Biography

Gregg Cagno makes his home in Philadelphia, PA. His ease of phrasing and clear, warm baritone communicates the joy, wit, love and laughter in his songs without pretense. His guitar playing is bold yet fluid, filled with resonant open tunings. He's toured extensively and has appeared on festival stages from Kerrville to Falcon Ridge to South Florida to Black Potatoe. Gregg's had the opportunity to play at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as well as open for folk/rock stars James Taylor, Richie Havens, America & Poco. His tune Backroad Driver was featured on NPRs Car Talk and he's a two time ASCAPlus award winner. His 5th CD "Worth the Wait" is on Black Potatoe Records. www.greggcagno.com

Mostly appearing solo, Cagno is sometimes accompanied by Karl Dietel on keys or Carol Sharar on violin. The 3 of them occasionally form the CagnoTrio.

His most recent release is "Worth the Wait" recorded with Producer & Multi-Instrumentalist Jim Heffernan (Joe Diffie, Brad Paisley).

In addtion to performing, Gregg has taught songwriting and guitar workshops for the NJ State Teen Arts Festival and Young Composers festival for the past 10 years.

Gregg's song "In Her Own Eyes" (co-written with Robert Meitus) was recently placed in the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings archives with the FAST FOLK catalogue. The title track of his 1st CD "Backroad Driver" was featured on NPR's 'Car Talk'. His tune "Just the 3 of Us" won 'best mellow' at the 2002 South Florida Folk Festival.

Cagno learned his craft, and perfected his smooth baritone voice, as a teenager playing and volunteering at the legendary Godfrey Daniels stage in Bethlehem, PA. The influence of fellow Godfrey's-alum John Gorka can be seen in Gregg's sharp, descriptive, and witty lyrics. But Gregg Cagno isn't an echo of any one performer, musician, or songwriter. He does what few folks can pull off: translate the depths of his influences into a sound and style distinctly his own.

Threads to Braids

Written By: Gregg Cagno

at 3am the other night
an eastern wind kicked up outside
at first it felt like just a storm
now I'm sure that's when you were born

we've dreamt and waited for the day
when you will finally come to stay
and fill our hearts and share our home
and feel our love as we all grow

into a family, into a life
into a place of love and shelter you'll arrive
from single strands, into a braid
a thread of destiny connected us today

what begins as just a thread
will weave a tapestry of friends
and wrap you in support and hope
and guide us with the strength of rope

into a family, into a life
into a place of love and shelter you arrived
from single strands, into a braid
a thread of destiny connected us today

the world it spins just like a spool
connecting me, connecting you
into life's fabric we're all tossed
our threads all woven into cloth

into a family, into a life
into a place of love and laughter you've arrived
from single strands into a braid
a thread of destiny connects us all today

a thread of destiny connects us all today

The No-Dependent Song

Written By: Gregg Cagno

There’s a line around your smile
That traces where it appears
You don’t see it very often ‘cause it’s almost always here
And the little girl inside
Remembers what’s for real
Your two feet meet the earth and your spirit heals

You don’t need me
I don’t need you
‘cause you’ve got everything
and I’ve got everything too
but put our souls
to--ge--ther
and it’s bigger than the parts
Complementary independent hearts

You’re laying down the groove
I’m picking up the sound
You’re putting out the rhythm
And I’m letting in the ground
Your Grande Plié on deck
My hesitation at the door Hearing my resistance dropping to the floor

CHORUS

Hearts of gold can live alone
Don’t need a stronger one to lean on
Body shadows, winter half light
Where the hell’ve you been all my life

The sun will always shine
I’ll always love how you draw stars
The way you talk to animals
the way that you say R’s
And even if we set
we’ll always have this light
the knowledge of the time and feeling when it’s right

CHORUS

Zodiac Blues

Written By: Gregg Cagno

Zodiac Blues....................................Cagno 1/20/2011, ASCAP

I woke up this mornin, and knew something had changed
my room felt rotated, and so did my brain
I thought to blame the tequila, but that just didn’t seem fair
so i checked on Facebook, to see what had been shared

It seems some old Astrologer, had a bit of a wine
& decided that the moon, has left us misaligned
So I’d gone’ to sleep a Capricorn, & woken Sag’ittarius
& I’ve just begun’ to see, what the implication was

where I used to be the epitome, of a hard workin practical man
a good manager who tended to prefer, stickin with the traditional plan

now i’m frequently seeking, answers to the big questions of life
an archer who’s an extrovert & in a changing world I thrive

so I’m re’writing my man’tra, i’ll quit my job and grow my hair
i feel so lucky being told what to be,
who too see, how to feel, what to wear

So everyone gets shifted, one sign back from where you’re born
and the dawning of Aquarius, is now the age of Capricorn
so I guess that means the hippies, are now the practical ones
bet they knew that all along and just kept on having fun

To make things line up right, they added a 13th sign
it’s Ophiuchus, the Serpent Holder, if he don’t stop that he’ll go blind
& now I guess chart readers, are gonna have to give refunds
to make up for the stuff they made up, or just take the money and run

Oh ain’t it fun lettin your life be run
by the stars, the moon & the sun

Clinton Times

Written By: Gregg Cagno

I was born in Clinton in 69
just up this hill and just in time
for those lovely folks of mine
to get a deduction

the younger bro of just two boys
breaking things and making noise
but following the sound of joy
without caution

