"Grim rises from the ashes of a personal crisis"

After enduring a rough personal journey through recovery and from the ashes of local alt rock band Hello Lady, Lea Arngrimson has formed a new musical tour de force, Grim.

“I had a personal crisis, so Hello Lady dissolved, and I thought I want to start this solo project Grim. So I invited Jeff Lunde (also formerly from Hello Lady) to come along,” Arngrimson said in a recent telephone interview.

Grim is comprised of Lea Arngrimson (vocals/guitar), Jeff Lunde (percussion), Shelynn Taneal (vocals), and Brandon Nicholson (bass).

“We met Shelynn Taneal at a promotional video shoot, and we invited her to sing with us,” said Arngrimson. “Brandon Nicholson was also a former member of Hello Lady. That was about a year ago.”

Taking the band name from her own surname, Grim is a very personal music project for Arngrimson.

“The songs come from a very personal place for me. I wrote them while dealing with some harsh personal circumstances. I brought the songs to the project and they all kind of evolved as other members put their inputs into it.”

A music teacher by trade, Lunde helps craft the tempo and structure of the songs.

“He is definitely a big influence,” said Arngrimson

Described as alt-hard rock indie music, “Our sound is hard to describe, we have some heavy lyrics, but then we’re uplifting.

“Pinocchio is definitely a favourite (song) of mine. It leans more towards a singer/songwriter feel, starting with just me and my guitar ending with the others joining me. It follows me through my recovery.”

The band has been performing songs live in front of a variety of audiences and with a variety of musical acts since September of 2016.

“We are working on our timing for the live performances but all of our feedback from the audiences has been positive,” said Arngrimson. “We have a fan who hasn’t missed a show since we started. I always see her in the crowd dancing as we play.

“This music touches base on things people can relate to. I didn’t write it to help, I wrote it as an outlet. But if someone is getting something out of my journey that’s spectacular.”

Monsters, their six-song debut EP, will be released at a live performance and CD release party at the Artful Dodger in Regina on June 2. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

"One sentence review of Monsters"

Grims “Monsters” lies in the gravelly alley where the blues and grunge meet. - Jeremy Pilon host of 91.3 CJTR The Cockpit

"Calling all captains show details"

"Grim has been quickly taking over the Regina Alternative music scene with passion and energy that comes through and shines in their live show. The fusion of vocals between the two sirens known as Lėa and Charles grabs your attention as it compliments the catchy blues inspired riffs that makes you move your feet." - Colton Geschwandtner
