Bio

From the stage, six musicians lead us into the realm of a mystical and festive trance on the wings of their surging and powerful percussive rhythms and chants typical of north-eastern Brazil.Their strong musicality revives the ancient festive traditions and rituals that celebrate the « Coco do Xamba » as well as the ‘Maracatu’, the ‘Cirandas’ and the ‘Candomblé.’
According to the prophecy of Ifa, a mission was bestowed upon this noble-blooded Negress to train her warriors to fight for and preserve their culture over several generations. The augur states that throughout their history the Xambas would suffer from oppression and persecution, but that their culture would always remain vital and free.
And thus the Xamba village of Quilombo in Olinda, at Recife (in north-eastern Brazil) was founded. The musicians from the Bongar band grew up in this Xamba terroir.

The Xamba people were originally from the Yoruba ethnic group who live on the border between Cameroon and Nigeria.
In Brasil, during the 1920’s they were forbidden from practising their Candomblé religious rituals and were often persecuted. As a result, the Xamba families fled the State of Alagoas to take refuge in the far more tolerant State of Pernambuco. There they founded the village of Quilombo on the outskirts of Olinda.
