"GrisGris to Bring Unique Style to Chelsea's"

By Kristina Stafford

United by their affinity for creating funk-o-licious, face-melting original music, four friends - all hailing from Baton Rouge - decided to come together to further hone their musical skills and collaborate in the song writing process. This is Gris Gris, in a nutshell.

Gris Gris consists of Michael Evans on guitar and vocals, Chris Dibenedetto on keys, vocals and harmonica, Luke Coenen on drums, and Brandon Harper on bass and vocals. Tiger Weekly got a chance to catch up with the band to find out more about what influences their style, and what a live show entails.

"We all come from diverse musical backgrounds." Dibenedetto commented. "When we combine all of our styles it comes out as something that's our own. We play the kind of music we enjoy playing and listening to, and we put our own spin on it."

"We take much pride in our home state of Louisiana, which includes the music, food, people, and overall culture. We wanted our roots to show, but at the same time we wanted people to know that we're gonna play something you've never heard before, and play it with a swag you've never experienced." Dibenedetto continued.

The musicians of Gris Gris have only been playing together since 2009, but the musical chemistry between them flows on stage, and off set. What's most appealing about this local band, though? Well, according to Brandon Harper, it's all about the swagger.

"Swagger. When I get to the bar to set up all I want is to have a badass time and party. A Gris Gris show entails loud music and beautiful women. Each show really is different from the last regardless of if we intend it to be, and that's what keeps the ride exciting for me."

Whatever they want to call it, they definitely have that "it" factor that sets them head and shoulders apart from other local bands. Creativity may be hard to find in the music world nowadays, but Gris Gris smashes that notion into the ground with mind-blowing live performances. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Gris Gris will be playing alongside Easy Company from New Orleans at Chelsea's Cafe on Friday, August 27th. Check out the band's website at - The TigerWeekly

Still working on that hot first release.

GrisGris hails from Baton Rouge, Louisiana where they came together in the Fall of 2009. United by their interest in making funk-o-licious, face-melting original music the friends decided to further hone their musical skills and collaborate in the song writing process. What resulted was an electric, soulful sound coated in feel good times and south louisiana grime. The group developed a melting pot of styles having roots in jazz, blues, funk, rock, hiphop, and electronic genres of music, which has come to be termed Funk-Electro-Soul. The band's spontaneous nature adds even more to the fresh feel all the members radiate throughout every show, as does the group's use of improvisation. Whether it be early mornin' or late at night, the members of GrisGris are always down to have fun and play their tunes, as the group strives to spread the music they love to all who'll give a listen. Keep it crunchy, keep 'em movin. Funk-Electro-Soul
