"MORBID OUTLOOK MAGAZINE- REVIEW"

Grigori 3 - Exile
Track Listing: Intro, The System, Visions, Awakening, Kindred, Shadows, Defende, Feast (N.S.V.), Silently Breeding, Megotholis, Night Aire, Think Me Wicked (Exile), Awakening (Obsolete Mix).
When first hearing this album, I thought of Delerium with more anger. Then I thought of Snake River Conspiracy, for there’s much more metal guitar than there is electro.
As it continues I get less synthy dance music and more headbanging moshpit action, with the occasional infusion of vampiric organ and other spooky delights. This girl can sing and she can growl, and to me that’s impressive. There’s a momentary break in the arpeggiated beats and metal riffs with the 9th track, “Silently Breeding,” which is all melodic vocals, piano, and string pads - a lovely little lonely moment before punctuating the album with two more songs and two remixes.
The remixes are a bit more electronic overall. If you like your metal paired with trancey beats and female vocals and if you hear this played at your favorite darkwave/synthpop club, you will be inspired to shake your stuff on the dancefloor.

"LEGENDS MAGAZINE EXILE REVIEW"

Grigori 3 have built a small following through their compilation and show appearances. They've been seen on stage with such acts as Genitorturers, Hanzel Und Gretyl, Bile and quite a few others. Exile is the band's debut release and if only other acts would take as much pride and time on their recordings as Grigori 3 I might not be so cranky of a magazine editor.
Grigori 3 are made up of Gwen Bartolini (vocals/programming), Justin Bailey (synth/sampling), Lindz (drums/percussion) and Ray R. Wise (guitars). They mesh surprisingly well together here for a debut release with solid musical breakdowns, stops and well honed mixing without overshadowing one another. They have some other friends join them in the studio on Exile, most notably vocals from Jewel and bass work from Drew Turnbaugh.
The make-up of Exile is electro-goth, with EBM styles mixed with industrial movements and rhythms. Gwen's vocals are a highlight, sultry and controlled with just a touch of diva. Even when Grigori 3 move into the heavier slamming movements, such as Visions, it's controlled and held in check without losing its cool. Awakening is a favorite with a nice guitar-key combination that feeds one another. The choir/synthwork is brilliant and lifts the track to a more climactic strength. The Latin chorus adds an otherworldly flavor.
Kindred is another industro-goth tune with windy synths, guitar riffs and a rhythm borne by bass. Shadows get a bit deeper into itself, Gwen calling through a haze surrounded by guitar riffs and electro-body programming. By halfway or so through Exile you do find a downside, as the tracks are all somewhat similar in make-up. There quite well done, but don't deviate much amongst each other making Exile a bit unmoving.
Feast (N.S.V.) is one of the faster paced and therefore a bit more enjoyable for me. Silently Breeding is a pretty piano dirge. Megotholis does a good job of mixing up a bit, by tightening the style and speeding up the tempo. A highlight to the Exile album.
Similar sounding tracks aside, Grigori 3 do a good job of the goth-industrial thing. All facets of the music are executed very well and Gwen does a great job of leading the group with voice and face. I'd like to see a bit more change-ups between tracks on future albums, with Ray taking on more movement in his guitar style and maybe the addition of a full time bassist.

Grigori 3‹Exile (Dark Star Records)
Exile is easily one of the best goth-rock albums to have been released in the past decade. The debut cd from the Chicago-based quartet known as Grigori 3 is a sumptuous musical feast. The band¹s sound can best be described as a mixture of Evanescence, Rammstein, and Nox Arcana. Gothic enchantress Gwen Bartolini weaves her siren¹s spell with captivating vocals, while Ray R. Wise lays down one crunching guitar riff after another. Justin Bailey¹s synth work adds eerie blend of symphonic and electronic melodies, and drummer Lindz delivers a thunderous beat. Among the numerous standout tracks, the electrifying industrial rhythms of ³The System² and ³Awakening² are sure to fill dancefloors and get heads banging. ³Feast² delivers an eerie melody with tolling bells and raw darkwave rock, while the somber ballad ³Silently Breeding² is beautifully haunting. The aggressive tones of ³Night Aire² is accented by a sinister pipe organ melody, while ³Think Me Wicked² delivers a hard-hitting, double-fisted assault of rock and electronica. Simply put, this is a brilliant debut album. Highly recommended.

Female Fronted GRIGORI 3's New Album "Exile" Poised to Hit the Mainstream

GRIGORI 3 debut album "Exile" embraced by both industries.
(PRWEB) September 30, 2006 -- Hardhitting female fronted metal band GRIGORI 3 released their debut album "Exile" last month nationwide through Dark Star records and Synergy distribution. Synergy embraced the the album by including it on their August 2006 catalog cover and Dark Star is now selling albums as far as Japan.

GRIGORI 3 is yet another talented indy band that was jump started from Myspace.com (20,000+ song plays and 1,000+ friends) Which helped give the band an edge with their online presence over the past year.

GRIGORI 3's "Exile" has been warmly received by the online community including itunes and Garageband.com ( who awarded the album various best of achievements throughout the month.)On lookers credit it's ability to the albums ability to appeal to various genres rock, goth, industrial, metal, pop, darkwave, ambient, epic. The band showcases their "pop" club aspects in Awakening, and Defende,Feast and Think Me Wicked. However the album has solid metal tracks such as The System, Megotholis and Shadows.GRIGORI 3 contines to cater to another genre "easy listening." ( without losing their distinctive sound) in Silently Breeding, which is a piano vocal track that showcases the bands softer side and is surprising audiences everywhere.

