Gridley Paige

Who they are: Tim Moyer (vocals), Walt Butler (bass), Matt Giedraitis (guitar/keyboards), Pat Orlowski (drummer) and Jeff Moyer (guitar). This rock band, which performs originals and covers, has been around for almost a decade. Through the years, the band signed then walked out of a deal with Sony Records, and generated a loyal local and regional following.

Highlights of 2008: After returning to the local scene in summer 2007, Gridley Paige was determined to make 2008 a year of “big business,” says lead vocalist Tim Moyer.

The band did that, he says, by choosing to play the “bigger events,” such as Saranac Thursday and the post-parties at Hollyrock on Varick Street, as well as their usual college tour.

The band branched out to other outdoor fests as well. Syracuse’s version of Saranac Thursday, Inner Harbor, welcomed the band as a headliner for the first time in August. That show proved more memorable than Moyer expected. In an energetic moment of stage jumping, a bad landing left him with a torn Achilles tendon. He kept playing and continued the rest of the weekend’s gigs as well. He’s on the road to recovery for 2009.

What’s ahead: “Gridley Paige is not dead,” says Moyer. “Our goal this year is to kind of get things moving even bigger than last year ... We want to be more of an event when we do come into a town.”

That movement toward bigger and better will include putting out an independent record and more entertainment, he said.

“The whole purpose of Gridley Paige now is a rock version of the Scintas – where you’re completely entertained,” says Moyer, referring to a family variety show that performs throughout the region and beyond. - Utica Observer Dispatch

When Gridley Paige hit the scene 20 years ago, drummer Jeff Moyer was 14 – a fresh-faced kid with musical talent that far surpassed that of his adult counterparts.

“He was that good,” said his brother and band leader Tim Moyer. “He was really advanced.”
“What happened to you?” joked guitarist Dave King, who joined the band a year ago. King also tours with Anthrax’s Joey Belladonna.

“He found women and sex, and it was all over after that,” Tim Moyer said, laughing.
While Jeff Moyer may have entered adulthood and grown facial hair, Gridley Paige has done its own growing over the past two decades.

From its advent in the 1990s playing Seattle-type grunge-based originals and covers to a fleeting contract with Sony records in the 2000, the group continues to stay at the forefront of the local music scene, drawing record-breaking crowds with high-energy covers of well-known songs spanning an array of eras and genres.

The band’s most recent re-invention – as a yet-unnamed Journey tribute band – will circulate along the college and casino circuit with a few performances in the local area.

They will continue to perform as Gridley Paige at favorite local clubs and festivals throughout the year, including Friday’s gig at the Silverado Inn, 135 Marginal Road, Herkimer, and Saturday at 12 North, 10125 Mulaney Road, Marcy.

It’s been two decades of branding the name Gridley Paige and it’s paid off, the band says. They’re already close to running out of dates to play this year, they said.

Persistent marketing and old-fashioned talent have been a big part of that success, but the support of fans, club owners, family and friends has been key to their staying power, they said.
And they’ll continue to deliver, Tim Moyer said, as long as they have that support and as long as they draw crowds.

“If people like what they hear, we’re going to play,” he said.
“Even if they don’t, we’re still going to play,” laughed keyboard player Matt Giederaitis.
