Biography

As a Finalist for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest 2012 Green Tea is turning heads with their songwriting, indie roots rock sound, and high energy shows. Their song "Run" was recently chosen by a top music industry panel of judges including Fergie, The Veronicas, Natasha Bedingfield, Jesse Harris, Lamont Dozier, Matt Pinfield, Bob Weir, Ryan Shaw, The Bacon Brothers, or Ken Komisar. Among other career accomplishments, Green Tea has also opened for Rusted Root 3 times, Family Groove Company, My Dear Disco, Tommy and the High Pilots, & That 1 Guy, and supported Richie Havens, Gaelic Storm, John Hiatt, Alejandro Escovedo, Trapper Schoepp and the Shades, & Wookiefoot, received 2010 & 2011 WAMI nominations, and showcased at NACA - Northern Plains 2009 leading to 15 different college shows throughout the Midwest.

To share the unified soul that is music through songs that drive bodies to move, inspire the conscious observer, and enchant the intellectual spirit is the main substance of Green Tea's music and performance. In a live show review, Dino Corvino of the Central WI City Pages said “It takes just one experience hearing Green Tea to become a fan… Perhaps that’s why, when weather pushed their Concert on the Square show into the Great Hall last year, the place literally overflowed with people frantic to hear the music.”

"They will blow you away from the first note you hear." -Jane Woods, Fanrealm

Sonic diversity flows rampant within this group whom originates from New York, Washington State, Illinois, and Wisconsin, yet combining these various backgrounds is the natural fusion of Green Tea. The 2012 album release “Wake the Conscious” summarizes this fresh perspective in songwriting and ultimately an energized stage performance. Mixing original indie hooks and lyrics with driving progressions is the band’s modus operandi, catalyzing original inventions behind the scenes and on stage. Not to mention, John (flutes, whistles, vocals) is most likely “THE WORLD’S BEST” hands player (it has to be seen to be believed).

Yet, the band has played the same stages as Melissa Etheridge, Nickel Creek, Indigo Girls, Blues Traveler, Guster, Richie Havens, Violent Femmes, & more…

Lyrics

Shafted

Written By: John Coletta

They called on us to dig it deep,
To dig it wide, from side to side.

They said that it was safe to drill;
We’d never die within that hill.

But don’t forget, the coal sky fell,
And then began the miner’s hell.

The official report, when it came out,
Well all the miner’s it made us shout:

Chorus
And they all blamed us, Lying in the coal dust.
And they all blamed us, Sighing in the coal dust.
And they all blamed us, Crying in the coal dust.
And they all blamed us, Dying in the coal dust.

They tore the top right off that hill,
And made us drink their PR swill.

They said that they would put it back,
But stuffed our money in their sack.

One day the miners ‘ll take control,
And have a say about that hole.

Till then we’ll sing a hearty song,
It goes like this, so sing along:

Chorus

And she had to wash my clothes,
Two or three darn times;

To cut the coal dust grime,
So I knew the boss had lied.

Oh he said the air was clean,
That the workers caused the blast,

But the evil of their scheme,
Is the story that will last.

Now listen, tell me can you hear,
The minors’ ghosts are very near.

They whisper in the bossman’s ear
A bitter tale he hates to hear:

The roof the roof it’s falling whole,
But this time it’s not made of coal.

It’s dirty dollars that collapse
And knock the bossman on his

Chorus

The Cove

Written By: Trevor Roark

Push and pull, customized dance, mesh is full
Forced into the shore like a strong hand pressing more
They… they are our friends, let them be friends and
cherish their smile
Then… you will begin loving the same fight for their lives
Just like us they make love for fun
Your heart’s the same, it’s time to unfold again
We all know something’s not right, they should know
Blue canvas stained red, shortening life
They… they are our friends, let them be friends and
cherish their smile
Then… you will begin loving the same fight for their lives
Just like us they make love for fun
Your heart’s the same, it’s time to unfold again
Strong days change waves
Whole kindness for good, through and through
Strong waves change ways
Whole kindness for good, through and through
Just like us they make love for fun
Your heart’s the same, it’s time to unfold again…

To Live Without Dead Time

Written By: Trevor Roark

Meme warfare, what they tell you
Hundreds stare, we the people
Renew life, affirmation
May we smile? Reawaken
Expansion, endless fun
The way forward is overflowing with love
Without means to live we are bound by normal observation
I am called to this, an adventure led by occupation
We struggle, nothing saves us
Minds are full, wake the conscious
Break away, from the program
Rise today, know the system
Expansion, endless fun
The way forward is overflowing with love
Without means to live we are bound by normal observation
I am called to this, an adventure led by occupation

You Left Me Upset

Written By: Trevor Roark

You left me upset
You’ve been so content lately
Just the other day
threw your voice away fighting
What I should have done
wasn’t give you some baggage
In a perfect world
lives a wonderful moment
You have become locked in a dungeon where
your mind rambles
Let’s not forget you’re innocent,
you’re the only victim
You left me upset
Bow my head again aching
Now my mind is dull,
although beautiful remnant
Tried to give away all the words you said kindly
Is your mind made up?
Will you turn this love forward?
You have become locked in a dungeon where
your mind rambles
Let’s not forget you’re innocent,
you’re the only victim
Through all of this recurring bliss
led us to be reckless
Like beautiful, phenomenal, yeah…

