If he didn't love me then he wouldn't be with me, I just wish that I knew,
that he knew, that every time that tinge comes up inside me saying I should be alone, I just don't know.
If I should fight it off, or just give in.

But her disappointments and frustrations have become my own demons,
My brain and my heart thrive for all the wrong reasons,
And I hate them all, oh but I love her.
So send home the armies and send home all the captains,
I'm the workhorse the rider the slave the slavemaster of my own fate.
Ohh

Oh but I love her, but I love him, oh but I love her, but I love him, Oh but I love her, i love him, I love, love, love, love, love. Ahh

The Turtle Shell

Written By: Grayson Sanders

We said we'd run away together,
To build a life for only two.
But time took its toll and claimed another,
and it stole me away from you.

Yes we talked of all the cozy winters,
In a house far away from it all.
But I'm sorry my darling if this time I just walk away,
Cuz if it was meant to be, then I'll find my way back, so that you can carry me, and give me all the courage I lack.

But I promise I won't...

Run away, and leave forever
Cuz then we'd lose something beautiful,
That I'll never find again,
Oh you mean the, world to me,
But at the moment
Oh I gotta turn around walk away and find another place to be.

It wasn't too long after I met you,
That I knew what we'd have was something good.
But everyone knows from their head to their toes that there's problems.
It's just a matter of how they start, how they end and how you make it right.

But I promise I won't...

Run away, and leave forever
Cuz then we'd lose something beautiful,
That I'll never find again,
Oh you mean the, world to me,
But at the moment
Oh I gotta turn around walk away and find another place to be.

But it doesn't have to be like you're a kitten in a tree for this to happen.
But if that's the way that you want it,
And you're scared to fall.
Then when I go away spend each and every day just firefighting.
So when I come back, I'll be good enough, to carry you down.
But I promise you now,
I won't...

Run away, and leave forever
Cuz then we'd lose something beautiful,
That I'll never find again,
Oh you mean the, world to me,
But at the moment
Oh I gotta turn around walk away and find another place to be.

Oh I gotta turn around walk away and find another place to be.

Something New

Written By: Grayson Sanders

I've got plastic plate fantasies and paper napkin dreams,
I'm useful and simple it seems.
But I'm in the cupboard just feeling alone, so get me out let's be a team.

I'll buy you flowers, you'll smile and blush, you'll tell me it's been quite a long time.
I won't have to answer, just grin at my feet,
It's been quite a long time for me too.

And I can't wait, to wait by the phone.
And I don't care, about your past,
Just please let me think that you're perfect.
I'm excited to learn, I'm excited to know you.

We'll make resolutions like tonight is the night,
We get dressed and go some place nice.
But you're simple like me, you just don't wanna say you'd rather stay watch TV and drink wine.

And I can't wait, to not be alone,
And I don't care, about your past,
Just please let me think that you're perfect.
I'm excited to learn, I'm excited to know you.

My pillows smell like you and so do my shirts, you've claimed half my bathroom and heart.
And if I didn't know better I'd give the second half away so my home would be a hole we'd jump through.

You'll be my lawfully bedded girlfriend I love to show off, but not for your looks or your clothes. Cuz in a year or five I'll take a dive if you'll swim with me and all the fish in the sea should believe.

And I can't wait, to be the only one you see,
And I don't care, about your past,
Just please make believe that you're perfect.
I'm excited to learn, I'm excited to know,
I don't know how we'll be, I don't know where we'll go,
All I know is to me, you are utterly perfect.

The Birthday

Written By: Grayson Sanders

I said my head's been clockin and my whole world's rockin cuz I just lost my reason to live.
It's been a long time comin but I didn't wanna listen now i'm sittin wishin you were right here.
It's just another mistake in a long line of many,
Another old fool that got lost in the maze,
Just drag me along while I keep getting older, lemme blow out my candles make a wish for a better day.

It was early June, when I first met you,
I'd never seen such a sunny face.
But you were born into a family and they never stopped to listen which is probably why you're feelin this way.
I said time and time again how I hoped it would work, but I never stopped to hear your point.
I knew I was wrong so let me quit while I'm behind but don't blow out my candles save my wish for a better day.

Ohh it hasn't been long but you're so far gone from me,
I knew I was wrong but you lead me along it's not fair,
You left me inside and dropped me on my head,
I think it's too late to love, to hard to find, and your back's gonna break if we don't give this some time.

Oh to keep the highs and fight the lows, I'm starting to think this is how life goes,
And it would be so easy so easy.
If I could speak with my body,
and act with my words,
to do anything good, oh I wish I could.

I tried my best, but I knew
That there was nothing I could do,
So undereducated at a loss for sound,
The cat got my ears and now I want them back, so I can hear, and get things back to the way they used to be with you baby.
But I don't see it happening soon,
I don't see it happening soon,
I don't see it happening soon.

Ohh it hasn't been long but you're so far gone from me,
I knew I was wrong but you lead me along it's not fair,
You left me inside and dropped me on my head,
I hope it's not too late to love, to hard to find, cuz if I don't get you back then I think I will lose my mind.