Althought the album has pop elements the album has continued to be embraced by the "underground" music industry as well, with upcoming reviews /features/ads in such national publications as: Gothic Beauty,Lollipop,Subculture,Virus,MK, Echo Immortalis and Dark Realms Magazines.

The band is excited at the prospects that have opened up to them including teaming up with NY Times Best Selling childrens author Michael Stadther for the upcoming video "Think Me Wicked"/ Resurrection M. Pictures(due out in dec 2006)They are also preparing release of their third video" Silently Breeding"in 2007.

WINTER -2006

GRIGORI 3
Exile
Label: Dark Star Records
A strange fusion of gothic and industrial rock, Grigori 3's debut walks a peculiar line between the two associated genres. Bristling with heavy power chords and charged drumming, these turgid qualities are balanced by Gwen Bartolini's velvet-soft voice, creating a duality of charged instrumentation and sensual vocals that is rather unique.

In my opinion, the pinnacle piece is also the sole example that sonically disassociates itself from the aggressive side of their personality.
Furnished with only Bartolini's voice, synths, piano, and delicate drums, "Silently Breeding" is an intimate and stunning ballad. Paired with the porcelain resonance of pensive piano, Gwen's gentle soprano lilt is reminiscent of Tori Amos, while a mist of sweeping synth and brittle shimmering snare echoes the electronic ennui of the Cure. However, this brilliant diversion doesn't subtract from their charged electro-metal-goth visage.
"The System" begins this quartet's assault, matching rugged riffs to hissing snare for a grumbling, muddy dirge. Stabbing and sharp in its cadence, Bartolini's sneer flexes from a grave tremble to a wavering falsetto, juxtaposing its aggressive instrumentation with a lofty gypsy fluidity.
Rollicking to a conjoined attack of stuttering guitar and wild drumming, "Night Aire" further hones a balance between their boisterous metal and their ethereal gothic personalities. Though turbulent and audacious, the guitars relinquish in their attack, allowing a wonderfully macabre electric organ solo to take center stage. Swooping in to race falsetto circles around choppy guitar riffs, it carries an air one might expect from The Phantom of the Opera, its ghoulish presence finally silenced by a metal locomotive.
Though Bartolini's moody, swirling vocals and Grigori 3's rigid riffs dominate most "Exile", there are still moments where the electronics make their presence known. Though exploding into a jagged start-stop guitar dirge that ebbs from a drum-heeled charge to a swaying, grubby croon, "Think Me Wicked (Exile)" synths rise from a backing symphonic whistle to dominate its core. Gradually, the metal facade dissipates to reveal a chugging drum machine and fuzzy slip-sliding arpeggio machine, its din dominating the foreground over Bartolini's distant siren wail.
A whole, this is quite a nice debut; all the tracks are quite engaging, but as a whole it feels like an album missing that one barbed single. Industrial rock's inherent measured stomping nature is at home with their heavy guitar and yet it surprisingly doesn't alienate Bartolini's rich vocals.

Though I may pine for more electro accouterments, Grigori 3 show quite a bit of promise; their vocals and precise hooks are grabbing, and properly honed, they could rise to become a presence within the American scene.

Gothic darkness seduces in Grigori 3 and Midnight Syndicate releases

November 2, 2006
Last week, I changed things up a bit and gave you reviews of horror movie DVDs instead of CDs. This week, I offer a couple of

Grigori 3
"Exile"
(Dark Star)

One of the best goth-rock combos I've heard in years hails from right here in Chicago. Grigori 3 actually is a quartet (the name has to do with fallen angels), and led by a talented and alluring goth beauty named Gwen. The band has been playing around town for three years now, and after performing last year at the large day-long GothicFest here and getting coverage in Spin Magazine, its first full-length CD finally is available.

For those who love crunchy fuzz-riff guitars and haunting vocals, this is a must-have album. Think Evanescence, with a more hard rock guitarist, and you'll have an idea of the power and style of this band. Gwen's vocals have more depth and color than Amy Lee's, however, while her band's attack borrows from a number of goth scene touchpoints.

While the guitars and drums pound strong throughout the dozen songs on "Exile," the metallic attack is tempered by washes of keyboards that sometimes sound like the backdrop music for a haunted house.

Gwen's layers of plaintive harmonies add even more to the often melancholic atmosphere of the songs. She even manages to sing in Latin, to add to the medieval gothic atmosphere on songs like "Awakening," which is offered in two forms on the album.

"Awakening" previously appeared on a demo EP the band released, and thankfully it's resurrected here.

"Kindred," is one of the band's best tracks, and shows off its love of dark themes. Over the top of a dramatic, spooky, music bed (with the toll of a bell) Gwen sings: "though you crave my flesh and bone/it's not the blood you need alone/to feed the emptiness inside."

In "Shadows," Gwen sounds like she's calling to us from another room, as the band lays down a stomping riff with a furious barrage of drums. And then, in "Feast," there's another urgent rhythm bed as the vocals and keyboards set a palpable tension.

Grigori 3 offers an intoxicating mix of spooky atmosphere with hard-edged rock rhythms. Don't miss this disc, or one of their local shows. For more information, look at their Web site at www.gregori3.com.
