"May 28 2013"

GreenhornBluehorn, GreenhornBluehorn EP (out now, self-released, greenhornbluehorn.com/songs.html): The debut EP from this quartet of city-dwelling brothers and friends is heavy on pretty acoustic tunes in the tradition of Jeff Tweedy. Think lush harmonies, warm melodies, and ’60s-esque folk sure to bring out your campfire-singing romantic side. (Fri., May 31, Conor Byrne) KEEGAN PROSSER - Seattle Weekly

"Ball of Wax 34 Songs: GreenhornBluehorn – “Great River”"

Like Emiko Blalock’s “Fairuza”, “Great River” is composed of just voice and acoustic guitar. “Great River” carries a hazy, Topanga Canyon-esque sense of longing across five minutes of strumming and singing that’s more meditative than sprawling. Local Seattle band GreenhornBluehorn are Ball of Wax veterans (from Volume 32) who have a warm, familiar folk-pop sound that features the vocal harmonies of the Brothers Antal, transplants from upstate New York who originally got started in town in band called Falcon. The Antals are deft, compelling singers, making GreenhornBluehorn’s sound easy to get into. - Ball of Wax blog

"New Music Fridays: One Fish, Two Fish, GreenhornBluehorn"

In honor of my most recent trip to Seattle, a local folk indie band with some beautiful harmonies and chords. Check out the rest of their music at greenhornbluehorn.com - cminor7

"Live Tonight: Rev. Horten Heat, Telekinesis, Blake Noble, GreenhornBluehorn"

Even when the songs on GreenhornBluehorn’s self-titled EP slip into clap-and-stomp, hoot-and-holler territory, the rich vocal harmonies of brothers Brent and Chris Antal, both of whom also play guitar, are still calming. Bassist James Fairchild and Shane McDonald on keys add even more warmth to the band’s folk tunes—especially “Bag of Bones,” which earned a spot, and rightly so, on Ball of Wax Vol. 32, a recent compilation of Seattle talent. With Black Giraffe, Vigilante Santos. Waid’s, 1212 E. Jefferson St., 328-6493. 9:30 p.m. $5. 21 and over. ACP - Seattle Weekly

"FRESH FAVES: BATCH 54: GreenhornBluehorn"

Hailing from various corners of the U.S but currently residing in Seattle, brothers Brent & Chris Antal and their bandmates James Fairchild and Shane Mcdonald, make the kind of timeless folk-rock that could easily originate from any of the last five decades. Their pulsating beats and lilting acoustic guitars are complimented by pitch perfect harmonies and carefully constructed guitar melodies. This track is taken from the band’s debut, self-titled five track EP, released earlier this month. - Fresh on the net

Bio

Brothers Brent and Chris Antal of Seattle folk-pop group GreenhornBluehorn have been playing music together since their childhood imitations of the Monkees. By high school they were honing their musical chops in the punk and hardcore scene of hometown Ithaca, NY. Their playful camaraderie continues in GreenhornBluehorn, whose timeless tunes play homage to our collective pop consciousness with influence from the likes of Elliott Smith, Wilco, and Dr. Dog, to America, Motown, and, of course, the Monkees.

The band's live shows bring on the boot stompin' with anthemic hooks on acoustic and keys, woven with the swaying layered syncopations of the Antals' harmonies. (Its been said that the voices of these first and third-born brothers are a major third apart). Brent's beat-poet-like lyrics are part reflection and part rallying, evoking haunting recurring imagery of nature-scapes and mental states. A live performance of their latest crowd-pleasing closing tune, Saddle Up and Double Back, feels like being at a spoken word night at a western saloon...just before things get rowdy.

The brothers are currently joined by bassist James Fairchild and Shane McDonald on keys. Since their debut in Spring 2013 with a self-released EP, the band has twice been featured on Ball of Wax compilations and brought into Charles Bork's all-analog studio (where he has previously recorded The Head and the Heart) for a 7" coming out on his groove-o-matic label. The band has even more to come in 2014 with an album being recorded in the California desert. Keep tuned to their soundcloud and YouTube for sneak-peaks of their latest.
