Bio

Green Lights were formed in the summer of 2006 as a result of that lethal combination of boredom and spite. Legend has it that there were strange magnetic forces at play when Colin (vocals, guitar, Sagittarius), Daniel (drums, brown eyes) and Nigel (synths, backing vocals, mildly myopic) were drawn to live together in the same North Dublin semi-d and subsequently, form a band.

This formation came about one night over a late night game of Scrabble, an array of snacks and a Mighty Boosh DVD Boxset. This combination helped the three guys to realise that together they possessed the musical ability of about 1.79 actual musicians. With a barrel load of pizzaz and gumption and the suitably insipid and inoffensive moniker of GREEN LIGHTS, they were set.

In defining the band’s sound start with a left-handed guitar laced with distortion and delay. Add vocals ranging from heartfelt moan to piercing falsetto. Now throw in some tactless synthery, home programmed loops and a floppy-haired drummer doing his damndest to hold the whole thing together.

In their first year together, Green Lights managed to weasel their way onto the stages of most of Dublin's best intimate music venues from Whelans and The Village through to Temple Bar Music Centre and Crawdaddy. They've also played national dates in Monaghan, Galway, Cork, Dundalk and Limerick in support to bands as diverse as Grand Pocket Orchestra, Jinx Lennon, Dark Room Notes and The Flaws. Playing on the same bill as acts as diverse as Fight Like Apes, Twin Kranes, Ham Sandwich and Subplots may well have proved more inspiring in creating their sound than the usual cited fare of collective record collections.

With sonic influences as diverse as Tom Vek, Low and Pavement, and combining everything they'd picked up in approach from listening to bands like Radiohead, Grizzly Bear and Yo La Tengo, Green Lights set about getting their ramshackled sound onto record. The result of this endeavour is their first release the 5 track EP “Small Curious Things”, which was released on the band’s own label, 516 Records, in March 2008.

Since this EP’s release Green Lights have been tirelessly promoting the EP around the country bringing their live show to as many places as possible. The band is currently writing and road-testing new material for their second EP which will be released in late autumn 2008.

"..(Small Curious Things) showcases some very strong songwriting talent... "Gone Out" is muscular, distorted Pixies-esque rocker that has lead single written all over it.. suggests some really interesting possible directions for the future"
[Hotpress EP review - March 2008]

"..every now and again you come across something like this that's a little different and interesting... Small Curious Things EP is a breath of fresh air.... fantastically addictive beats... You can't fault this EP and it is very clear they have worked very hard on their sound. These guys are ones to watch and deserve to go far"
[Galway/Athlone Advertiser]

"..a lovely blend of almost ambient like post rock sounds....imagine early pavement with some of the more explosive elements of mogwai and a wee bit of the experimental rock of radiohead....five well written tracks with plenty of clever twists and turns around every corner"
[Road Records EP review]

"..one of the most unique and exciting bands to come out of Dublin in years. swept across the landscape of Dublin's underground music venues like a tune-spewing behemoth, leaving a trail of dropped jaws and eager new fans in their wake."
[Podcasting Ireland 02 Making Waves]

"This sure is… interesting. Starting with an electronic instrumental then heading into rock band territory, this EP shows that, although the Green Lights have potential, they just don’t quiet make this genre-hopping, throw-everything-in-but-the-kitchen-sink EP work. Incorporating many musical elements can work wonderfully for others, but the Green Lights may need to re-assess their approach. A shame that this doesn’t really hit the mark, as the Monaghan lads obviously have an abundance of talent."
[Aoife McDonnell, State Magazine - Small Curious Things EP Review]

"..truly stunning debut.."
[Alan Jacques, Green and Live - Limerick 95FM]

"(Small Curious Things) was released earlier this year and is definitely worth checking out ...a nice eclectic blend of electronic beeps, pop and rock.... "
[Aidan Lynch, ICON - Phantom FM]

"(Small Curious Things) comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"
[Tower Records Dublin New Music Guide]

"(Green Lights) do really interesting stuff in the studio. When you hear them on CD it's mind blowing the sounds they come out with"
[Paul Finn (The Flaws) - Hotpress Interview June 2008]

"Brilliant 3 piece band hailing from Monaghan. Think Pavement meets TV on the Radio."
[Venue Promotions]

"..all lights are set to green. Green Lights really are ones to watch"
