Bio

Greg Byers, cellist and bassist, is one of the most respected up and coming artists in the music scene today. Despite his youthful appearance, he has already performed in 10 countries to crowds of over 15,000 people. To his credit, he has shared the stage with iconoclastic musicians such as Dr. John, Barry Harris, Fred Wesley, Will Lee, Shelly Berg, Sammy Figueroa, Bruce Hornsby, Steve Miller, Patti Austin, Die Artze, Clarence Reid (a.k.a. Blowfly), and many more.

A native of Rochester, New York, Greg first began studying cello at the early age of 2 1/2. He grew as a classical cellist, and throughout grade school he performed and toured with the Hochstien Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. After winning the Jo Amish Young Artists Concerto Competition, he was introduced to the possibilities of jazz by a classmate. He soon became fascinated with the genre, and began to figure out how to apply what he was hearing on seminal jazz records to the cello. He soon attended Berklee School of Music for a summer, and began to focus heavily on improvised music.

After high school, Greg was accepted into the prestigious University of Miami, where he began to study both the acoustic and electric bass. He also purchased an electric cello in order to create a more unique sound. After honing his performing talents in countless ensembles inside & outside of school, Greg obtained Summa Cum Laude and became the first jazz cellist to graduate from the University of Miami. With a degree under his belt, Greg stayed in Miami in order to pursue his musical career.

Following a year of freelance performing, recording, and teaching, Greg moved to Santa Clarita, CA in order to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Performance/Composition at California Institute of the Arts. The school offered him the chance to perform in a variety of musical styles, hone his music engineering skills, and bolster his film composition & sound design. It also helped him realize that Los Angeles was not the right city to continue his career in. After a year in California, he moved once again, this time to the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. In between teaching private lessons, gigging, and applying for graduate school at the University of Minnesota, he is working on a solo EP of original music entitled Some Dark, Beautiful Morning.

Greg is endorsed by D'Addario as a Bowed String Artist.
