MY MUM AND DAD
Lyrics by Greg Baldock

MY FATHER DIED WHEN I WAS JUST 13
ON THE 27TH OF JANUARY
OUT OF 12 IN THE FAMILY
I WAS THE LAST TO KNOW

I CRIED AND CRIED BECAUSE IT HURT ME SO
THEN OFF TO THE FARM WE HAD TO GO
ALTHOUGH MY FATHER HAD DIED LAST NIGHT
THE MILKING HAD TO BE DONE.

WE BURIED HIM THERE IN THE CEMETRY
WITH A SPARE PLOT FOR MY MUM TO BE
THERE WAS NO TIME FOR GRIEVING THERE
THE COWS WERE WAITING AT HOME

ALTHOUGH IT WAS HARD FOR MANY YEARS
IT BECAME EASIER WITH A FEW LESS TEARS
THE FARM HAD TO BE WORKED EACH DAY
BY THOSE LEFT AT HOME.

MY MUM FINALLY SOLD THE FARM
ALL THE HARD WORK HAD DONE US NO HARM
THE WIDOWS PENSION SHE HAD TO HAVE
TO FEED HER FAMILY.

FOR 50 ODD YEARS SHE LOVED THAT MAN
MY FATHER DON WAS A GREAT MAN
A LOVE FOR A MAN I HAVE SELDOM SEEN
TO LAST FOR ALL THESE YEARS

WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR MY MUM TO GO
WE WERE SAD BUT WE ALL DID KNOW
MY FATHER WOULD BE WAITING FOR HER
ON THE OTHER SIDE.

WE PLACED HER THERE BESIDE MY DAD
IN THE DOUBLE GRAVE THAT WAS PREPARED
30 ODD YEARS HE HAD WAITED THERE
TO BE WITH HER AGAIN

AS I STAND HERE BESIDE THE GRAVES
AT CHRISTMAS TIME AND ON BIRTHDAYS
THE EMOTIONS WELL UP INSIDE OF ME
WITH THE LOVE SHE HAD FOR HIM

I VOW TO LIVE TIL I’M 93
SO MY CHILDREN’S KIDS WILL BE ABLE TO SEE
HOW MUCH OF MY FATHER LIVES IN ME
A GRANDPA TO EACH ONE

FOR 50 ODD YEARS SHE LOVED THAT MAN
MY FATHER DON WAS A GREAT MAN
A LOVE FOR A MAN I HAVE SELDOM SEEN
TO LAST FOR ALL THESE YEARS
A LOVE THAT LASTED FOR ALL THESE YEARS…