Indigenous

Written By: John Coletta

They took away our homes, they took away our ways,
they took away our whiskey, and the ancient days
They took away our drums, they took away our beer,
they took away our lovers, and they gave us fear
They said we were not real, they said we couldn’t feel,
they said we were not human, that we’d only steal
They said that we would lie, they said we had to die,
they said that we were only dirt, and they the gleaming sky
And I dream, that the drums ring out through all the hills
And I dream, that the whistle speaks for the cool-runnin’ rills
And I dream, that the rocks reclaim their ancient songs
And I dream, that we hear the call to right old wrongs
They took away our ways, they took away our ways
Away away, away away, they took away our ways
They took away our ways, they took away our ways
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a month
They took away our ways
A took-a, took-a, took-a, took-a tick, tick, tick, tick
Someday we’ll set our life and times aright again
We’ll drink our own and serve not foreign men
Someday our tongues will sing the notes they used to know
Not spit out words that taste like rotten joe
They took away our homes, they took away our ways,
they took away our whiskey, and the ancient days
They took away our drums, they took away our beer,
they took away our lovers, and they gave us fear
They took away our fiddles, they took away our flutes,
they took away the tunes we played, and made us jump through hoops
They took away our lands, they took away our bands,
but in the end we’ll play a song that kicks them in their cans!
They took away our ways, they took away our ways
Away away, away away, they took away our ways
They took away our ways, they took away our ways
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a month
They took away our ways
A took-a, took-a, took-a, took-a tick, tick, tick, tick

John Dory

Written By: Trevor Roark

Deep below the sea, the coast of Ireland,
that’s where John Dory tries to live again
Sharks and bony fish try to grapple him
He gives an evil eye and fronts the spiny fin
He fronts the spiny fin
Why did you decide
to play a hand that breeds a life with the tide?
Who did lead you here?
Was it that foolish King or maybe just your fear?
Yeah… yeah… yeah…
Oh…. Oh… John Dory
Then, a ship’s captain meets the King of France
Begs for his pardon, a pirate’s song & dance
Captive Englishmen was the promise made
“Bound and brought to thee” he said to save his face
He didn’t know his place
Why did you decide
to play a hand that breeds a life with the tide?
Who did lead you here?
Was it that foolish King or maybe just your fear?
Yeah… yeah… yeah…
Oh…. Oh… John Dory
Then someone shouts it out: “Ba da day yada dat da”
Sailed a Cornish man with fifty oars a side
Miles from nearby land, he led a sturdy ride
Stout and good black bark, it would be hard to throw
Fierce and bold Nicholl, he caused the undertow
John Dory wouldn’t know
Spied by Nicholl’s crew John Dory couldn’t hide
For the fight ensued, cannons and trumpets cried
Seeing the big brown bill, their swords were drawn at
length
Poor old John Dory, he couldn’t hold his strength
He didn’t know his place
Shout! Shout! Shout it out…
Like you mean it with your broken mouth!
Swim those waves, predator get your prey… John Dory
He now swims amongst the fishes!

Do You Know Your Name

Written By: Trevor Roark

Did you know that his hands are hungry?
Feet will go where the work can find him
Taken back by the joy of kissing
Who can tell where his mind might take him?
Drifting now towards some good that came in,
even though mindless minds are racing
Fill two cups with your best intentions
Link the way between cost and laughter
Do you know your name when you hit the bottom?
Do you know your name? Sold for fear & honor!
Go ahead, go ahead my friend!
Go ahead, go ahead my friend!
Look away when their eyes start pointing
You should know, don’t believe in faces
Lately there’s been a push for several
unique things among years of question
Elements of a stagnant system,
broken up by some random faces
Left us here wondering if we’re symptoms
of a land that’s nullified
Do you know your name when you hit the bottom?
Do you know your name? Sold for fear & honor!
Go ahead, go ahead my friend!
Go ahead, go ahead my friend!
Bi di bah dot dot dooyah…
Now it’s time to bring it home… Now it’s time!

Run

Written By: Trevor Roark

Carry on with the way that you are
Not a care about the scene from afar
Methodology with criminal ways
Certain love for autonomy stays
Dance, laugh, buy, inhale when you feel right
Turn a blind eye just to be liked
Hey… what’d ya do that for? Left me here pressed against the floor
Hey… what’d ya do that for? Give it back!
I for one won’t stand for this love
Love that’s buried in the shadows of fun
Overwhelmed by sensory ease, soon enough you’ll be begin’
me please
This, that, mine, yours, wasn’t meant to be Leave them be and your
mind will stay clear
Oh… now you’re feelin’ strange, nevermind that my heart is the same
Oh… now we’re feelin’ strained, don’t just live for yourself
Run & run away
Run… Deliver what you say
Love… Forget not this today
Run… Run & run away
Not to be mean but I gotta say,
you wouldn’t be missed if you left today
Sometimes it’s hard to hang around someone that can’t even see the ground
Lies, fears, and scams were the gifts that you gave, Oh mama!
Why… does this hurt so bad? I never meant for burning your hand
Why… don’t you take a stand for our love?
Run & run away
Run… Deliver what you say
Love… Forget not this today
Run… Run & run away
