Bio

Grupo Meridional is the re-incarnation of an imaginary club band playing in and around Bogota, Columbia in the late 1950's. To entertain a hip and varied urban audience, this band would have been familiar with Caribbean Calypso, Cuban Son and Rumba, Brazilian Samba and Choro, and from up north, Blues and Jazz. Grupo Meridional, however is not your garden variety sterile Gringo homage to these forms, or a trip down memory lane. Instead, GM offers a modern and unique reworking of these styles;
Grupo, as a band, has worked to achieves a highly recognizable sound. This is accomplished, in part, through the incindiary interplay between guitarist and principle composer Alan Simcoe and flutist George Schneider. Significantly, Grupo does not employ a kit drummer, but rather relies on the the percussion wizardry of Ian Turner and Rick Wood on timbales and congas respectively. Singer Alaina T'oadpipe, self described "trailer park diva" provides alternately earthy and jazzy interpretations of Simcoe's songs.
