""Gospel Set To Music""

By COLLEEN POLLOCK
For The Valley Independent

BELLE VERNON – “In the beginning was the Word” is more than words in a new musical soundtrack composed by a parishioner at St. Sebastian Church.
Greg Capozzi is using his music talents to help evangelize and enrich the lives of Christians through a fully orchestrated original soundtrack titled “The Gospel of John”
Capozzi answered a recent call to stewardship by producing the two-pack music CD based on New Testament accounts according to the disciple John. The biblical soundtrack features narrated stories and parables from all 21 chapters as told by the beloved disciple. It is available to area churches so they can reach out to their faithful and in the process earn money to increase their evangelization efforts.
"I am certain this will be a blessing for everyone who listens to it," said Capozzi. "My music ministry's goal for this project is simple. I want to get ‘The Gospel of John’ into as many hands as possible."
Capozzi, an electrical contractor, holds a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in music composition. He said he wanted to give more than time and money to a ministry, so he chose also to use his talents.
“I grew up in a family that owned an electrical business. My brothers, brother-in-law, and uncle were all electricians and I have always had that trade to fall back on. It has enabled me to have a nice recording studio in my basement to record my music and other local musicians,” said Capozzi. “I don’t know why I chose the Gospel of John for this project. I think it chose me?
Capozzi is distributing 1,000 copies of the CD to any ecumenical church that might be interested. He contacted eight area parishes around Easter time to determine interest in the free product.
“They have all welcomed the idea,” said Capozzi. “Some are waiting to run it by their parish councils to see how it can best be worked into the parish needs. Some are trying to tie into a sponsorship project for World Youth Day.”
The packaging for the inspirational CD includes testimonials from area religious and musicians.
“You can read this gospel or you can experience it,” wrote the Rev. Leonard McAlpin, pastor at Holy Spirit Church in Fayette City.
Dr. Terry L. Davis, pastor of Newness of Life Ministries in Monessen, wrote the CD is "Captivating, Compelling, Charismatic! The passion and spirit of this music captures the quintessence of this gospel's message," said Davis.
Dale Conrad, men's ministry director at Harmony-Zelienople United Methodist Church, said the need is great for such a music ministry in a hectic society.
"Men just don't take the time to read the Bible, let alone enjoy doing it," wrote Conrad. "This could be a perfect way for those who travel, to hear God's word when they not able to actually read the Bible; not to take the place of the discipline, but to complement it."
Capozzi said the CD is “a blessing to be able to drive down the road and listen to the Bible, and hopefully in the process you can inspire someone else.”
“I don’t want one nickel from this,” said Capozzi, “I want to give away as many as will be requested and have them be used for whatever purpose will best suit the need.”
Capozzi is part of a new contemporary worship band that showcased their talents April 13 at St. John the Baptist Church in Perryopolis. The contemporary Christian group featuring keyboard, drums, bass and guitars will play again at the 10:30 a.m. mass on May 25 and June 1 at St. John Parish.
Churches interested in obtaining FREE copies of the CD can email Capozzi at gcapozzi@comcast.net or by visiting his web site at www.gregcapozzi.com

Chorale to recall plenty of 'Hometown Memories'

When the Washington Festival Chorale takes the stage at Trinity High School on May 16, everyone will be familiar with the theme of the show.

"When I was looking for a theme for this year's program, we started talking about doing a concert of music with local ties. Everyone thought that would be a neat idea," said Matthew Boice, director of the Washington Festival Chorale.

Many will recognize the chorale's renditions of popular Henry Mancini and Stephen Foster pieces, but "Hometown Memories" also reflects the artistic, gospel and Broadway-esque styles of various local composers.

"I don't think people realize how much of this kind of talent is in this area," Boice said.

The program will feature the music and lyrics of Fred Rogers, Greg Capozzi, Vito DiSalvo, Robert Senay, Peter Ramsey, Albert Cole and Linda Marcus, among others. Although many of the composers travel and no longer live in the area, all were invited to the concert.

"Not all of the composers are local anymore, but all of the music is about the area," Boice said. "We wanted to invite them to be a part of this."

Capozzi is planning to attend the concert, and the choir will perform his arrangement of "We Gather Together," which he arranged as a student at the Eastman School of Music.

"I'm very excited to hear how all these pieces will sound when they're performed together," Capozzi said. "There's nothing like being able to go to the concert and hear it, and then meet the people who made it happen."

Senay and Marcus also are planning to attend.

Featured numbers also include the works of local composer Edith Anderson, who wrote several pieces for a group of high school girls that went on to form The Accidentals. Chorale members Cindy Zudkovich and Sandra Marstellar will join Nancy McCreight and Darla Pepper to perform Anderson's songs.

The Washington Festival Chorale has been together for six years and rehearses in the social hall of First Presbyterian Church in Washington. Since its establishment, it has performed at the Washington Wild Things All-Star game, for various community meetings and organizations and with the Trinity High School orchestra and jazz bands.

Capozzi said the concert is a perfect way to showcase the talent of local singers as well as composers. He's looking forward to attending the concert, where he can appreciate what everyone has done.

"You're there for the music. That's where each soul is going to be touched," Capozzi said. "That element of a show is so important and it gets forgotten, but there's no substitute for taking part in something like this."

Boice said that while the choir is a way for people to enjoy singing, it also allows members and audiences alike to learn a little about all types of music. This will be especially true with the inclusion of the composers in the "Hometown Memories" concert.

"We're hoping to support these local people with lots of other local people," Boice said. - Washington Observer

"Gospel of John Moving"

Hi Greg. This gospel of John CD set is awesome. What it does is make the book of John come alive! I was blessed to see Terry Davis' name on the back. He says you are a humble man of God with a sweet spirit. I've listened to your praise enough to have seen that heart in you. But the real reason I'm writing is to ask if you've ever or if you would ever consider doing something like this for the Book of Jeremiah. What an incredible example of a man going totally against society, suffering for it, and then coming out on top in the end all because he remained obedient to his Creator. What if that Book were put to music--which would put an impact on the concept of obedience? WOW.

Bio

Greg Capozzi – 1991-93/Eastman School of Music, Masters of Composition. 1987-91/Duquense University School of Music, Bachelors of Music Education.
He is published with Hinshaw Music and is author to piano, choral, and symphonic works, with music performed by The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and The Eastman Symphony Orchestra.
In his passion for music, Greg has created Vienna Records and Vito Recording Studios. He has written over 300 original songs. He writes for The Songs of Love Foundation and is a member of BMI & the Film Music Network.
A composer of both modern & eclectic works for Film/TV ranging from classical orchestral to more creative organic textures, Greg's is a "structured improvisational" style with a lean towards the traditional.
His song writing lends itself to a more classic rock feel incorporating his classical training with a vocal flavor comparable to that of Elton John or Billy Joel. His lyrics, reflecting the human condition, emphasize his relationship to a greater power.
As a Producer/Recording Engineer his studio is able to provide most standard “in house” & “on location” services including Recording, Mastering, Duplication, Digital Restoration and Transfer of DAT, cassette, and phonograph media’s. He has recorded his own music as well as Solo Artists and other Band projects.
