""Great Storytelling""

The lyrics are awesome - great storytelling in the style of Darren Hanlon or Jens Lenkman - DAN BUHAGIAR - Triple J Unearthed

15 May 2013

Together since 2011, Darwin alt-rock band Green Stone Garden have been wooing Top End audiences with their finely-crafted live shows, lyrical song writing and lush, layered sound. Located somewhere between indie rock and indie folk, land and sea, intimacy and isolation, they take their storytelling and melodic cues from artists such as Arcade Fire, Wilco, Broken Social Scene and Jeff Buckley.

Inspired by their tropical home, Green Stone Garden’s songs are marked by a languid and heady feel, with a temperate folk sound combined with a darker shade of synth-driven rock. Bass, drums, synth and guitar underwrite lyrical narratives from frontman and songwriter, Mike Meston, whose songs seed stories like the dense growth of the Darwin Wet.

Gigging regularly at venues across Darwin – including as support for local and international artists including Gomez (UK), Jeff Martin (Canada), Dappled Cities, Big Scary and Husky – the band have earned a solid fan base, gaining critical and popular acclaim around the Territory and the nation, with Meston receiving the inaugural NT Song of the Year Award in the Folk category in 2012 and the band winning the rock category of the 2013 NT Song of the Year Award.

The band’s debut EP North, featuring the single ‘The Island’, is out now. The record was produced in Melbourne’s Soundpark Studios by renowned Australian producer Steven Schram (Cat Empire, San Cisco, Little Birdy) and mastered by Grammy nominated Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, The Shins, Sigur Ros) in the US.
