Tallahassee, FL (June 2, 2009) – Green Thumb, a unique hip-hop/jazz band, recently appeared live on WVFS V-89 for a two hour concert of original work. The Hootenanny Show, hosted by DJ Mannes, is a weekly program on the radio station, which targets the 41,000 Florida State University Students. The concert was Green Thumb’s first live broadcast performance.
“We were proud of our show and glad to share our music with the station’s listeners,” said Killa Cali. “Green Thumb allows us to express our various musical talents, which is our passion.”
Called the most distinctive independent hip-hop group in the area, Green Thumb is comprised of musicians whose collective backgrounds span the gamut of music from jazz to hip-hop and more. The band’s charismatic emcees, Gainstaville and Killa Cali, are widely respected veterans of the Tallahassee hip-hop scene. The rest of the band members are Alex Schecter on trumpet, Evan Schecter on drums, Jarrett Carter on guitar, Jonah Pierre on keyboards and Barry Stephenson on upright bass.
Green Thumb is dedicated to fusing the rhythmic and lyrical brilliance of hip-hop with the harmonic and melodic sophistication of jazz into an innovative new sound. The musical background of this creative group includes jazz, hip-hop, funk, rock and gospel. Both jazz and hip-hop feature musical improvisation, flexibility and expressive freedom, so bridging the gap between the two genres was a logical step. By fusing jazz and hip-hop, two all-American musical forms, Green Thumb has created another.

In order to accomplish this goal, Green Thumb has assembled a group of musicians whose backgrounds, collectively, span the gamut of American music. The band, composed of upright bass, drums, keyboards, guitar and trumpet, is lead by their two fearless emcees, Gainstaville, from Florida, and Killa Cali, from California. With emcees from opposite coasts and a band of versatile musicians, Green Thumb takes hip-hop to the next level.
