"Best Bets: Greg Warren makes a good impression"

Greg Warren is funny, even on the phone.

The Los Angeles-based comedian — who plays Cap City Comedy through New Year's Eve — is big on impersonations.

"My characters are (composites) of people I knew growing up . . . I'm probably a little obsessive-compulsive (about observations)," he said, laughing, from St. Louis, his hometown.

Take his Uncle Earl character, who was "pretty popular on KLBJ" the last time he played Austin. "Uncle Earl is a bunch of family traits in one character," he said. There's also Flute Man, who is based on a teammate on Warren's high school wrestling team. "He never let up about me playing clarinet in the school band. But he'd always say flute. In practice, he'd yell things like 'Hit him with your flute, Greg!' . . He's one of my funnier ones."

He also has Uncle Leo, whom he described as the 60-year-old guy at the gym who's always hanging out and never working out and who comments on every attractive woman in his line of vision.

Warren, 37, has been doing comedy for five years full time but started doing standup part time in Houston about 10 years ago. Last year, he had an eight-week stint on BET's "Coming to the Stage," which he said was "maybe the funnest thing I've done in the business. I completely embraced my whiteness on that show, which is ironic because it was on Black Entertainment Television." 8 p.m. Cap City Comedy Club, 8120 Research Blvd. $9 today, $12-$37 Friday-Saturday. www.capcitycomedy.com or 467-2333.

"Local Comedian - Greg Warren"

"He always makes me laugh out loud," Last Comic Standing 4 semifinalist and St. Louis native Nikki Glaser says of Greg Warren. "He's a master and I've learned so much from him. He's one of the best headliners around town, for sure." In 2006 the Comedy Central and BET vet has traveled from CA to PA and everywhere in between, and this fall he hits nineteen theaters across the country alongside national notables on the Friends of the Bob & Tom Show Comedy Tour, slaying 'em with his aw-shucks delivery and razzing of his favorite target group, white trash: "There are a lot of white-trash people in this country trying to learn to fight like the Asian culture. I just wonder if over in Japan there are a lot of kids trying to fight like American white trash. 'Before fight, take off shirt and walk around. Pound chest. Talk trash. Secretly hope someone show up and break up fight before it occur. If you win fight, stand over opponent and say, 'I told you, you not want none of this.' Go home. Don't pay child support. These are the ways of the white-trash warrior."

Greg Warren hails from St. Louis, MO, where his father was a high school wrestling coach and his mother made him play clarinet in the band. He has captivated audiences with anecdotes about the conflict inherent in meshing two high school identities—varsity wrestler and band geek. Greg’s “Flute Man” bit is a perfect description of the insecurities of high school and the ongoing quest to be cool. During his first year of college, Greg attended West Point Academy, where he distinguished himself by amassing an impressive tally of demerits and endless hours of pointless marching. After moving on to the University of Missouri, he studied journalism and was named an All-American college wrestler.

While in college, Greg won a comedy contest and was invited to perform at Déjà Vu in Columbia, MO. After a stint selling Jif and Pringles for corporate giant Procter & Gamble, Greg made the decision to become a full time comedian. This bold move led to an invitation to the prestigious “Just for Laughs Festival” in Montreal in 2002, where Greg performed as one of their “New Faces of Comedy”. He has also been featured on the Comedy Central show, “Premium Blend”.

Greg has most recently been seen on his own half-hour special, “Comedy Central Presents Greg Warren.” He was a finalist on "Last Comic Standing,” BET’s “Coming to the Stage,” and Country Music Television’s “Comedy Stage”. Greg is also a favorite on the nationally syndicated “Bob and Tom” radio show, which led him to tour theaters across the country with the “Friends of Bob and Tom Comedy Tour”.

In addition to his television and festival appearances, Greg continues to tour all across the country, performing his act at clubs such as the Funny Bone and the Improv. Greg’s wrestling background recently resulted in a gig doing color commentary on college wrestling for Fox Sports Midwest.