Armstrong was walkin on the moon
and I was hearing tunes

about the things you do for love
and the 50 ways to leave
wantin to be rhinestone cowboys
rocket men & summer breeze
i had no idea what the words meant
but i sure did like the sound
of AM radio in mom's VW
singing while we drove through town

We grew up sail'ing on the reservoir
and at clinton point theatre
& ice cream was never far at the Daz-o-del
clinton pubic K thru 8
North Hunterdon for high school days
i can't think of a better way or a better place

Michael Jackson sliding cross the moon
and i was hearing tunes

about open arms & walkin this way
& how no one is to blame
867-5309 & being born in the USA
started learning what the words meant
but i mostly liked the sound
hangin out without a worry
singing as we drove thru town

now here we are back in the old place
with your familiar faces

and it's great to see my old friends
with husbands wives babies and
the circle all comes back again
and the songs play on

and it's a Black Potatoe Moon
and we're singin tunes

about Fuzzy Dice and Backroad Drivers
how the world ain't slowin down
kangaroos and how sweet life is
just wingin and prayerin yourself around
now i know what all the words mean
but mostly i just like the sound
jammin out without a worry
singing in our little town

Waking Life

Written By: Gregg Cagno

PICTURE THIS, LATE ONE NIGHT
YOU TRY TO SLEEP, SOMETHING’S NOT RIGHT
YOU FLIP THE SWITCH, THE LIGHT STAYS ON
YOU CHECK THE CLOCK & SOMETHING’S WRONG
CAUSE YOU CAN’T FOCUS ON THE TIME
THERE’S NO REASON ONLY RHYME
YOU TRY & LAY DOWN ON YOUR BED
YOUR BODY FLOATS AWAY INSTEAD....

AND AS YOU’RE FLYING, YOU KEEP REACHING
FOR SOME MEANING, FOR SOME TEACHING
BUT IT’S JUST THE LETTING GO
THAT’S THE PART YOU NEED TO KNOW

SO NOW YOU THINK, YOU MIGHT BE DEAD
YOUR LIFE DON’T LOOK, QUITE LIKE THEY SAID
BUT WHO ARE THEY?, WHAT DO THEY KNOW?
YOU’RE THE ONE, WHO CALLS THE SHOW
BUT FROM UP HERE YOU SEE IT ALL
& IT SEEMS A LONG, LONG WAY TO FALL
AND IN THAT ONE MOMENT OF FEAR
YOU GIVE UP AND IT COMES CLEAR...

YOU AWAKE, OUT OF YOUR HEAD
AND IN THE UNIVERSE INSTEAD
A SPECK OF DUST, A GRAIN OF SAND
BUT HERE AND NOW YOU UNDERSTAND
YOUR TINY WORLD JUST OPENED WIDE
NO NEED TO STAY INSIDE AND HIDE
THE TRUTH & JOY THAT YOU GIVE
ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT LIVE

The Part That Repeats

Written By: Gregg Cagno

START OFF WITH A LINE ABOUT LOVE GONE BAD
MAKE IT SPECIFIC & DON’T SAY ‘THE BEST I EVER HAD’
SHE LEAVES IN THE 1ST VERSE, OH WOE IS ME
THEN TAKE IT TO THE CHORUS AND MILK THE SYMPATHY

THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (OVER & OVER)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (SO YOU REMEMBER)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (AND IT’S USUALLY THE TITLE)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS

NEXT YOU LIST ALL THE THINGS, YOU’VE DONE SINCE SHE SPLIT
STUFF YOU USED TO DO TOGETHER BUT NOW IT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE SHHH
THEN A LINE ABOUT HER PERFUME & MAYBE ONE ABOUT HER CAT
Y’ALL HAVE DIRTY MINDS I DIDN’T MEAN THAT

THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (& MAKES YOU SING WITH ME)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (& MAKES YOU WANNA BUY A CD)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (AND IT’S USUALLY THE TITLE)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS

A TWO CHORD BRIDGE IN THE MINOR
THAT MAKES YOU STRAIN LIKE A WHINER
& SOUND SO SAD AND ALONE
THEN A SOLO ON SAXOPHONE

THE YOU GOTTA WRAP IT ALL UP IN THE THIRD VERSE
WITH A LINE OF PHILOSOPHY LIKE A BLESSING & A CURSE
HOW YOU’RE BOTH BETTER OFF AND HOW YOU WISH HER WELL
TRUTH IS YOU STILL HATE HER BUT THIS SONG NEEDS TO SELL…

THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (& MAKES YOU WANNA DOWNLOAD ME)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (ON YOUR ITOUCH OR YOUR PC)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS (OR JUST STREAM IT SO YOU GET IT FREE)
THIS IS THE PART THAT REPEATS

Worth the Wait

Written By: Gregg Cagno

She’s the last one out
when the show is done
there were others here with flowers
but now I’m the only one
Left leaning on the wall
left staring at the stage door
she may be late
but she’s right on time for sure

C It’s worth the wait in the cold
H when I see her walk my way
O she’s worth her weight in gold
R and I would wait all day
U She’s worth the wait
S

She’s the last one in
now this search is done
there were others here before her
but now she’s the only one
right beside my name
inside my everything
I may be slow but her finger’s in the ring

C It’s worth the wait growing old
H when I see my wife
O she’s worth her weight in gold
R you know I’ve waited all my life
U She’s worth the wait
S

B So while we have this time
R and we’re of sound mind
I let us seize this dance
D let us take this chance
G
E

C It’s worth the wait growing old
H just to see my wife
O she’s worth her weight in gold
R you know I’ve waited all my life
U She’s worth the wait
S
